The present study examines the development of repeated reading (RR) on accuracy, fluency, and com... more The present study examines the development of repeated reading (RR) on accuracy, fluency, and comprehension for EFL learners. The participants getting involved in the study were 13 males and 14 females who took extensive reading in a regular class. They read similar type of passages ranges from 311 up to 564 words, with a mean length of 425.46 words for twelve weeks. Pre-test was conducted prior to the treatment by reading out loud and answering the comprehension questions on the passage. Having done the treatment, post-test was administered and the participants did the same way as it was in the pre-test. Data were collected and analyzed using t-test for correlated samples since the data were obtained from the same group. The result showed that there was significant difference between the first and the last post-test since probability was lower than alpha (p < .05). There is a tendency in the development of EFL learners' fluency to be steady with slight increase. Yet, the accuracy increased sharply without having detrimental effect on comprehension.

It is the creativity and adaptation of the teachers to try to tackle this varied success of L2 acquisition, especially in accordance with individual difference. In Indonesia this includes education and cultural background, personality, as well as the age to start learning English which is done intensely mostly by older students. This personal matters will contribute to learning style preference, which in the long run help to know the rationale of choosing learning strategies. Teachers need to help synchronising learning style with learning strategies. Learning strategies are ‘typically problem-oriented’, and function more as problem solving. Those of good language learners can help to solve the problem of the weak learners. Learning strategies can be employed to refute the myth that older learners have little chance to success, it can even be more effective by way of strategies training, and improving students’ self responsibility. This paper aims to discuss the factors needed to be creatively adapted by teachers to facilitate the success of FL and L2 acquisition, and it is recommended to do strategies training like SBI.

IELTS is high stakes and gate keeping test for international students to participate at instituti... more IELTS is high stakes and gate keeping test for international students to participate at institutions and universities in English speaking countries. Considering its big impact to the future of test-takers (the students) as well as fulfilling the demand of language proficiency to succeed in the study at universities, and to understand better the need of different stakeholders. Therefore, ongoing research for development, revision, and also evolution have been done by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment (jointly are the owners of IELTS) in order to address the problem, limitation and disadvantages, moreover mainly to assure its validity, reliability and consistency in doing the assessment, particularly of IELTS speaking test. This paper illustrates the review, limitation, standardization and revision. In terms of review, Brown and Hudson (2002, p.72) suggest that the disadvantages of performance test are " difficult to create; take considerable time to administer; may result in increased costs; causes logistical problems; creates reliability and validity problems; increase the risk of security breaches ". For the limitation, verbal interview has subjective interpretation and also factor of gender of raters and test-takers that influence the scoring procedure. To maintain scoring consistency and steadiness, standardisation of test management is done through training, retraining, certification, monitoring, multiply rated, and video-rating. In 2001, interview format and criteria underwent revision to ascertain IELTS speaking test remains fair and unbiased. This paper tries to enlighten necessary consideration to speaking assessment developers to successfully provide evidence of representativeness of the skills and knowledge required.

Considering historical ‘superiority’ and English as ‘capital’, non-native speakers (NNS) tend to ... more Considering historical ‘superiority’ and English as ‘capital’, non-native speakers (NNS) tend to outnumber native-speakers (NS), making English as a lingua franca (ELF). Jenkins (2006a) claims that with the large number of NNS, their pronunciation becomes potential characteristic. Non native-like is less of a sign of incompetence but more of a potential characteristics in its own. This paper discusses what ELT needs to change and adapt, namely ‘teachable’ and ‘learnable’ - as like pronunciation promoting ‘global intelligibility’ among all English speakers. Bearing in mind that mother tongue (L1) to some extend may impact NNS’ English, therefore training is needed to avoid deviation which may impede understanding. Moreover, NNS are motivated to ‘accommodate’ and be ‘tolerant’ to their NNS interlocutors, which consequently promote ‘no threat to intelligibility’ for other NNS receivers. In addition to pronunciation, NNS’ interaction and misunderstanding will also play worthwhile role to be included in ELT’s consideration.
