let's talk about Dess Holiday a little.

for all these stories telling us how awesome and cool she was...

image

...she wasn't really all that popular?

i mean, Dess has been gone for years and nobody in Hometown ever mentions her. the older teens/young adults, who should be her peers, only talks to Kris about Asriel.

You'd think they're avoiding the topic of Dess for Kris' sake, but truthfully, i don't see Pizzapants and Bratty as all that tactful.

instead, i think they were just never friends with Dess, and paid little attention to her even when she was around.

i think Dess was in fact rather lonely. and we only came to think of her as this cool, badass rebel girl because of how Noelle and Kris saw her.

with Noelle, i suppose Dess maintained till the very end an image of a loving, protective big sister. Noelle remembers Dess helping her win every snow angel contest, and whacking Kris over their head when they went too far with pranks, and promising to take her to a city of shining lights.

but i don't think that's the full story of their sisterhood. rather, i believe Dess had kept her bitterer, more complicated feelings for Noelle hidden, and this was where Kris came in.

but first, let's take a look at what Dess was like.

image

she was messy and unfocused. she was rowdy and dirty. Susie reminds Gerson of her, and Susie is aggressive, rude, implied to struggle with formal schooling, and very much ostracized by her peers.

so Dess' main friend group was like...her own sister, the boy living next door, and the neighbor boy's gremlin younger sibling.

and two of these people are just. Perfect. Noelle, sweet, polite and well-behaved, cast as the Angel that Hometowners literally worship. Asriel, so academically and socially successful. they are the faces of the Holidays and Dreemurrs, respectively, golden children of the town. they shine so bright that their siblings live under their shadows.

now, i think Asriel genuinely liked Dess, and their closeness wasn't just for show or anything.

but that doesn't mean proximity and the fact that their parents knew each other well didn't factor into this friendship. i think Dess was very aware of how out of her league Asriel was, even if she was the mayor's daughter.

i think she wasn't sure if Asriel would still be her friend if they weren't neighbors.

and then, there was Kris.

Kris was Just Like Her. just like Dess, they were weird, unruly, an outsider. just like Dess, they have a vastly more popular and easily likeable sibling.

and i think Dess leaned on Kris as Kris leaned on Dess. the bitterness Dess couldn't exactly show Noelle? she showed to Kris. the loneliness and insecurity she couldn't tell Asriel? she let it slipped with Kris. because Kris was the only one who could possibly understand her.

well, Kris and someone else. until that someone else is gone.

image

two of the dark worlds seem like attempts to relive the time when Gerson was alive and her teacher.

i do wonder if Gerson's passing was shortly before Dess' disappearance. if the loss of someone so important to her had shaken her and prompted her to do something drastic.

and I think Kris was the only witness to what happened to her.

Happy disabled pride month to the undiagnosed. To those with no idea what it could be. To those who are pretty sure they know, but can't be certain yet. To those whose doctors are trying their best, and to those whose doctors aren't. To those with test results, and those without. To those whose prognosis isn't looking good. To those scared by the course of their symptoms, and with no idea what's going to happen next. Living undiagnosed is hard, and I wish you all luck.

Friend group chats are fun. Today one of my friends, who keeps pet crayfish, found babies in a tank that was supposed to be a males only. No choice but to empty out the whole tank to fish out the babies of unknowable origins. But lo and behold, there was a culprit: one teeny tiny little female had somehow escaped containment, evidently specifically going out of her way to break into this all male tank to get railed by like 15 males twice her size. Possibly completely different breed, too. Monsterfucker supreme.

So for a good solid hour or so, the whole group chat was focused on. slutshaming this one specific little crustacean. With like 300 babies.

FEAST MY PRETTIES

On the Zeus angst

Wyd when you become the one thing you were raised to be better than and destroy?

Also fun fact Young Zeus' hair is meant to be messier and his outfit is slightly torn while Present Zeus is all nice looking because Young Zeus actually did shit. He and his siblings are a family. They suffered together and they fought together.

Present Zeus doesnt do anything himself but punishment

it makes me so ANGRY when people say stuff like "the amalgamates would be better off dead". no!!! no they wouldn't!!!! they're DISABLED PEOPLE you morons! that's the exact same strain of thought that ends up in doctors killing disabled patients because they "have no quality of life"! just because they possibly have chronic pain and need care in their daily lives doesn't mean they would be better off DEAD holy shit

undertalethingems answered:

Yeah, those are the bad implications I was alluding to. even though these are fictional characters in question, people’s attitudes towards them speaks to how they feel about real disabled folks, and it’s not good.

Anonymous said to undertalethingems: Addition to your thing: There are monsters who share bodies as well, like the one in deltarune (i forget their names, the three headed one). So if you want to say the amalgamations have a lesser life because they share a body is kind of just. Wrong, since theres already monsters like that. Are their lives lesser too or does it just apply to the Amalgamations because it fits your little accusations about Alphys not deserving forgiveness and a life?

Ah, I don’t know if I’d include Clover in consideration here just because Deltarune is a different world, but there are monsters in Undertale with multiple faces, or who can act as a hivemind, and it’s possible there are true multi-headed monsters we just don’t see. It’s something the amalgamates and their families would have to adapt to, but that doesn’t mean they can’t or won’t, or that it’ll even be hard for them to do so. Monster society is probably generally a lot more accepting of people being strange than ours is. >>

Anonymous said to undertalethingems: I find it interesting that characters like Alphys and Asgore get way too many people hating on them meanwhile characters who have also done/attempted bad things and/or made bad decisions (while not being inherently a bad monster) get a free pass. Asriel/Flowey, Undyne, and Toriel all did some questionable things but they’re the fan favorites. Every character has a flaw, and the whole game pushes forgiveness and kindness. People seem to forget that when it comes to the characters they dislike.

Anonymous said to undertalethingems: I don’t get why everyone targets just Alphys or just Asgore. theirs flaws in so many characters. Toriel abandoned her whole kingdom but everyone out here never talking about that. No one wants to talk about the characters they like having flaws, or whatever. They think ‘oh because i like them they’re so redeemable’ or 'i hate them it doesn’t matter what they went through they suck’. These characters have flaws. That’s what makes them so great. They’re relatable.

Yeah, agreed with both of you–none of these characters are perfect, and that’s what makes them feel so real. it’s one of the best things about Undertale’s writing, to not only have so many diverse characters, but each with understandable motivations such that even the soulless flower who’s tormented you the whole game can be forgiven. It’s why I still have so much fun writing them, and don’t like seeing them reduced to only their best or worst qualities. It’s a disservice to what makes them interesting, and it’s frankly disappointing -_-;;

ok well now im neutral route thinking again. the horrors

chromatasia

hey you ever think about how we don’t actually know how long it was that the two were fighting. flowey says that he could keep the two of them there for as long as he liked, but does time move differently there? was clover’s body left to rot without a soul on top of the apartment building, while their soul was trapped fighting against flowey? places head on chin :)c

radioroxx

I DO. I DO THINK ABOUT THIS ALL THE TIME. just their body still there…. surrounded by dust… i wonder if they’d ever been found. poor starlo, ceroba (assuming an ending where you dont kill them) likely waiting back in the dunes to hear from martlet, about how clover made it to asgore. about how they crossed the barrier and are heading home safely. but martlet never comes back.

do you think about also how long they’ve been in this loop in general? flowey mentions being in the hundreds. hundreds of resets, hundreds of cycles and no way to know how many of them probably ended up in that same place. that same fight, and his same speech. im thinking its probably for the best that clover doesn’t remember the loops… after all that

especially since floweys fight is DESIGNED to scare them. designed to fuck with their head. i talked about it a little in a rb but flowey isnt actually trying to kill clover. he doesnt let them die. everytime they do, he forces their soul back together - no save points, no files. he forces them not to die. what he’s trying to do instead is exhaust them. wear them so thin that they give up and let flowey absorb their soul. all of this and clover doesnt even get the chance to fight back, flowey is toying with them. making the spooky scary faces, distorting the entire view, screwing up all your battle options (its also why i like to think we get the third person messages in this fight. “clover would like to cry” etc, its because flowey is trying to mess with them. teasing, basically). NOT ONLY THAT, BUT GUILTING THEM BY BRINGING UP THE PEOPLE THEY KILLED. TAUNTING THEM WITH HAUNTED VERSIONS OF THOSE MONSTERS THEY KILLED. and then of course the memory with martlet… the false hope…

its all all so horrible i just wanna give clover a hug im so sick. im so insane about them

chromatasia

THIS FIGHT MAKES ME SO UNWELL AAAUFUDJCJDJCJDJ

i wonder just how deeply clover was bothered by. everything. obviously they were bothered by it (how COULDNT they be) but we can’t even see their face because they have no face. they have no eyes to cry with. the have no mouth to scream with. they’re just. a soul. and maybe that’s all flowey saw them as in this (in his eyes) failed run

radioroxx

YES. YES. EXACTLYY

and of course theres all these subtle hints to how theyre doing… when the only actions theyre really able to take are screaming, crying, begging, weeping, decaying, and the like. its an illusion of a fair fight where flowey has all control, enough to put him in a position where he feels oh so comfortable enough to be playful about it.

and thats even WORSE when you consider clover being reduced to just their soul. theyre nothing but their own will to live which flowey is trying so hard to break. it must be all the more terrifying i would think, to feel so afraid and desperate but have no way to express those feelings :(

chromatasia

the power dynamic in the fight is. so interesting. because it’s so clear that if flowey really wanted he probably could just force clover to give up. but that wouldn’t be fun for him, and at this point all he is looking for is something fun, something new.

i was also thinking with flowey saying “if you remember this, make better decisions” (not verbatim but. that’s the gist) is that there is a chance that clover WILL remember. they don’t, but the player does.

but what if clover did remember? what if they remembered that fight? what if it was the cause of their animosity towards flowey in the geno route :) after all, they want justice. who’s to say they don’t want justice for themself, too?

radioroxx

GAH THE THOUGHT OF CLOVER REMEMBERING THE RESETS…. INSANE ABOUT THAT TOO MAYBE ILL HAVE TO BRAINSTORM IT AT SOME POINT WHO KNOWS…. FUCK!! also yes so agree pls clover get that self justice for once lord knows you deserve it. maybe dont kill everyone tho. yeah.

okay but also yes floweys motivations are so interesting me. this ive also talked about before… briefly, but. really at the end of the day it seems like he’s doing all this, so so much, for nothing. if anything, he’s making his final goal harder to reach. whats the point of fighting clover for their soul in the neutral route if he knows itll never work? whats the point of letting them reach ceroba in pacifist if he knows where itll lead them? whats the point of reseting the entire goddamn game just because it didnt END the way he wanted it to? its a waste of time, is what it is. and yet…

maybe it is just because he wasnt ready to say his goodbyes, maybe its because he did have fun with clover and doesnt want to let that go. so he lets them take their neutral route, over and over and over again, just so he can keep having fun. at least, thats what i think.

chromatasia

YOU CANT JUST HIT ME WITH THAT LAST PARAGRAPH AND EXPECT ME TO BE NORMAL. AAAAAAAAAAA

does flowey see clover as his best friend? yes! does he decide that the best course of action is to torment them for near eternity because it gives him the break from the loneliness that comes with soulless immortality? also yes!
