This paper introduces the case of an interactive technology enhanced learning model, its contexts... more This paper introduces the case of an interactive technology enhanced learning model, its contexts and infrastructure at a public university in the Bologna era. From a socio-technological perspective, it takes a look at the conditions and challenges under which this flexible learning model for the social sciences has been developed. Furthermore, selected evaluation results, including experiences and expectations of social science students, are discussed. Über die Rolle der Kultur-und Sozialanthropologie im Verstehen soziotechnischer Lebenswelten Digitale Technik und Technologien haben das Menschsein verändert, und Menschen gestalten und verändern laufend Technik und Technologien. Dieser Aufsatz zeigt, wie die Kultur-und Sozialanthropologie, als Wissenschaft vom sozialen und kulturellen Menschen, den wissenschaftstheoretischen Zugang sowie die Methodenwahl mitgestaltet, um diese komplexe Beziehung zu erfassen, zu beschreiben und letzlich zu verstehen. Dabei wird auch sie von Entwicklungsund Veränderungsprozessen geprägt, die als soziotechnisch-im Sinne der engen Verknüpfung zwischen dem Sozialen und dem Technischen, zwischen Gesellschaft, Technik und Technologie-bezeichnet werden können. So ist die Kultur-und Sozialanthropologie längst nicht mehr nur die Wissenschaft von »einfachen außereuropäischen Kulturen«. 1 Seit Jahrzehnten forschen ihre Ver-treterInnen, zumeist vergleichend, zu komplexen Phänomenen, Prozessen und Veränderungen in unterschiedlichsten menschlichen Gesellschaften. Da war es nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis die ersten AnthropologInnen begannen, sich mit technischen Entwicklungen und wissenschaftlichen Praktiken in Europa und den USA auseinander zu setzen (z. B. Fischer 1999, 2007; Pfaffenberger 1988b, 1992). So kamen schrittweise digitale Informations-, Kommunikations-und Medientechnologien und mit diesen verbundene Prozesse und Praktiken in den Fokus anthropologischer Forschung: von der allgemeinen kulturellen und gesellschaftlichen Bedeutung digitaler Technologieentwicklung und deren Relevanz für das Menschsein und die Disziplin der Anthropologie (z. Performance, wiederum, betrachten wir als einen konzeptionellen Ansatz, um Praktiken zu untersuchen, welche sich nicht nur auf bestimmte performative Situationen oder gesellschaftliche Teilbereiche, wie etwa Handwerk oder Kunst erstrecken. Vielmehr ziehen sie sich quer durch Theater, Politik, Religion und Alltag, wie bereits Victor Turner (1982) und Richard Schechner (1993) aufgezeigt haben. Das ästhetische und leibliche Reaktualisieren und Kreieren von Erfahrungen, die mit performativer Intensivierung, Wirksamkeit und Überzeugung einhergehen, sind hier von besonderer Bedeutung (Hughes-Freeland 2015; Korom 2013b; Tambiah 1985). Anhand unterschiedlicher ethnographischer Beispiele und theoretischer Perspektiven behandeln die AutorInnen im vorliegenden Band Ritualisierung, Mediatisierung und Performance sowie den prozesshaften Charakter ihrer Wechselwirkungen: So thematisiert Werner Zips die postkoloniale Rückbesinnung auf afrikanische Rollenmodelle politischer Autorität (speziell der ghanaischen Königinmutter) in der jamaikanischen Diaspora, im Kontext panafrikanischer Bewegungen und der Musik des Reggae. Adelheid Pichler beschreibt den ritualisierten Umgang mit Artefakten und Ikonographien von Gottheiten der kubanischen Santería als Erinnerungsrepertoires an die Zeit der Sklaverei. Stephanie Schmiderer untersucht die performative Praxis des Vodou der haitianischen Diaspora in New York City anhand ihrer Anpassungsfähigkeit und Wandelbarkeit als religiöses Glaubenssystem und folkloristische Tanz-und Theaterform. Elke Mader analysiert die Ritualisierung und Mediatisierung des »Tanzes für die Pfirsichpalme« der Shuar in Ecuador als vielschichtigen Wandlungsprozess kultureller und politischer Repräsentationen von Indigenität. A blended learning model adapted to the specific requirements is designed to improve the learning situation in mass lectures, encourage self-study processes, and to build up generic competences. The model consists of a hypermedia content pool and virtually assisted exercises. Requirements and challenges of the e-learning project will be discussed in this paper.
Ethnic media are media produced for, and frequently by, immigrants, ethnic and linguistic minorit... more Ethnic media are media produced for, and frequently by, immigrants, ethnic and linguistic minority groups, and indigenous populations. These media represent a sector of the broader media industry that has seen considerable growth globally, even while many mainstream, legacy media have struggled to survive or have ceased to exist, largely due to the emergence of new communication technologies. What is missing in the literature is a careful examination of ethnic media in the digital age. The original research, including case studies, in this book provides insight into (1) what new trends are emerging in ethnic media production and consumption; (2) how ethnic media are adapting to changing technologies in the media landscape of our times; and (3) what enduring roles ethnic media perform in local communities and in an increasingly globalized world. The ethnic media that contributors discuss in this book are produced for and distributed across a variety of platforms, ranging from broadcasting and print to online platforms. This is a short position paper that sets out to briefly discuss how indigenous audio-visual media... more This is a short position paper that sets out to briefly discuss how indigenous audio-visual media production and broadcasting initiatives haven been developed and maintained in Canada. I am concentrating on television which still is the world's dominant audio-visual communication medium. What are the specifics of indigenous media (production) and related practices and processes? And what does the future hold for indigenous media projects? Due to limited time at hand, I am only able to open this field of research by presenting two case studies: the national Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) (e.g., Hafsteinsson 2013, Roth 2005) and Wawatay (e.g., Budka 2009, Minore & Hill 1990), a regional communication society in Northern Ontario.

In a recent survey of the interdisciplinary literature on media and conflict, Schoemaker and Stre... more In a recent survey of the interdisciplinary literature on media and conflict, Schoemaker and Stremlau (2014) found that most existing studies display Western-centric biases, normative assumptions and unsubstantiated claims about the impact of media in conflict situations. With their ethnographic methods and ground-up theorising, anthropologists are therefore well placed to make a strong contribution to the advancement of this area of scholarship. Although a growing number of anthropologists have studied media in conflict and post-conflict contexts – working on diverse topics such as media representations, cyberwar, internet activism, social protest, video-making, or radio dramas – so far they have done so in relative isolation from one another. The result is a fragmentation of the field and a dissipation of efforts. The aim of this workshop is to remedy this situation by bringing together media anthropologists and other media and communication scholars working on the complex relationship between media and conflict.
