After their victory over the Persians in the first half of the fifth century BC, the Greeks adopt... more After their victory over the Persians in the first half of the fifth century BC, the Greeks adopted a hellenocentric world view and invented the notion of the barbarian, the non-Hellene, as the “Other”. The Greek-barbarian antithesis became a popular rhetorical topos in tragedy. The three tragedians used various effects in representing foreign characters on stage. This article gives emphasis on the barbarian costume used in Greek tragedy. It particularly analyzes two exotic garments which were used as visual markers to fix a theatrical costume as oriental: the first one was the anaxyrides (‘trousers’) and the second one was the richly decorated cheiridotos (‘sleeved’) chiton. In the beginning, the fitted wrist-length sleeves, which were utterly foreign to the Greek dress system, had the semiotic power to suggest a barbarian. But for the sake of practicality —they kept the forearms of actors warm and disguised when they played female roles— they became a feature of every costume, losing their foreign associations. For this reason, other pieces of costume were used to suggest foreign people on stage, like the floppy hat (kidaris), the Thracian zeira etc., while non-Greek motifs, like dots, circles, zig-zag, adorned the fabric of the costume to make it ethnically distinctive.

This article proposes and describes an educational scenario for 4th, 7th and 10th grade school hi... more This article proposes and describes an educational scenario for 4th, 7th and 10th grade school history. The main goal of this scenario is to help students understand the historical dimension of the phenomenon of the pandemic and to develop critical thinking towards it, in order to enhance their mental resilience. The main historical character of this scenario is Myrtis. The use of drama game techniques is proposed as the main teaching method for the scenario's implementation. The title of the educational scenario is the following: «Travelling with Myrtis from the plague of Ancient Athens to the pandemic of covid-19». In the scenario, students travel to the plague of Ancient Athens through an imaginary journey to the past with Myrtis. After traveling through the pandemics of different historical periods (plague, smallpox, cholera), they arrive at their experience of the pandemic in the present. The design was based on the theories of the educational scenario and theatre pedagogy.

The essays collected in "Performing Space" are intent on moving forward the discussion about the ... more The essays collected in "Performing Space" are intent on moving forward the discussion about the relevance and significance of the interrelation between performance and space. Besides, in virtue of the fact that the contributors to the volume have different disciplinary or artistic backgrounds, this collection is aimed to initiate an interdisciplinary examination of performance and space, and to foster a mutually enlightening dialogue among areas as diverse as philosophy, architecture, performance theory and practice, theatre studies, anthropology, literary theory and pedagogy. "Performing Space" establishes an international forum, where the provenance, the conceptuality and the contemporary potentialities of performance are discussed and brought to bear on the built environment, both past and present. The essays in the first section of Performing Space, “Performance, Theory, Space”, endeavour to reflect on theoretical and epistemological issues that concern the status and conditions of artistic performance, space or both, by having recourse to writings by Friedrich Nietzsche, Jacques Derrida, Gilles Deleuze, Hannah Arendt and Jacques Rancière, among others. The second section, “Performing Space: Applied”, comprises essays focusing on case studies of actual performances and evaluating the outcome of specific performative events. The essays in question acknowledge and analyse the significance of particular spaces and their evident impact on the corresponding performances.
An den Proskenien der meisten hellenistischen Theater lassen sich Pinakesverschlüsse an den Inter... more An den Proskenien der meisten hellenistischen Theater lassen sich Pinakesverschlüsse an den Interkolumnien nachweisen. Von ihnen zeugen verschiedenartige Befestigungsvorrichtungen, die an der Schwelle des Proskenions, an der Unterseite von dessen Architrav sowie an dessen Stützen zu erkennen sind. In diesem Sinne bildeten die drei erwähnten Architekturglieder der Proskenionfront einen stützenden architektonischen Rahmen für die Pinakes. Darüber hinaus konnten letztere u.U. mit einem Holzrahmen versehen sein, der nach Ehlichs Vorstellung entweder einfach gestaltet war, wenn die Pinakes hinter den Proskenionstützen saßen, oder auf der Vorderseite bemalt und profiliert war, wenn die Pinakes zwischen den Interkolumnien des Proskenions aufgehängt wurden und damit voll sichtbar waren 1 . Die Kombination hölzerner bzw. architektonischer Umrahmung mit den entsprechenden Einarbeitungen hatte dazu beigetragen, daß die Pinakes nicht aus ihrer Verankerung fallen konnten. Die Anwendung von Holzrahmen für die Pinakes läßt sich sowohl epigraphisch als auch archäologisch nachweisen. Erinnert sei hier an die delische Bauabrechnung von 274 v. Chr., nach welcher die alten Pinakes der "Paraskenien" des Theaters von Delos mit Rahmen versehen waren 2 . Einen archäologischen Anhaltspunkt bietet in diesem Zusammenhang das Theater von Sikyon. Dem älteren 1 EHLICH (1954) 64f. mit Abb. 21. Nach Moretti hingegen waren die Pinakes des Proskenions selten mit einem Holzrahmen versehen, da die Ränder der hölzernen Pinakes in den meisten Fällen in Berührung mit den Architekturgliedern des Proskenions kamen: MORETTI (1997) 17. -Aufhängbare Pinakes konnten vermutlich in den Interkolumnien eines Vollsäulenproskenions aufgestellt werden, s. dazu u. S. 135. 2 IG XI², 199 A, Z. 94-95, s. o. S. 47 mit Anm. 279. Proskenion aus Poros (erste Hälfte des 3. Jhs. v. Chr.) 3 ist zu entnehmen, daß die Pfosten der Pinakesumrahmungen in rechteckige, paarweise angeordnete Einlassungen auf der Schwelle der Frontarchitektur eingezapft waren (Abb. 98, 99) 4 . Zwischen diesen doppelten Einlassungen, die unterschiedlich groß waren, wurde jeweils ein ionischer Halbsäulen-Pfeiler aufgestellt. Etwa in der Mitte des Jochs finden sich auch kleinere, unregelmässige Zapfenlöcher, die paarweise angeordnet sind. In diese wurden möglicherweise Angeln eingesetzt, die dem Holzrahmen des Pinax mehr Halt gaben 5 . Angellöcher zur Befestigung der Pinakes in den Interkolumnien der Proskenionfront sind auch am Stylobat des Proskenions von Morgantina (3. Jh. v. Chr.?) 6 zu erkennen. Allerdings befinden sie sich hier nicht in der Mitte jedes Interkolumniums sondern an seinen Enden (Abb. 100) 7 . Im Gegensatz dazu weisen die Stylobatplatten der hellenistischen Proskenien von Isthmia (erstes Viertel des 3. Jhs. v. Chr.) 8 und Oiniadai (erste Hälfte des 3. Jhs. v. Chr.) 9 Angellöcher nur auf der jeweils äußeren Seite des Interkolumniums auf 10 . Das bedeutet, daß das Angelloch westlich der Mitteltür des Proskenions auf der Ostseite jeder Interkolumniumsplatte liegt, östlich der Mitteltür hingegen auf der Westseite. Die Angellöcher auf dem Stylobat der dritten Bauphase des Skenengebäudes von Isthmia aus Kalkstein sind rechteckig (Abb. 101) 11 , während jene auf dem Stylobat von Oiniadai aus gleichem 3 BULLE (1928) 199; FIECHTER, Sikyon, 32; TGR II, 291 (Isler). 4 BULLE (1928) 197; FIECHTER, Sikyon, 13f.; GEBHARD (1973) 57 Anm. 45. Die Maße der Balken des Rahmens ergeben sich aus den Maßen der Einlassungen. Nach Bulle ebd. waren diese Einlassungen 0,20 -0,30 m lang, 0,10 -0,20 m breit und 0,80 -0,85 m tief. Nach Brownson -Young waren sie 0,23 -0,35 m lang und 0,13 -0,18 m breit: BROWNSON -YOUNG (1893) 408. Nach Fiechter ebd. 13 hatten sie eine Größe von durchschnittlich 0,12 m × 0,28 m und eine Tiefe von 0,12 -0,15 m. Der größere Abstand zwischen zwei solchen Einlassungen variierte zwischen 0,56 und 0,75 m, der kleinere zwischen 0,20 und 0,26 m. 5 Die Jochlänge betrug 1,47 m. Nur das Mittelinterkolumnium, in welchem eine zweiflügelige Tür aufgestellt war, war mit 2,40 m wesentlich länger. Die kleinen Einlassungen waren 0,05 -0,08 m × 0,10 -0,16 m × 0,09 m groß: FOSSUM (1905) 268; BULLE 197. Nach Fiechter wiesen diese kleinen Löcher auf bewegliche Flügel hin: FIECHTER, Sikyon, 13f. 28. 6 STILLWELL (1964/65) Taf. 54, Abb. 7. Die Chronologie dieses Theaters ist in der Forschung umstritten. Nach Mitens wird die erste Bauphase, die kein permanentes Bühnenhaus besaß, ins 4. Jh. v. Chr. datiert, die zweite an das Ende des 4. Jhs. oder den Anfang des 3. Jhs. v. Chr., während die dritte nicht genau datierbar ist: MITENS (1988) 107f. Allen datiert das hellenistische Bühnengebäude mit seiner Proskenionarchitektur ins erste Viertel des 3. Die Länge der Angellöcher betrug 0,105 -0,13 m, die Breite 0,07 -0,75 m und die Tiefe 0,03 m, GEBHARD (1973) 53. Nach Gebhard bestand die Schwelle des Proskenions der zweiten Bauphase von Anfang des 2. Jhs. v. Chr.) 19 und Amphiareion in Oropos (zwischen 171 -146 v. Chr.) 20 , die allerdings in den entsprechenden Publikationen nur teilweise erwähnt werden. Ähnliche rechteckige Einschnitte für den Pinaxverschluß sind auch auf zwei Stylobatplatten des hellenistischen Proskenions von Sparta (unter Nabis ? [207 -192 v. Chr.]) zu erkennen (Abb. 109) 21 . Darüber hinaus fand Powell im Zuge der Ausgrabungen des Theaters von Oiniadai am Beginn des 20. Jhs. einen großen Teil der Stylobatplatten in situ und stellte fest, daß sämtliche Platten rückwärts ihrer Länge nach mit rechteckigen Einschnitten versehen waren (Abb. 110) 22 . Davon sind gegenwärtig nur fünf Stylobatfragmente erhalten 23 . Aus den bereits erwähnten Beispielen sowie aus jenen, die gleich folgen werden, läßt sich schließen, daß die Einarbeitungen am Stylobat des hellenistischen Proskenions von Theater zu Theater verschieden waren und nicht, wie Gebhard meint, einer typologischen Entwicklung unterlagen. Es ist vielmehr wahrscheinlich, daß die Art der Befestigungsvorrichtungen für die Kulissenmalerei von den verschiedenen Architekten individuell verschieden gestaltet wurde. So sehen wir beispielsweise, daß das Theater des Apollo Erethymios in Ialysos (erste Hälfte des 3. Jhs. v. Chr. oder etwas früher) 24 keinen Einschnitt auf der Schwelle seines Proskenions aufweist, im Gegensatz zu beispielsweise der zeitgenössischen Proskenionarchitektur des Theaters von Oiniadai. Die drei Porosblöcke des Stylobats, die leider verlorengegangen sind, weisen in einem Abstand von 1 m zwei eingelassene kleine Marmorplatten mit je einem Zapfenloch in der Mitte auf, die vermutlich zur Anbringung von Pinakes bestimmt waren (Abb. 111, 112) 25 . Der Nachfolgerbau aus Stein, der gegenüber dem älteren Theater um 11º nach Westen gedreht war, besaß kein steinernes Proskenion, sondern eine hölzerne Rollskene.
Performing Space is an international annual event that includes a conference and a workshop, whos... more Performing Space is an international annual event that includes a conference and a workshop, whose purpose is to present and promote, in a coherent way, a number of studies and works on performance and space, and to offer a framework in which to experiment with performance in significant spaces in the history of the development of the built environment.
The University of the Peloponnese, through the Department of Theatre of the University of the Peloponnese, hosted Performing Space 2022 - Epidaurus, in Nafplio, Greece. The first edition of the event featured contributions from 27 academics, practitioners and students from Greece, Spain, Italy, UK and Germany.

, focusing on special needs and sleep apnea, and has served for many years as General Supervisor ... more , focusing on special needs and sleep apnea, and has served for many years as General Supervisor of Studies for the Postgraduate Program in Museum Studies at the University of Athens. He has authored four books and numerous publications in international journals, and presented at European conferences on Orthodontics, Archaeology-Museology-Reconstruction, and Biopathology. His diverse research includes studies on the craniofacial complex of ancient and modern Greeks. Notably, he reconstructed the faces of Avgi, a Mesolithic woman from 7000 BC, and Myrtis, an eleven-year-old victim of the plague in Athens in 430 BC. Myrtis was hastily buried in a mass grave in the Kerameikos cemetery. In 1994-95, her skull revealed genes that matched those of a bacterium called Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi, suggesting that the pathogening factor responsible for the plague of Athens was the typhoid fever. Moreover, thanks to the excellent preservation of Myrtis' skull, Professor Papagrigorakis and his team reconstructed her face, turning her into a cultural phenomenon-UN ambassador, "Friend of the Millennium", featured in history books, stamps, collectible coins and various artistic media. Myrtis continues to be a subject of research, theatrical performances and technological applications, transcending time as a symbol of the ancient epidemic.
