like i'm literally trying to put this as simply as humanly possible. the way that you are taught to view what it means to be a canadian or american or brit or whatever, the idea of Who you are, has built into it that by being From There you are fundamentally different or better or more Real than the rest of the world, and this is conveyed to you both overtly and subtly from an extremely young age, sometimes passively and sometimes directly, and you are taught these basic assumptions about the world, they become part of the way you navigate the world before you really have the words to explain or describe it. and i'm telling you that people born in the global south are typically not told these things, not conveyed this about ourselves from childhood, this is not something we are taught. the assumption, from an extremely young age, is that the world is full of "real people" and "real countries", whatever that means. there are more specific sectarian or communalist things taught to us depending on where we live and other aspects of the material conditions we are born into, but the basic assumption of "my country is the only real country in the world" and "only people born in my country are real people" is not universal, you did not enter this life thinking that way, it is something ingrained in you. and you can choose to unlearn that, or you can choose not to, but if you whine on the internet about people from the developing world being mean to you because you are insisting on your right to not view us as human beings i think you are too far gone

handweavers

the worst thing that will happen to you for expressing western chauvinistic ignorance is to get bullied by people from the rest of the world online. the worst thing that happens to us because you have this ideology is that we, Real People all over this whole world, get killed en masse, and then you go online and complain about having to see that too. i don't even know what to say anymore

How to Backup your Tumblr

fiction-is-not-reality

I was just semi-complaining that I was still looking for a decent way to backup my +6k posts without having to use paid services or even just wordpress (which has an import from tumblr tool that asks for permission to access your blog and also make posts), when I decided to actually put some effort into my google search.

Results were positive: I have successfully backed up my blog

*By which I mean: everything that I have ever posted
Not included: drafts, queue, likes, followers, following, comments, notes, chat.

I followed this method (word by word), and now have a 450 MB folder on my computer with the name of my blog on it containing:

1. Folder “Archive” (contains .html files listed by month)
2. Folder “Media” (contains gifs and images, mine has +1k files in it; might contain also audios but I have no way of confirming that because I’ve never reblogged an audio post from this blog)
3. Folder “Posts” (contains single .html files, each one a post; I have +4k files in it)
4. Folder “Theme” (contains only my avatar, but it might be a matter of if you have personalized themes or not)
5. .html file “Index” (by opening it it will give you the archive of your blog organized by month; clicking on a month will open up the archive for that month, and you’ll be able to read all the posts for that month as if you were on your blog**, except sans your theme graphic, with each page containing 50 posts)

**I can see gifs, links, embedded videos, tags, number of notes (but I can’t open up the notes, clearly), text is also correctly formatted.

So yeah, in case anyone wants a very quick way to back up their blog, it took me less than 10 minutes.

P.S. I didn’t have any issue, but to be on the safe side always check for spyware and virus threats before and after downloading anything.

thepirateking

this is actually really useful if you have an art blog full of years of work that you otherwise no longer have access to the original files. A lot of the art I have in the early days of my art blog are in that boat. I did this process JUST for that reason and I was pretty astonished at just how many pieces of media it backs up! (literally all of it) Drawings I didn’t even realize were sitting in my archive due to having been posted to text posts or undercuts, or untagged for years! It’s worth it if just for that, even if tumblr isn’t shutting down or deleting your blog.

oricalcon

For those of you wondering: This includes your posts in all forms, and your reblogs, as well as the number of notes they got. Furthermore, it’s implemented in a way that archives your posts by month in an index.html file that can be used while offline. You can search your tags per month by simply using ctrl+f. The only thing it doesn’t do is save the images that are in the reblogs, and it cannot save videos.

image

I just did this and it took less than ten minutes, and while I can say I would not have much difficulty if it had more obtuse instructions, the format of the steps is extremely simple and easy to follow for people who may be intimidated with this method.

spinnerprincess kresnikclan
fyi if you want this to go very very fast and more want a record of your text than anything else, the flag “-k” at the command line section will refrain from downloading images when backing up, which is mainly what would make it take a long time to do a backup + make said backup huge. it makes the program link to the image files instead of downloading them
#open “tumblr_backup.md” in notepad or something if you vaguely know how command line flags work and there are more of them #neat tool.

I use TumbleThree! I haven’t found it to be as easy to look up which images go to which posts, but it WILL download all the content. It’s been easier for me to figure out than the other methods and it’s better than nothing.

A warning, tho. My download, when I did this, ended up being 26gb in a single fucking zip file . There was nothing to indicate how big that file was going to be before I started the download, or how long it would take, and no option to pick and choose what you wanted to download. I just got the lot - every picture, every gif, every video or media file, every chat, everything, as many times as I reblogged them. For not windows users, and also everyone, Tumblr has a native backup function. Settings–>click on your blog you want to backup–>scroll all the way down, there’s an “Export” option. Done. May take awhile to get all your shit for download, but leaving the page doesn’t stop the process, and you don’t have to fiddle with command line stuff like in the above link (though shout out to the contributors for it!)

This actually worked (after some big trial and error) on my Mac! I’ve got my blog saved now and a bunch of the fan art blogs. What a relief!
#ill give instructions tomorrow #just make sure you have the latest python2 installed #and my mac required something else that makes python work better #once i got those it was easy

redheadgleek

Here’s a few additions to the process.

I use an older Macbook Pro, so I had to download Python and install it on my computer. The first time I did this, I just followed the link to Python that the instructions above posted and downloaded/installed, and it took several hours with several error messages to download my blog. After a little bit of research, I discovered that it probably because I didn’t have everything installed properly. So I then followed the instructions here to install Python and Homebrew through Terminal, which made the process much faster (installing Homebrew was terrifying as all of a sudden my computer seemed possessed by a demon spitting out words I didn’t understand, but it calmed down).

I know next to nothing about Python, so I couldn’t figure out how to open/use any of the applications once I installed Python, so I did everything through Terminal which worked just fine for me (Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal).

Somebody created a How-To Guide for Mac here and another person asked about using it on a Mac, so I followed those instructions. In fact, I moved “bbolli-tumblr-utils” files to Documents, renamed it TUMBLRARCHIVE, and just copied the location from the last comment on the second link.

There are options that you can add to the program when it downloads (just insert it with a space between the “python tumblr_backup.py” part and your blogname. I highly suggest -D, as it creates a folder for each post, with the HTML index and the media files so everything stays nicely arranged. I also did -l which downloads your likes as well.

I have not tried to download videos and audio yet- that’s going to be the next project.

These are BIG downloads. I have 17K posts (and 14K likes) and it takes 23B on my hard drive. I’ll be moving it to an external drive once I’ve gone through everything.

reblogging again to confirm it works well. make sure to wait till the command line finishes executing (dont be impatient like me basically) because even when the posts are saved, the program still runs to generate the index page.

So I was going to tag-talk, but I feel like people who follow me might want to see the TYPE of output they can expect from both versions of backup
#tumblr #tumblr backup #i suspected the python script would have a better output #just a feeling i got by looking at the two projects #if you have a mac scroll up a bit in the reblog comments #one user gave very clear instructions on how to use the python script in a mac #taperwolf is the user you’re looking for

The instructions linked don’t really help those of using MAC OSX or higher, so if anyone knows how to do this ^^^^ by way of a MAC please reblog with how you did it please.

Just used this, surprisingly quick. Note that it doesn’t save anything behind a cut.

I have just tried this with my sideblog and it worked like a charm! Currently backing up the main blog.

I have 8 sideblogs plus my main and I successfully saved all 8 of them using this method and it only took me a day. This thing is legit

Btw much as I love to make fun of twitter and reddit's business decisions, I have 0% trust in tumblr's management to not go a similar route so this is your gentle reminder that you should regularly go to your blog settings to export your blog. That's a fancy way of saying you can download a backup of your blog so if everything goes down you'll still have a backup of your posts & convos.

It's gonna come as a surprise to most of you, but if you don't want to do that for whatever reason you're allowed to not reblog this post. I'm not holding a gun to your head here I'm just trying to spread the word for people who do want a backup of their stuff.

Also, made this guide for backup Tumblr blogs (ft. export blog method, and python 3 script method):

i have a genuine question so after you export your blog....what do you do with the file like. thats hte part im not getting the export part i get it but you export it and than what (its mostly bc i dont have a lot of storage to be able to just....keep a huge file on my computer and do nothing with it)
