Elizabeth Barlow Artist on Instagram: "This is the first layer of oil paint for a pale violet iris, which is part of a large painting on my easel. If you look closely, you can see the white chalk marks where I sketched in the flower on top of the stained color on the canvas. At this point, I am not really thinking about color or value. I am mostly thinking about form. I am only trying to capture the undulating curves, crevices and veins of the iris. Once I have all the flowers in the painting blocked in this way, I will go back over that first layer and add glazed layers of oil paint. With the glazed layers, I will be able to indulge myself in playing with color and value, and that’s when the painting will really begin to pop!
