The Church of the Madonna della Salute is one of the most beautiful works of Venetian and Italian Baroque that overlook the Grand Canal. It was built in 1631 by Baldassarre Longhena and consecrated in 1687. The church bears witness to the devotion and gratitude of the Venetians to the Virgin Mary for having freed the city from the plague of 1630. The plan is octagonal and is covered by a central dome surmounted by the statue of the Immaculate Virgin.
