This study draws from histories of “educationalisation” and neo-Foucaultian histories of English teaching in an archival analysis that revisits landmark pedagogical texts that coincided with the rapid expansion of the school subject English in between the 1894 Report of the Committee of Ten and 1918 Cardinal Principles of Secondary Education. The archival analysis considers these two reform documents along with the first comprehensive books on English teaching, which were published between the 1890s and 1920s. The study’s analysis adopts a selective focus on their explicit aims and rationales for teaching English, particularly in secondary schools, and the pedagogic logics and practices by which English was imagined as a governmental response to various social problems. This archival work recovers the largely overlooked ways in which the teaching of English was positioned to improve the moral and social condition of the population, to develop youths’ capacities for self-governance, to professionalise teaching through the psychological sciences, and to include “problem” populations within the corrective spaces of the English classroom. It also illustrates how distinctive approaches to teaching English language and literature were understood to attune youths’ “souls” to a range of governmental norms. This study bridges ideas from two historical literatures in order to unearth “educationalisation” problematics and “governmental” practices that traditional histories of English teaching have largely obscured, particularly in the United States.

This research aims to examine the practices of university English Language (EL) teachers in e-learning and to explore perspectives on the challenges and prospects of e-learning. It is an exploratory study which adopts a pragmatic paradigm and a mixed method approach to inquiry. A survey design and a phenomenological design are used in this research to investigate the use of technology by the teachers of EL at Umm AlQura University (UQU) in Saudi Arabia (SA) and to explore their lived experiences as well as their views in relation to the challenges and prospects of e-learning implementation. It uses both quantitative data taken from a closed-ended survey (N=43) and qualitative data taken from a Focus Group (FG) with ten university EL teachers who teach English for Specific Purposes (ESP, i.e. medical purposes) in a country where English is used as a foreign language. The research seeks to examine the university EL teachers' practices of e-learning in their teaching and to explore their perspectives on the challenges and prospects of the implementation of e-learning.

Numerous scholarly works extol the use of LGBTQ themed literature as part of English language arts instruction with the implication that its use may improve the school climate for LGBTQ students; however, there is a dearth of research that empirically examines whether or not this type of instruction measurably impacts adolescents' homophobia. To address this paucity, this study examined the ability of a dialogically organized, reader response–based instructional unit of the young adult novel Geography Club to reduce adolescents' homophobia. A quasi-experimental design was used with eighth grade students in seven English language arts classes. Homophobia was measured using a researcher-created scale. Analysis of pretests revealed that girls had lower levels of homophobia than boys and that Black students had higher levels of homophobia than Hispanic students. Posttest results indicated that the intervention was successful in lowering homophobia. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a three factor solution: Interpersonal Homophobia, Attitudes toward Homophobia, and Sexuality as a Choice. Post-hoc tests revealed differing effect sizes for the aforementioned factors and showed that there was no backlash to treatment in participants with high pretest homophobia. This paper argues that schools and teacher education programs should make a serious effort to incorporate LGBTQ themed texts into curricula as part of a concerted effort to reduce the culture of homophobic violence that has become institutionalized in many schools.

Race has always been a topic that is associated with different emotions, views, and thoughts for thousands of years. Since the beginning of times, people from different racial backgrounds such as Africans have always been judged and treated based on their race or where they were born. Brent Staples was among the renowned African American writers that fought against the negative stereotyping of black men in public spaces through his article, “Black Men and Public Space” in which he employs numerous rhetorical uses that add more appeal to his descriptions of experiences as a black man in public spaces. Staples’ article is a great example of how racism despite the progress made over the years, is still present. In writing this essay, Brent Staples reveals how black men, in spite of all their qualifications and achievements in life, are still discriminated against, for simply taking a walk. The author uses many examples of how different white Americans show racial stereotyping, from law enforcement to random people walking at night, which not only reveals how some Americans can be ignorant but also how they are likely to judge a person based on their skin color without considering other aspects of their life.

Moving Beyond Personal Loss to Societal Grieving considers how secondary English language arts teachers can thoughtfully teach pieces of literature in their classrooms in which large-scale deaths are a significant aspect of the texts. Each chapter provides practical activities for students to engage with loss through writing, projects, and prompts.

A key to reading comprehension is understanding the message conveyed and it depends heavily on the understanding of the meaning of words appeared in the text. For students, reading comprehension becomes one of the skills that they are more familiar with since they deal with reading texts every day even in examinations. This situation drives students to cope with many unfamiliar English words causing them stuck in comprehending the message conveyed. Therefore, assisting students to improve their comprehension by inferring word meaning from context is very important. This research aims to investigate English students' perceptions of using WhatsApp in paragraph writing class in one public university. Paragraph writing class is a part of language disciplines which may get some benefits from the usage of SNS. This qualitative research with a case study approach explores the perceptions of English students on the benefits and limitations of using WhatsApp during their learning activities. There were six participants in this research that the researcher got through purposive sampling; two students who got high, average, and low score of pre-test. Among the lessons that emerged after the recent presidential election is a recognition that teachers are generally not prepared to address the intersections of healing, politics, and emotion in classrooms. Now, more than ever, English educators must address trauma in classrooms, while also recognizing how individuals and groups are positioned differently in the material and emotional stakes of this election. Drawing on research, the voices of teachers, and our experiences over this past year, we call for more expansive conversations among English educators across perspectives concerned with creating safe, relational, anti-oppressive classrooms.

Learning a target language is actually a process of trial and error, whether as the first, the second or even foreign language. This study is aimed to find out the mistakes within the descriptive texts. The method used in this study was a qualitative approach, and the design was discourse analysis. The data were taken from the 27 descriptive texts written by the fourth semester students of English Department, while the technique of analysis was based on the error analysis theory, involved: collection of a sample, identification, description and explanation. The generic structure result showed that the students could write well in the identification and aspect part, but not in conclusion part. In case of lexicogrammatical features, the use of verbs caused the most number of mistakes, or 132 mistakes (30.07%), while the fewest ones was the use of adjective, found only 4 times (0.91%) of the total mistakes. This paper entitled "The Portrayal of the Role-Play Implementation in Teaching Speaking to the Students of Tourism Study Program" was intended to investigate how role-play is implemented in teaching speaking to the students of Tourism Study Program and the students’ responses towards the implementation of role-play. The participants of this study were an English teacher and eleventh grade students of one vocational high school in Bandung. Qualitative approach was used as the research method by employing non-participant observation and questionnaires to attain the data. The findings showed that the implementation of role-play motivated the students in learning English and help the students bridge the theory into practice. However, the role-play could not be optimally utilized to develop the students’ speaking ability because the teacher violated some principals in teaching speaking and some elements in the implementation of role-play. : This research aims at investigating how multimedia facilitates young learners’ learning English. The study utilized a descriptive method. This comprised observing, collecting data, classifying data, and analyzing data. Observation to the multimedia is carried out to seek for steps of lessons and the steps are facilitating young learners leaning. The subjects in this study were series of multimedia programs. The results showed that the multimedia programs have presented to five young learners’ learning traits in designing the lessons. Those traits were transferred in terms of activities presented into stages, time allotment/duration, having specific topic, providing songs and funny cartoon characters and scenes, and materials recycling in the lessons. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of multimedia program is beneficial and recommended either in a classroom as a supplementary activity, at home for home learning or watch for fun. The study aimed to investigate (a) the effect of digital games, songs, and flashcards on vocabulary knowledge of Iranian EFL preschool learners and (b) the young learners" performance on mid-course tests of vocabulary with different topics. The participants included 350 preschool female learners in Oshnaviyeh, a town in Western Azarbaijan Province and were divided into three tablet, song, and traditional groups. Pre and post-tests of vocabulary and four mid-course tests based, on the learnt vocabularies, were administered during the research. The materials also consisted of a digital game, 16 songs, a structured student book, a workbook, and 60 flashcards. The analysis of the data revealed that there was no significant difference in the vocabulary knowledge of preschool learners who learnt vocabularies via games, songs, and flashcards. This paper is about Sapphires. The Sapphires is an Australian dramatic and comedy movie about four women singers. In May 2012, it premiered in Australia during the Cannes Festival. The Movie is about a group of indigenous women, Gail Julie, Kay, and Cynthia, who decide to form a music group after being discovered by a scout.  In 1968, they travel to Vietnam to sing for the military troops during the war. The production of the movie began in 2010, after the selection of all the four members of “The Sapphires group”, and the filming took place in a variety of locations in Vietnam, New South Wales, and Australia.

This research aimed at explaining the improvement of the students' Writing ability in writing component of organitation and writing component of content. To explain the improvement, the researcher used a Classroom Action Research (CAR) which was conducted in two cycles in which every cycle consisted of four meetings. The location of this research was taken at the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Bontonompo Selatan with the number of the subject 30 students with 20 women and 10 men. Instruments are test and observation. The findings of the research were the result of students' mean score in organization was 50 after evaluation in cycle I it became 63.16 data source (D-Test) it became 78.16 % D-test in cycle II, the students' mean score of content was 50,93 after evaluation in cycle I it became 64.16 and it became 79 in cycle II. The students' observation was 67.5 % in cycle 1 and it became 82.5 % in cycle 2. It means that Team Assisted Individualization is one of the effective teaching strategies for the eleventh grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Bontonompo Selatan to improve their writing ability in Argumentation paragraph.

The objective of this study is to figure out whether the use of animation videos improve students’ speaking skill to the second-year students at SMP Negeri 16 Banda Aceh. The method of this study was quantitative research (experimental study) with one group pre-test and post-test design. The sample of this research was one class at VIII-1 which consists of 30 students. The researcher used simple random sampling to determine the sample. The researcher used an oral test to collect the data about giving a dialogue (an expression to invite someone) with their partner. In analyzing the data, the researcher used a statistical formula to measure the data. The calculation result showed that the mean score of students' pre-test score was 21 and the mean score of the post-test was 41. Then, the t-score was 4.89 and the t-table was 2.045. This research is intended to find out whether Suggestopedia method improved students’ reading comprehension. This research was conducted at SMPN 8 Banda Aceh. The sample was taken by random sampling of the students of class VIII-1. The technique of data collection, the researcher used pre-test, treatment and post-test. The materials used in the test were narrative texts. The reading comprehension which tested was main idea, detail information, vocabulary and reference. The researcher used one group pre-test and post-test design. The tests consisted of 10 multiple choice questions of narrative texts. Purpose-This paper aims to argue for the curricular inclusion of youth-generated young adult literature (YAL) alongside canonical literature and adult-generated YAL. The authors support this argument with the results of a qualitative analysis of youth memoir published in The Best Teen Writing. They strive to inform the debate between educators who value memoir as part of the secondary curriculum and critics who question the ability of youth to write purposeful, meaningful narrative. Additionally, the authors also present memoir as a unique genre for youth to document and process adolescence, and for youth to speak to issues which they deem important.

Design/methodology/approach-Informed theoretically by the Youth Lens, which considers how texts reinforce and/or disrupt various figurations of adolescence and youth, this study uses a multistage qualitative analysis of 83 youth memoir published in nine volumes of the Best Teen Writing from 2010 to 2018. First, the authors conducted a Labovian plot analysis to consider what themes and topics were present as well as what this sample could teach us about youth. Next, they analyzed the sample for genre hallmarks specific to creative nonfiction and memoir to consider the question of quality of youth memoir.

Findings-The findings suggest that there is no typical adolescence and that youth are balancing complex, intersectional identities, which they write about skillfully through memoir. These findings directly contrast with critics of youth memoir. Rather than clichéd, the memoirs the authors analyzed show youth as intercultural, capable of thoughtful reflection, capturing the transitory state of their youth (knowing they are not children anymore and lightly speculating about their future), skillfully integrating memoir genre hallmarks, and recording important events and perspectives with appeal to a broader readership. Furthermore, these findings position youth memoir as worthy of curricular inclusion alongside adult-generated YAL.

Originality/value-If the critics of youth memoir are the loudest voices, youth memoir will be, at best, relegated as examples for writers rather than seen as valid additions to curricular canon. This work gives due credit to the quality of published youth memoir to showcase their potential for curricular and canonical addition. This study builds on smaller-scale case studies and personal accounts to make an argument for curricular inclusion of youth voices and youth memoir in the secondary canon.

As the title of the novel suggests, what “all-American” means—and those who are excluded from it despite the seemingly encompassing term—becomes an issue. The narrative shows the apparent similarities between the two boys to further emphasize the underlying differences in their situation. This novel did not present racism in essentialized terms. Rather, the internal conflicts that Rashad and Quinn experience are central to the ways in which they work through understanding their own racial identities. Rather than blaming an entire group or community, the narrative encourages readers to see how prevalent and pervasive issues of racism are and to act to make a difference. The book stresses the importance of each person recognizing his or her role in these problems and taking a stance. Being “neutral” is an option that is discouraged.

There is an enormous need for education to teach students what are termed 21 st-century skills. One might ask why this sudden shift and attention are given to certain skills. Reality provides an answer. In the job market, for instance, the traditional way of teaching seems to produce more jobless people simply because the requirements of the economy do not match the desired result of 12years, at the minimum, of learning in schools. Why do not we update the methods of teaching? People say, "If it is not broken, do not fix it." Actually, it is broken. Therefore, teachers attempt to focus on the teaching of 21 st-century skills through some strategies and techniques. In this study, the researcher investigates the existence of 21 stcentury skills, mainly the Four Cs; Critical thinking, Creativity, Collaboration, and Communication, and the effectiveness of some strategies used to promote these skills.

This paper reports findings from a study investigating trends in character, historical setting, authorship and themes across Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) text selection lists between 2010 and 2019. We address the fictionalisation and imagining of Australian history through narratives about Indigeneity and settler-colonisation. While we will describe positive trends that have emerged over time, by and large this study agrees with Leane's (2016) and Langton's (1993) assertions regarding the transmission of knowledge and representation of Indigeneity and Australian history in the classroom; namely, there is an under-representation of Indigenous authors, poets, playwrights, film directors, and complex, non-stereotypical charactertypes and an over-representation of non-Indigenous authors representing themes and stories of Indigeneity, reconciliation and colonisation.

This instructional article outlines the qualities of effective ePortfolios and how reflection and student growth is measured. Student exemplars and assessment rubrics show how, despite changing tools and evolving standards, sustained collaboration and student coaching yields reflective practitioners in content areas and in technological knowledge. As part of summative assessment within a teacher preparation program, teacher candidates prepare an ePortfolio to demonstrate reflective practice and growth in learning across their arts and humanities programs (e.g., within the Music K-12, History and Social Sciences 6-12, and English 6-12 teacher licensure programs). El artículo explora teóricamente el uso de redes sociales en la enseñanza y aprendizaje de idiomas. El objetivo es conocer su presencia en la disciplina. La literatura permitió observar las redes sociales existentes y motivos que evitan que sean integradas al plan de estudios. Inicio definiendo redes sociales y explorándolas en tres niveles: educación, enseñanza y aprendizaje de idiomas, y aquellas especializadas en la disciplina. Después se exploran factores de su limitada implementación: institucionales (planeación y decisiones colegiadas), personales (contar con acceso a dispositivos e Internet) y pedagógicas (poseer habilidades y destrezas para usarlas). Las conclusiones mencionan que la implementación está creciendo, mejorando planeación y encontrando áreas de oportunidad.

This study aimedto analyze: (1) the application of “CLLS” in learning English reading comprehension among the students of year 8 ofthe MTs. Ma’arif Malangbong, (2) their perception toward the application of “CLLS”, (3) their achievement on reading comprehension using “CLLS”, (4) their problems in using “CLLS”, and (5) the solutions to improve their knowledge and skill of using “CLLS”. The objective of this study was to identify the types of pronunciation error, causes of pronunciation error, the teacher/students way to overcome pronunciation error, and teacher’s influence in causing students pronunciation error. The method of this study was descriptive qualitative. The objects of this study were 15 students of eleventh graders Global Madani School Bandar Lampung. The texts were 15 texts consisted of 2.417 words. The text were read by the students then were analyzed by the researcher. The result of the data analysis showed that the student’s pronunciation errors were defined into three types. They were pre-systematic, systematic, and post-systematic errors. The students got the difficulties in pronouncing /ŋ/, /d/, /ʤ/, /ʧ/, /z/, /ð/, /θ/, /∫/, and /g/. These phoneme errors were found in the initial, medial and final positions of the words. In this study, I examine the various discourses that influence and inhabit the field of young adult literature in English teacher education. Data was collected from participants that published with the Assembly on Literature for Adolescents of the National Council of Teachers of English (The ALAN Review) in 2017-2018 (Volumes 44(2)-46(1)), and were teacher educators working in language and literacy education with preservice teachers and young adult (YA) literature (YAL). Participants submitted course materials like course syllabi that included required and choice reading lists, calendars, and assessments that were then analyzed to create an understanding of how YAL fit into teacher education now to be able to think about the future of the field with this foundational knowledge in place.

I draw upon Mikhail Bakhtin’s theories of the centripetal and centrifugal nature of language within heteroglossia to examine how the purposes included on these course syllabi reflect the struggle of individual voices to be heard within heteroglossic spaces, and how active analysis on the part of teacher educators and preservice teachers to understand the competing discourses within YAL can allow the voice of the student to be raised up and hierarchies of power to be flattened. Findings indicate that YAL courses provide diverse ways of meeting the individual reading needs of both secondary students and preservice teachers.

These poems, composed in Somali and in English, provide a poetic reflection of the recently emerged debate on the theme of Caddaan Studies which means "White Studies". The criticism and counter-criticism contained in the debate dug so deep into life nerve of Somali Studies that over a thousand people participated. The poems, under the title "Inaugurating Caddaan Studies" were composed with a critical observation of the debate.

The current use of podcasts, as a new channel to input knowledge, has effectively been promoting listening comprehension which consequently has increased the acquisition of target language. The objective of the present study is to investigate the effects of video-podcasts integration on listening comprehension. The twelve-week quantitative study employed a quasi-experimental pre-test post-test design. Samples included in both the control and experimental groups were 120 English major male undergraduates from a University in Saudi Arabia. The Findings of ANCOVA analysis showed that the video-podcast group significantly outperformed the control group on the post-test. The findings imply that video-podcasts are useful resource for enhancing EFL learners’ listening comprehension. Article visualizations:
