117K views · 10K reactions | this is the beginning of my recreation of what i think/imagine a free black woman in 18th century cape town might worn, c. 1760s (but, like, loosely). i love rococo splendour & georgian excess but working and middle class clothing is just so much more practical while still being really pretty. i self-drafted these jumps (basically a quilted corset), using my 1760s stays as guidance for the shape and they’re constructed from a layer of shweshwe, an old cotton table cloth, with polyester batting and sheeting cotton sandwich in between. the binding is also a plain cotton. there will be a petticoat, apron and maybe a fichu and bonnet situation depending on how my vacation time goes. #historicalfashion #18thcenturyfashion #dutchcapecolony #historicalcostuming #176 Quilt Corset, 18th Century Jumps, Quilted Corset, Cape Colony, Mood Happy, Class Outfit, 18th Century Fashion, Middle Class, Current Mood
