Bezeichnend für Philosophie und Religiosität der römischen Kaiserzeit und Spätantike ist ein hohe... more Bezeichnend für Philosophie und Religiosität der römischen Kaiserzeit und Spätantike ist ein hohes Maß an Interaktion zwischen unterschiedlichen Richtungen. Nicht zu unterschätzen ist dabei die Bedeutung eher randständiger und oft exotisch anmutender Strömungen und Texte wie Gnosis, Hermetismus, Chaldaeische Orakel etc., die in intensiver Wechselwirkung mit den konventionelleren Spielarten insbesondere des Platonismus stehen. Ausgehend davon nehmen die Beiträge des vorliegenden Sammelbandes in den Blick, inwiefern die religiösen Veränderungen in der ‚oikoumene‘ des Mittelmeerraums durch solche Formen der Philosophie beeinflusst wurden oder umgekehrt auf diese zurückgewirkt haben.
Besonderes Augenmerk gilt Formen der Spiritualität, der Kontroverse und der Identitätsbildung in der Diskussion um die kanonische Geltung von Lehrmeinungen und autoritativen oder heiligen Texten. Zu nennen sind insbesondere die Auseinandersetzung Plotins mit der Gnosis, die Bedeutung von Orakeltexten für die Entwicklung des spätantiken Platonismus oder der Richtungskampf zwischen Porphyrios und Iamblichos. Dabei wird deutlich, wie neben Formen offener Übernahme oder Ablehnung zum Teil auch unterschwellige Rezeption zum Tragen kommt.

These figures witnessed to the fundamental contribution and rich cultural tradition of the Jesuit... more These figures witnessed to the fundamental contribution and rich cultural tradition of the Jesuit order in the Baltic region, in which the Jesuit province of Poland was created in 1576 and that Lithuania was established in 1608. 3 Unfortunately, his untimely death at the age of 35 prevented Rudamina from publishing as many works on Chinese Christianity as did other European Jesuits. Nevertheless, there is a relatively brief sketch of his activity as a preacher in the 口鐸日鈔, Kouduo Richao, or Diary of Oral Admonitions. This text was published in the early forties of the 17th century and has recently been edited by Nicholas Staendert and Erich Zürcher. It is a long work, about 400 pages, that records the conversations between Giulio Aleni (the 'Westerner Confucius'), 4 other Jesuits, and Chinese intellectuals in the Fujian province on various subjects that include not only Christianity, but Western sciences and art as well. 5 This text is an invaluable source for the reconstruction of the daily religious life of a typical Christian mission 254 3 The 59th (2011) issue of the Journal Monumenta Serica is dedicated to these missionaries, with articles written by L. Grzebień; J. Konior; J. łukaszewska-Haberkowa. Special attention is drawn on Boym, whose work provides an invaluable example of the scientific attitude displayed by the Jesuits when dealing with Chinese botany and zoology (the illustrations are particularly relevant), as well as geography, medicine, and astronomy.
