Its twenty-one chapters provide diverse perspectives on Shakespeare and early modern literature that engage innovation, collaboration, and forward-looking practices. They model ways of mobilizing justice with early modern texts and claim the intellectual benefits of integrating social justice into courses. The book reconceives the relationship between students and Renaissance literature in ways that enable them – and us – to move from classroom discussions to real-life applications.

And yet, when she writes to Sir Robert Southwell in 1694, 1 she is surprisingly humble about her achievements, calling hers an 'innocent diversion of gardening'. 2 The duchess's attention to plant collecting and botanical knowledge, though, was hardly just an 'innocent diversion', as characterized by J. E. Dandy, editor of the massive Sloane Herbarium, when he concludes, 'Considering the importance of the gardens at Badminton and the position which they evidently hold in the history of English gardening, it is remarkable that published references to them [or to the Duchess herself], other than those by contemporaries, should be so few and so slight' (209). 3 That Mary Somerset was an important figure in gardening history seems abundantly clear. This essay, however, demonstrates how Somerset's work with plants blurs the line between 'gardening' and the twin fields of horticulture and botany; hers was an endeavour that crossed over into what we might see as more than just plant collecting and is indicative of scientific thinking about plants as well. It is clear from the many papers preserved by Sir Hans Sloane, long-time President of the Royal Society and Somerset's regular correspondent, from the respect her contemporaries had for her growing skills at Badminton estate, 4 and from the many men and women who relied on her for the plants they grew in their own gardens, that Somerset's work with plants was impressive and influential. The duchess was an ambitious collector, as demonstrated by the variety and sheer number of plants she grew, and by the extensive space 1 Sir Robert Southwell was elected President of the Royal Society in 1692. 2 Badminton Estate (hereafter BE) MS FmF 1/5/9. 3 J. E. Dandy (ed.), The Sloane Herbarium (London: The British Museum, 1958), 209. Subtitled, 'An Annotated List of the Horti Sicci; With Biographical Accounts of the Principal Contributors', the Sloane Herbarium represents a significant corpus of writings about plants from the period in Sloane's possession and the men and (some) women whose work he valued. 4 I would like to extend a note of gratitude to the current Duke of Beaufort for allowing me to work on Mary Somerset's manuscript letters and catalogues in the Muniments Room of the Badminton Estate. I wish also to thank Elaine Milsom, his gracious assistant, for helping me navigate these materials and for delicious hot chocolate on a cold, rainy afternoon among the musty family papers.
