The Mangking Sandstone of Tembeling Group in the Kuala Tahan region records part of the infill of... more The Mangking Sandstone of Tembeling Group in the Kuala Tahan region records part of the infill of the continental extensional basin formed at the end of the Triassic. Described facies of this formation include sandy matrix conglomerate (that shows evidence of pseudoplastic debris flow and traction-dominated deposition), sandstones with trough, tabular and horizontal stratification, laminated and massive mudstone. Groups of associated facies are arranged into six distinct architectural elements (channel, sandy bedform, crevasse splay, laminated sand sheet, downstream and lateral accretion and floodplain fines), which are constant with a fluvial origin for the succession. The types of architectural elements present and their relationship to each other demonstrate that the Mangking Sandstone preserves a record of a meandering river system.

This Upper Miocene part of the Segama Group unconformably overlies the Garinono Formation and is conformably overlain by the Bongaya Formation. This formation was investigated with detailed logging of outcrops and microfossils analysis in order to map the depositional facies and sedimentary environment. ABSTRACT The early cretaceous sedimentary sequence of Gagau Group exposed along the upstream of Sungai Chichir comprises of massive pebbly sandstone, massive mudstone and thickly bedded sandstone with various sedimentary structures and fossils. This sequence can be divided into seven sedimentary facies with different mechanism of sedimentation. Based on association between various sedimentary facies it can be interpreted that this sequence was deposited in various aluvial plain environment including main river channel, meandering rivers, braided river and flood plain. Fossils discovered give an early cretaceous age to the sequence. Evidence of top-soil give a good prospect of finding better and more complete terrestrial fossils, especially vertebrate fauna and dinosaurs.

Being located close to the border of Thailand (Figure 1), Langkawi comprises of several rock successions that could correlated directly to the stratigraphy of the northwestern Peninsular Malaysia and southern Thailand.

This Upper Miocene part of the Segama Group unconformably overlies the Garinono Formation and is conformably overlain by the Bongaya Formation. Based on the presence of Rhizophora, Brownlowia, Florchuetia sp., Polypodium, Stenochleana Palustris, Ascidian Spicule, low angle cross bedding, very fine grained sandstone, thin alternations of very fine sandstone, silt and clay layers showing cyclicity (muddy rhythemites), rocks in the Sandakan Formation are interpreted as mangal estuary and open marine facies. Three facies associations could be deduced from the seven lithofacies; 1) Gradual coarsening upwards shoreface, 2) abrupt change facies, and 3) prograding estuary facies association.
About 80% of the Kinta Valley and 40% of the Kuala Lumpur area, both of which are densely populat... more About 80% of the Kinta Valley and 40% of the Kuala Lumpur area, both of which are densely populated, are underlain by limestone bedrock. Dissolution of the limestone bedrock by the slightly acidic rainwater which seeps into the bedrock along discontinuities gives rise to a subsurface karstic morphology with features like steep pinnacles and deep troughs, overhangs, boulder floaters, an intricate network of cavities beneath the bedrock surface, and sinkholes. At the interface between the bedrock and the overlying soil, there is a pocket of very soft, compressible soil with zero SPT value. All these features and characteristics pose a big challenge to engineers in the design of foundation of buildings.
