BIOGRAPHY OF PETER BISONG BISONG
Peter Bisong Bisong (1982---) was born into the family of Mr. Samuel Bisong Oyong and Regina Barong Otu from Ntamante in Boki L.G.A of Nigeria. His educational life started in Army Brigade Primary/Nursery School, Lagos State at age of 5. His primary education was however completed in Lutheran Primary School, Uyo, where his father who worked for the Ministry of Works was transferred to. Upon successfully completing his primary education, he was enrolled into Community Secondary Commercial College, Akwa Ibom State (COMSECOM). It was in this school that the genius in Bisong, started emerging. While at the primary school, Bisong was considered to be dull intellectually and was always jeered at by friends and family for his poor result but from the second year in the secondary school, he shone to the delight of many. He was always at the top of his class, regarding performance in exams. He maintained this stride until the end of his secondary school, which ended in Ekpashi Technical College, Ntamante.
Upon completion of his secondary school, Bisong felt a great urge to serve God as a Catholic Priest. He thus enrolled into St. Joseph Major Seminary, Nigeria. There in the seminary, he had no choice than to study philosophy. As he himself explained, he disliked philosophy, particularly because of his science oriented background, which made it very difficult for him to cope with an art course. Since philosophy was mandatory in the seminary, he decided to endure it, just to be qualified for ordination, a decision he later regretted because it cost him a first class degree.
After having a taste of the seminary and bagging his philosophy degree, he made a U-turn in his life, a decision, he claims he has not regretted. He withdrew from the seminary and his quest to be a catholic priest in 2006. When quizzed why he took the decision, he always answered, “I peeped into the priesthood, and didn’t like what I saw in there … I think I will not fit well in the priesthood”. Though, this decision did not go well with his parents and friends who attempted to make him change his mind. He remained adamant and always maintained that he chose the seminary by himself and is also free to drop it. This marked the first part of his life.
Upon leaving the seminary, he sought to further his education. Not so much in love with philosophy, he applied for Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management, which will enable him to do his Master’s Degree in Business Management. However, to his surprise he was admitted directly into master degree programme in Business Management. Thinking it was an error, he complained to the authorities that he applied for a postgraduate Diploma and not a Master’s programme and was informed that his high CGPA qualified him for a direct Masters programme. He accepted the admission and successfully graduated with distinction.
Upon completion of his Master’s Degree in Business Management in the University of Calabar, he was faced with the prospect of enrolling for Ph.D in Business Management. But characteristic of him, he made another decision that got tongues wagging – he chose to go back to philosophy for his Masters. His claim is that, he felt empty after studying management and did not feel as if he has learnt anything. He compared his Master’s Degree in Management and his Bachelor Degree in Philosophy, and concluded that philosophy imparted more to his life than management. The desire to get more from philosophy, took him back for a Master’s Degree in Philosophy. He saw philosophy as liberating, enlightening and life-changing. Philosophy in his words “does not just open your eyes, it gives you a unique way of life. It is the reason, anyone who comes in contact with a true philosopher, always ask, are you a philosopher? When you answer yes, he/she will acclaim, no wonder!”
He finished his Master’s Degree in Philosophy (Ethics) in record time and with distinction and enrolled immediately for his doctorate programme in Environmental Ethics, which he also finished in record time, ahead of his classmates.
Due to his perceived brilliance, he was immediately employed as a lecturer in February 2017 in the Department of Philosophy, University of Calabar, where he schooled. Thereafter, he also got a call to be a visiting lecturer at Cross River State University of Technology, Nigeria. St. Joseph Major Seminary, where he began his tertiary education also called him to serve as a visiting lecturer, which he accepted, just for the purpose of service to an institution that introduced him to philosophy that, became his love and addiction.
