Changed lifestyles during the COVID-19 pandemic: the need for health education in the curriculum of pedagogical students

The health education in schools became the focus of public attention during the global pandemic o... more The health education in schools became the focus of public attention during the global pandemic of COVID-19. Teaching practice changed to meet the increased demand for pupils' health, triggering a reevaluation of higher education curricula for pedagogical students. Therefore, this mixed methods study aimed to investigate the lifestyle of university students of pedagogy in Slovenia during the COVID-19 pandemic. One hundred and four students (87.4% females and 12.6% males) met the criteria and participated in an online survey in which they self-assessed their physical activity, eating habits, mental well-being, and sleep quality. The convergent parallel mixed methods design was used to obtain qualitative descriptions of student experiences with lifestyle domains and quantitative data on their attitudes towards the impact of lifestyle on physical and mental well-being during the pandemic. The results suggest that the pandemic did significantly impact student lifestyles, especially their mental well-being. Although most students maintained a healthy lifestyle during the pandemic, they also reported a deterioration in other measured domains of health-related behaviour. Particular attention should, therefore, be paid to the curriculum of pedagogical students to develop their competences in health education and readiness to assume an active role as educators for their future pupils' health.

In this article, we will discuss the case of fair and inclusive schools that are considerate of t... more In this article, we will discuss the case of fair and inclusive schools that are considerate of the specific and unique needs of their pupils and offer quality education for all. We will highlight the most important indicators of inclusive education and focus on research that confirms the importance of the teachers' willingness to establish good interpersonal relationships with their pupils. In the empirical section, we will introduce the results of our qualitative study. Based on interviews conducted with 20 mothers and 20 primary school pupils in two Slovene Roma settlements, we explored how pupils and their mothers perceive teachers' attitudes towards Roma children. Our findings were very promising, for they showed that the interviewed pupils and their mothers had a positive experience with the teachers and their pedagogical work with Roma children. However, we should not ignore the few cases that pointed to ethnic discrimination towards Roma pupils.

Gibalna aktivnost učenk in učencev osnovnih šol v Prekmurju: pogled v preteklost in priložnosti za prihodnost

Šola ima pomembno vlogo pri zagotavljanju telesnega in duševnega zdravja otrok. Svetovna zdravstv... more Šola ima pomembno vlogo pri zagotavljanju telesnega in duševnega zdravja otrok. Svetovna zdravstvena organizacija otrokom in mladostnikom priporoča vsak dan vsaj eno uro gibalnega udejstvovanja. Epidemija covida-19 in ukrepi samoizolacije ter šolanja na daljavo so v veliki meri vplivali na to, koliko se otroci gibljejo. V empirični anketni raziskavi smo želeli ugotoviti, kakšno je bilo stanje gibalne aktivnosti učenk in učencev v drugem vzgojno-izobraževalnem obdobju osnovne šole v obdobju epidemije covida-19 na območju prekmurske regije ter kakšna izhodišča nudijo dobljene ugotovitve za prihodnja načrtovanja na tem področju. Raziskava je zajela 198 učencev. Največ učencev se je z gibalno aktivnostjo ukvarjalo pet-do sedemkrat na teden, kar so izvajali v največji meri z družino in pa sami doma. Prevladovale so gibalne aktivnosti zmerne intenzivnosti. Kljub ugotovitvi, da je bila večina osnovnošolcev v Prekmurju med epidemijo redno gibalno aktivnih, pa je viden upad organiziranih aktivnosti pod strokovnim vodstvom. V šolah je treba okrepiti interesne dejavnosti ter učence spodbujati k vključevanju vanje. Sport and physical activities offer a sensitive environment where the values of humanity, human r... more Sport and physical activities offer a sensitive environment where the values of humanity, human rights, empathy and fair play come to the fore. However, at the same time the competition nature of sport and the interest of winning at any cost represent a risks of harm, especially for young preadolescent athletes. Therefore, the need arises to identify the main ethical conceptual and normative issues of the top youth sport. Our critical review of possible risk factors and empirical findings of semi-structured in-depth interviews with four top-level gymnastics' coaches showed that achievements of children in sport are the result of multiple factors driven by the main force of the ethics of maximum behind. Gymnasts' intrinsic motivation, pleasure to sport, persistent hard work, start at early age, and the role of parents are essential for success. However, the morality of the coach as a reflection of society values should be carefully considered in the future.

Skupna uporaba kvantitativnega in kvalitativnega metodološkega pristopa v isti raziskavi se je pr... more Skupna uporaba kvantitativnega in kvalitativnega metodološkega pristopa v isti raziskavi se je pričela intenzivno razvijati ob koncu 80. let 20. stoletja ter postala pomemben del družboslovnih znanosti v 21. stoletju. Pa vendar je zelo malo temeljnih metodoloških empiričnih dokazov o uspešnosti tovrstnega metodološkega pristopa in njegovih osrednjih dilemah v raziskovalni praksi. Namen naše raziskave je bil dobiti vpogled v mnenja mednarodno priznanih ekspertov o kakovosti v raziskavah z integracijo metod v družboslovnem raziskovanju. Ugotovitve kvalitativne vsebinske analize devetih intervjujev so izpostavile večjo kompleksnost raziskav z integracijo metod v primerjavi z drugimi metodološkimi pristopi, kar je povezano z določenimi problematikami zagotavljanja njihove kakovosti, kot so premajhna integracija, nezadostna kakovost, neusklajenost rezultatov z metodologijo ter različni kriteriji ocenjevanja kakovosti. Eksperti so izpostavili pomen raziskovalčevega znanja. Metodološko izobraževanje, razvoj novih izobraževalnih programov ter njihova evalvacija predstavljajo pomembna izhodišča za kakovostno raziskovanje z integracijo metod.

This research was carried out within the project ‘Education of Teachers as a Factor of Providing High-quality Life-long Learning in the Learning Society/The Society of Fast Socio-economic Changes and Unsure Future’, funded by the Slovenian Research Agency. This paper provides a basic overview of the characteristics of open instruction, an umbrella term that combines active and learner-centred didactic strategies. The empirical section focuses on the use of didactic strategies. The survey was carried out with 1,536 primary school[1] pupils in Grades 7 and 9 and 263 of their teachers. Effectiveness of Health Promotion Interventions in Primary Schools—A Mixed Methods Literature Review

School-based health promotion interventions (HPIs) are commonly used in schools, but scientific e... more School-based health promotion interventions (HPIs) are commonly used in schools, but scientific evidence about the structures of effective interventions is lacking. Therefore, we conducted a mixed methods systematic literature review to recognize the HPI structures related to their effectiveness. Based on the inclusion criteria, 49 articles were selected for the literature review. The articles, published in 2011–2022, described 46 different school-based interventions conducted in 20 different countries. The average duration of the interventions was 12 months, and they were implemented mostly with an RCT study design (61.2%) and by targeting children (69.4%). Three main groups of interventions were identified and explained: (1) extensive and long-term interventions; (2) school policy-changing interventions; and (3) highly effective interventions. The Role of Physical/Sporting Activities in Coping with Behaviour Problems among Primary School Students

Physical/sporting activities provide a child with opportunities to interact with others, validate... more Physical/sporting activities provide a child with opportunities to interact with others, validate and express him/herself, while also being critical factors in socialisation and the prevention of deviant behaviour. Therefore, in this study, we were interested in which physical/sporting activities are most strongly associated with the management of behaviour problems. Results from a representative sample of 1782 Slovenian primary school students show that a lack of physical/sporting activity is the strongest predictor of internalising behaviour problems. In this context, key roles are played by the frequency and intensity of activity, extracurricular sports activities, practising dance and limiting sedentary transportation to school.

Their competences cover a wide range of knowledge, abilities, and skills. However, the curricula for teacher education rarely contain topics related to children’s health and lifestyle. The purpose of this study was to gain an insight into the role of primary school teachers in supporting a healthy lifestyle and the well-being of children. A systematic literature review with meta-analysis was implemented on a sample of N = 37 studies. The results showed that teachers have a significant role in strengthening physical and mental health in schoolchildren aged between 6 to 12. The impact of multicomponent programmes on balance and fall reduction in adults with intellectual disabilities: a randomised trial

Background One challenge a modern society faces is this: providing those vulnerable and ageing gr... more Background One challenge a modern society faces is this: providing those vulnerable and ageing groups of adults who have intellectual disabilities with appropriate support for improving static and dynamic balance. Balance is a crucial component of physical fitness and, consequently, of fall reduction and prevention. The aim of the present randomised controlled trial was to evaluate the efficacy, after 16 weeks, that three different Special Olympics physical activity programmes had on balance and on fall reduction in adults with intellectual disabilities. Method A convenience sample of 150 persons with mild and moderate intellectual disabilities was recruited from the accessible Special Olympics Slovenia population of physically inactive adults with intellectual disabilities. The sample was randomised to the experimental group 1 (multicomponent balance-specific exercise programme group with additional workshops on such social gerontology topics as active and healthy ageing; N = 50), the experimental group 2 (multicomponent wellness programme group; N = 50) and a control group (regular Special Olympics athletic training; N = 50). Results Significant differences were found between groups in the balance scores throughout the study period and in the ability to decrease fall frequency. Conclusions Balance assessment is a high predictor of frequency of falls, and among adults with intellectual disabilities, it significantly correlates with exercise. The results indicate that a multicomponent balance-specific exercise programme with a significant sociogerontological component on active ageing could be a useful intervention for intellectually disabled adults who have poor balance and who experience frequent falls.

The research was carried out during the 2001/02 school year on a sample of 194 respondents, who were third grade elementary school students. Gender differences were determined by means of contingency tables and the chi-squared test. Statistically significant results for gender differences emerge from the research in the type of sports discipline the respondents participate in. No statistically significant gender distinctions were found in the quantity of the out-ofschool physical activities.

Več različnih gibalnih spodbud bo deležen, več različnih športnih zvrsti in gibalnih dejavnosti bo spoznal, večja bo njegova baza gibalnih znanj, iz katere bo črpal v odraslosti, ko bo gibanje predstavljajo ob ustrezni prehrani osrednji dejavnik ohranjanja njegovega zdravja. Knjiga pa bo pomembno gradivo tudi vsem ženskam pri prepoznavanju vzorcev spolne diskriminacije in lastnem omejevanju, kar je prvi korak, ki vodi k ukrepanju ter zavzemanju za enake možnosti. Znanstvena monografija Ženske in šport opozarja na vrednost posameznikove svobode na področju športnega udejstvovanja in bo nepogrešljiva referenca za nadaljnje raziskave na tem področju. Zato lahko le upamo, da nas bo avtorica kmalu razveselila z njenim nadaljevanjem.

Physical/sporting activities provide a child with opportunities to interact with others, validate... more Physical/sporting activities provide a child with opportunities to interact with others, validate and express him/herself, while also being critical factors in socialisation and the prevention of deviant behaviour. Therefore, in this study, we were interested in which physical/sporting activities are most strongly associated with the management of behaviour problems. Results from a representative sample of 1782 Slovenian primary school students show that a lack of physical/sporting activity is the strongest predictor of internalising behaviour problems. In this context, key roles are played by the frequency and intensity of activity, extracurricular sports activities, practising dance and limiting sedentary transportation to school.

Their competences cover a wide range of knowledge, abilities, and skills. However, the curricula for teacher education rarely contain topics related to children’s health and lifestyle. The purpose of this study was to gain an insight into the role of primary school teachers in supporting a healthy lifestyle and the well-being of children. A systematic literature review with meta-analysis was implemented on a sample of N = 37 studies. The results showed that teachers have a significant role in strengthening physical and mental health in schoolchildren aged between 6 to 12. The purpose of our research was to compare the presence of elements of gender differentiation in the syllabus with the results of a research on the motor/sports activity of male and female pupils attending the primary school. The research was carried out in December 2001 upon the sample of 194 respondents (Pišot et al. 2004a). The impact of multicomponent programmes on balance and fall reduction in adults with intellectual disabilities: a randomised trial

Balance is a crucial component of physical fitness and, consequently, of fall reduction and prevention. The aim of the present randomised controlled trial was to evaluate the efficacy, after 16 weeks, that three different Special Olympics physical activity programmes had on balance and on fall reduction in adults with intellectual disabilities. Method A convenience sample of 150 persons with mild and moderate intellectual disabilities was recruited from the accessible Special Olympics Slovenia population of physically inactive adults with intellectual disabilities. The sample was randomised to the experimental group 1 (multicomponent balance-specific exercise programme group with additional workshops on such social gerontology topics as active and healthy ageing; N = 50), the experimental group 2 (multicomponent wellness programme group; N = 50) and a control group (regular Special Olympics athletic training; N = 50). Results Significant differences were found between groups in the balance scores throughout the study period and in the ability to decrease fall frequency. Conclusions Balance assessment is a high predictor of frequency of falls, and among adults with intellectual disabilities, it significantly correlates with exercise. The results indicate that a multicomponent balance-specific exercise programme with a significant sociogerontological component on active ageing could be a useful intervention for intellectually disabled adults who have poor balance and who experience frequent falls.

The research was carried out during the 2001/02 school year on a sample of 194 respondents, who were third grade elementary school students. Gender differences were determined by means of contingency tables and the chi-squared test. Statistically significant results for gender differences emerge from the research in the type of sports discipline the respondents participate in. No statistically significant gender distinctions were found in the quantity of the out-ofschool physical activities.

Več različnih gibalnih spodbud bo deležen, več različnih športnih zvrsti in gibalnih dejavnosti bo spoznal, večja bo njegova baza gibalnih znanj, iz katere bo črpal v odraslosti, ko bo gibanje predstavljajo ob ustrezni prehrani osrednji dejavnik ohranjanja njegovega zdravja. Knjiga pa bo pomembno gradivo tudi vsem ženskam pri prepoznavanju vzorcev spolne diskriminacije in lastnem omejevanju, kar je prvi korak, ki vodi k ukrepanju ter zavzemanju za enake možnosti. Znanstvena monografija Ženske in šport opozarja na vrednost posameznikove svobode na področju športnega udejstvovanja in bo nepogrešljiva referenca za nadaljnje raziskave na tem področju. Zato lahko le upamo, da nas bo avtorica kmalu razveselila z njenim nadaljevanjem.
