In September 2021 a small group of archaeologists, members of the Uni-versity of Fl... more In September 2021 a small group of archaeologists, members of the Uni-versity of Florence excavations at Tell Afis, made return to Syria and took part into an expedition concerning not the site itself, out of reach due to the political crisis in the country since 2011, but materials from the site kept in the expedition house written at Saraqib. This article is an account of that return and of the following ones in 2022 written with the aim to keep attention on Syria, its important past and its critical present.

The passage from the 3 rd to the 2 nd millennium BC in Inner Syria is still a matter for debate b... more The passage from the 3 rd to the 2 nd millennium BC in Inner Syria is still a matter for debate both in historical and archaeological studies. This is only partially due to lack of evidence: it is much the way one interprets the extant evidence that affects the discourse, emphasizing a break or a transition, and viewing this time as a period of crisis or not. In this article relevant archaeological evidence from the site of Tell Afis is revised and some new data, including 14C dates, are offered in order to resume discussion on the question. Focus will be specifically on pottery: by recovering various strands of development in the local pottery repertoires from the Early Bronze to the Middle Bronze, the article aims to contribute to the reconstruction of this archaeological phase at a regional level as well.

Matthiae e cofinanziato dal Ministero dell°Istruzione, dell°Università e della Ricerca. Il finanziamento del Ministero degli Affari Esteri alla Missione Archeologica di Tell Afis ha consentito lo svolgimento delle campagne di scavi e prospezioni, l°allestimento di nuove vetrine al Museo di Idlib e il completamento dei lavori di restauro del cenotafio medievale e ottomano dello Sheikh Hasan ad Afis. Un finanziamento dell"Università di Pisa, per il quale si ringrazia il Rettore, prof. Luciano Modica, ha reso possibile il recupero di mobili e attrezzature e il loro trasporto in Siria per l'allestimento dei laboratori nella sede della missione a Saraqeb, dove si svolgono le attività di ricerca e di formazione. Più di 500 reperti, comprendenti figurine, utensili, arredi, sigilli, ornamenti, sono stati catalogati ed esaminati (G. Scandone Matthiae). Nell°ambito di un progetto organico di studio paleozoologico (B. Wilkens) e antropometrico (F. Mallegni), tutti i residui ossei sono stati raccolti ed inventariati. Il materiale ceramico e i metalli so-7 no stati restaurati (A. Graziani, M. Palsitti), disegnati insieme agli oggetti (M. Epifani, S. Martelli) e fotografati (M. Necci); l"impianto topografico ed rilievi realizzati sul terreno (M. Epifani, S. Martelli) sono stati informatizzati (C. Alvaro). Un ricco corredo di industria litica, comprendente più di 400 pezzi, è stato studiato (C. De Gregorio). Più di 772 lotti di ceramica per 600 unità stratigrafiche sono stati schedati e studiati. La missione durante la sua permanenza si è valsa del prezioso aiuto di Riyadh Saba°e di Fajar Hajji Mohammed, ispettori della Direzione delle Antichità di Siria, e di Abdo Asfari, direttore del Museo di Idlib, il cui sostegno è stato fondamentale nella sistemazione del cenotafio di Sheikh Hasan. Il primo intervento di risistemazione e di restauro architettonico di questo monumento, che domina l°acropoli di Tell Afis, costituendone oggi un importante punto di richiamo e di venerazione, è stato diretto dall°architetto Mu"annad Hassan. All°Università di Pisa e di Bologna si svolgono, dopo la chiusura degli scavi, le attività di catalogazione informatica e di completamento della schedatura e messa in bella del materiale grafico; un programma di formazione archeologica nello scavo a Tell Afis e di addestramento sui materiali nel Laboratorio di Archeologia del Vicino Oriente dell"Università di Pisa destinato a studenti avanzati, laureandi e specializzandi, viene svolto da anni, non solo dai docenti, ma anche grazie alla collaborazione generosa di alcuni giovani studiosi delle tre università, i cui contributi compaiono in queste pagine. In 1999 the discovery of a number of door sealings in the palace at Mozan, ancient Urkeš, with th... more In 1999 the discovery of a number of door sealings in the palace at Mozan, ancient Urkeš, with the impressions of the seal of Tarʼam-Agade, a Naram-Sin’s daughter previously unknown, threw a new light not only on the history of the site but also on the important role of Akkadian women in diplomacy and international relations. This paper looks back to some objects belonging to Akkadian women excavated elsewhere in Northern Syria, already known in the literature, with the aim to bring further food for thought on the question in the light of the Mozan evidence.

The strategies to overcome mourning and deal with the end of a human life are numerous and varied. This article tackles the question of representations of naked women in Near Eastern Art by approa... more This article tackles the question of representations of naked women in Near Eastern Art by approaching specific iconographic types within the group of nude females occurring in a number of different media in Mesopotamia and Syria. Archaeological as well as textual data are taken into consideration in order to provide contextual analyses. Aim of this work is to provide new insights in the much debated question over the range of meanings applied to similar images in the visual language of that part of the ancient world.
Recent advancements in scholarly approaches to the topic of death in the Ancient Near East have b... more Recent advancements in scholarly approaches to the topic of death in the Ancient Near East have been particularly remarkable. If much effort has been put into the reconstruction of the ritual activities behind the formation of burial remains, nonetheless many aspects of the full ritual cycle centered around death are still to be investigated. Mourning practices remain on the whole a very underrated topic in comparison with other areas, and the heuristic potential intrinsic to burials and graves in connection to them is totally unexplored. The Florence workshop provided the opportunity to discuss these issues in the face of new data, and of new interpretations of old data, aiming to give a contribution towards a deeper understanding of Syrian funerary practices.
