The Italian Archaeological Mission in Sudan has been working on the site of Jebel Barkal – ancien... more The Italian Archaeological Mission in Sudan has been working on the site of Jebel Barkal – ancient Napata – since 1973, focusing in particular on its Meroitic royal district dating to the 1st century CE.
This area develops around the Palace of king Natakamani, which appears to be surrounded by several buildings connected to the ceremonial apparatus of the Meroitic kingship – mostly pavilions and kiosks; all these edifices show a clear evidence of foreign influences, not only reflected in their architectural structure but also in the objects brought to light during their excavation.
A model for the royal area of ancient Napata may possibly be traced in the Hellenistic world, especially as regards the architectural and decorative features characterising the Palace of Natakamani, on which the Hellenising influence is clearly recognisable.
As far as some of the most important finds are concerned, we can emphasise the presence of specific pottery classes, characterised by an outstandingly fine fabric, probably imported via the Roman world and resulted by the commercial routes established within the Mediterranean area, but also metal objects and decorative stone elements clearly inspired by Hellenistic models.
The aim of this paper is, therefore, to present all those connecting elements between the Meroitic and the Hellenistic culture recognisable in ancient Napata during the 1st century CE, focusing on the topography of the site, the main architectural features of its buildings and, finally, on the categories of finds which can express the eclecticism of a culture capable of combining different aspects of an old local tradition with strong external influences.

Scavi Italiani in Sudan"-attualmente ospitata presso il Museo di Scultura Antica Giovanni Barracco a Roma-sono compresi cinque oggetti conservati presso il Museo del Vicino Oriente, Egitto e Mediterraneo dell'Università Sapienza di Roma e rinvenuti nel sito dell'antica Napata, dove opera attualmente la Missione Archeologica Italiana in Sudan-Jebel Barkal (Università Ca' Foscari di Venezia). Si tratta di reperti donati negli anni Settanta e Ottanta dalle Antichità Sudanesi al fondatore della Missione, Prof. Sergio Donadoni: una statuetta antropomorfa in calcare, un anello con castone in bronzo, una lucerna in terracotta, un frammento di ceramica dipinta e il calco di una delle statue di leoni rinvenute presso gli ingressi del Palazzo reale di Natakamani al Jebel Barkal. Il contributo intende presentare questi materiali, proponendo due principali percorsi di indagine: 1. Una ricostruzione del contesto di rinvenimento originario, attraverso lo studio autoptico e la documentazione della Missione. 2. Una loro contestualizzazione nell'ambito del Museo della Sapienza e, più nel dettaglio, della sezione di antichità meroitiche di cui sono parte.

The lion is one of the most spread and evergreen symbols of the Egyptian kingship; the “lion king... more The lion is one of the most spread and evergreen symbols of the Egyptian kingship; the “lion king” motif recurs in traditional iconography and in royal inscriptions as attribute of power, domination, strength. In the same time, the lion-gods are characterized by ambivalent value and invested with destructive but also protective potentiality.
In Nubia the lion-divinity begins to take on importance in the passage between Napatan and Meroitic phases: a leonine god joins Amun like the protector of royalty, especially in central and northern Sudan; he could be the result of syncretic phenomena with the lion-headed god Mahes, but his name is purely Meroitic: Apedemak.
This work is intended to give an overview about the iconographic evidence of the lion-god Apedemak, protector of kingship and guardian of the Meroitic royal district at Jebel Barkal, currently being excavated by the Italian Archaeological Mission in Sudan.

La Festa del Nuovo Anno, con la sua promessa di ordine e rinnovamento, costituiva un evento molto atteso del calendario liturgico meroitico. Le tematiche tradizionalmente connesse con la celebrazione dell’arrivo della piena annuale sono declinate nelle espressioni multiformi nella cultura materiale dell’area palatina di Jebel Barkal. Qui, l’artigianato fa largo uso di figurazione specializzata per le diverse produzioni, combinando motivi simbolici, vegetali, animali e divini nella decorazione di elementi architettonici in pietra, appliques in faïence, contenitori in ceramica e sigilli dell’amministrazione palatina. I temi provengono non solo da repertori tradizionali di matrice nilotica – kushita ed egiziana – afferenti alle dottrine solare e ammoniana, ma anche dalla crescente influenza degli apporti mediterranei, che insistono soprattutto sull’ambito dionisiaco e sul consumo di vino. Si intersecano, così, forme, iconografie e stili variegati, in un linguaggio artistico altamente stratificato, che muove da esperienze diversificate e che, tuttavia, sono rimodulate in maniera originale e coerente dagli artisti della corte di Natakamani e Amanitore.

Despite being passing environmental elements, sacred trees were a somehow immutable part of the a... more Despite being passing environmental elements, sacred trees were a somehow immutable part of the ancient Egyptian temple landscape, relating to mythological geography and religious practice. The nbs-tree, identified with Christ’s thorn jujube, was a widespread species in the Nile Valley, growing at the edges of cultivated land and even in desert oases. As a sacred tree, its name is often mentioned in the so called “geographical lists” of Graeco-Roman tradition, proving it to be one of the most venerated plants together with acacia (SnDt) and balanites (iSd). It was also included in the toponymy of many sites, suggesting strong mythological correlations with national and local deities. The major Egyptian cultic place was Hwt-nbs at Saft el-Henna, but the tree was very important also in Lower Nubia – and beyond, as far as p(A)-nbs, thanks to the association with the Nubian gods Amun of Pnubs and Thot of Pnubs.
The paper presents an overview of the spatial distribution of the ancient nbs-tree according to Graeco-Roman sources, aiming at the reconstruction of phyto-mythological and phyto-geographical traditions between Egypt and Nubia. By analysing the occurrence of the botanical lemma in religious texts – such as the geographical records or the mythological accounts engraved on temple walls – and even considering some iconographical evidence, various aspects of a single res sacra will be described.
