The aircraft air data system is used for estimating vital flight parameters for correct and safe ... more The aircraft air data system is used for estimating vital flight parameters for correct and safe aircraft operations. One of the main components in this system is the Pitot tube sensor which is responsible for measuring the total pressure and in conjunction with the static pressure port estimates parameters like altitude, air speed, vertical speed and Mach number. The Pitot tube is prone to failure because of external adverse atmospheric conditions. The current research aims to develop a solution to the aircraft loss of control caused by unreliable and/or faulty airspeed measurements by developing an air data system tolerant to the Pitot sensor failure based on extra sensor measurements and an estimation algorithm that uses a digital twin aircraft dynamic model as a virtual sensor.

Para desarrollar el modelo de la aeronave, se siguieron dos pasos: En el primero se obtuvieron las ecuaciones dinámicas que rigen el comportamiento de la aeronave en términos de coeficientes aerodinámicos que dependen de las características de la aeronave en particular. En el segundo paso se encontró el valor de estos parámetros utilizando un filtro extendido de Kalman.

This article presents theoretical and computational studies with Computational Fluids Dynamics (C... more This article presents theoretical and computational studies with Computational Fluids Dynamics (CFD) tools of an Underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), required to obtain reliable visual information, used for surveillance and maintenance of ship shells and underwater structures of Colombian port facilities. The thrust force is analyzed at the operational conditions by using CFD tools (FLUENT™, CFX™, COSMOSFLOW™) and the information about forces, torques and power of the vehicle’s thrusters is obtained. The commercial propellers were modeled by using a reverse engineering process with a 3D scanner and Computer Aided Design (CAD) software (RAPIDFORM™). The results obtained with the CFD package allowed to evaluate several operating scenarios of the vehicle that are used for feedback purposes in the design process of the ROV before it be manufactured.

An alternative for the steady-level flight control on an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is the use... more An alternative for the steady-level flight control on an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is the use of decentralized multi-loop PID controllers for each controlled variable. PIDs are linear structured low order controllers which are not so easy to tune in the presence of complex dynamics such as multivariable, non-minimum phase, oscillatory and high-order plants; and the use of conventional design techniques based on linearized models usually does not end in satisfactory results. In this work a design scheme based on iterative feedback tuning (IFT) for the multivariable nonlinear model of the Condor Andino UAV (Andean Condor UAV) is addressed. The method proposes the optimization of a quadratic performance target function using the closed loop response obtained from simulations. In this case the characteristics of the model are not used directly in the controller tuning process, but in simulations and in some other numeric manipulations. The optimization process is made using a modified version of the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. The simulation results show that a set of controller parameters can be found such that the target function has a local minimum.Copyright © 2010 by ASME

Microgrids (MG) treat local energy supply issues effectively and from a point of view of the dist... more Microgrids (MG) treat local energy supply issues effectively and from a point of view of the distribution grid, may be a power supply or virtual load. Despite holding a myriad of benefits, MGs also bear a set of challenges, including a higher fault rate. Currently, many articles focus on control techniques; however, little has been written about the techniques of control, hierarchical control, and fault-tolerant control (FTC) applied to MGs, which is the motive of this bibliographic revision on control systems. A brief comparison of the different approaches in the field of present-day research is carried out primarily addressing hierarchical control and fault tolerance. The objective of this investigation is to attract the interest of researchers to the field of control and fault tolerance applied to MGs, such as: modeling, testbed, benchmark systems, control and hierarchical control strategies, fault diagnosis and FTC.

This paper presents a new hybrid strategy which allows the dynamic identification of AC/DC microg... more This paper presents a new hybrid strategy which allows the dynamic identification of AC/DC microgrids (MG) by using algorithms such as Auto-Regressive with exogenous inputs (ARX) and Petri Nets (PN). The proposed strategy demonstrated in this study serves to obtain a dynamic model of the DC MG in isolated or connected modes. Given the non-linear nature of the system under study, the methodology divides the whole system in a bank of linearized models at different stable operating points, coordinated by a PN state machine. The bank of models obtained in state space, together with an adequate selection of models, can capture and reflect the non-linear dynamic properties of the AD/DC MGs and the different systems that it composes. The performance of the proposed algorithm has been tested using the Matlab/Simulink simulation platform.

This paper reviews aspects of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) autonomy as suggested by the Autonomo... more This paper reviews aspects of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) autonomy as suggested by the Autonomous Control Logic chart of the U.S. DoD UAV autonomy roadmap; levels of vehicle autonomy addressed through intelligent control practices and a hierarchical/intelligent control architecture are presented for UAVs. Basic modules of the control hierarchy and their enabling technologies are reviewed; of special interest, from an intelligent control perspective, are the middle and high echelons of the hierarchy. Here, mission planning, trajectory generation and vehicle navigation routines are proposed for the highest level. At the middle level, the control role is portrayed by mode transitioning, envelope protection, real-time adaptation and fault detection/control reconfiguration algorithms which are intended to safeguard the UAV's integrity in the event of component failures, extreme operating conditions or external disturbances. The UAV thus exhibits attributes of robustness and operational reliability assuring a satisfactory degree of autonomy. The control technologies are demonstrated through flight testing results.

The objective of this paper is to show the results of the practical implementation of a neural ne... more The objective of this paper is to show the results of the practical implementation of a neural network (NN) tracking controller on a single flexible link and compare its performance to that of proportional derivative (PD) and proportional integral derivative (PID) standard controllers. The NN controller is composed of an outer PD tracking loop, a singular perturbation inner loop for stabilization of the fast flexible-mode dynamics, and an NN inner loop used to feedback linearize the slow pointing dynamics. No off-line training or learning is needed for the NN. It is shown that the tracking performance of the NN controller is far better than that of the PD or PID standard controllers. An extra friction term was added in the tests to demonstrate the ability of the NN to learn unmodeled nonlinear dynamics.

Many educators complain about the poor level of the engineering students that we have in the clas... more Many educators complain about the poor level of the engineering students that we have in the classrooms nowadays. This problem is accentuated in private Latin American universities that depend economically on the tuition fees paid by students for their education in professional programs, where the admission process for the students does not include a rigorous qualification examination. Besides, in the case of engineering programs in Latin American universities many of the admitted students come with poor competences in language skills, in the fundamental basic sciences like mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology. The environment has changed, we are in the era of internet, the social networks, the convergence of all communication technologies that has widespread the access to mass communication media. The students have changed, the educators also have to change. All of this makes very challenging the task of educators in engineering programs nowadays. The purpose of the paper is to present an effective methodology for teaching professional engineering courses at a Latin American university that has been devised to address the problems mentioned before. The methodology is based on several facts recognized by the author in more that twenty years of teaching experience: first, recognize that teachers do not teach, students learn by themselves; second, recognize that the best way of learning is to “learn doing”; third, recognize that the teacher's task is to establish an environment where students can "learn doing", motivate them to learn the subject under study by showing the relevance of the topic in the discipline through real-world applications and guide students in their learning process; fourth, recognize that the evaluation is not just a way to measure whether the students acquire certain competences or not, instead, the evaluation if a essential part of the learning process, the evaluations must be a continuous process in the learning process of the students, must be oriented to essential competences on the topic of the courses taught, the evaluations must be objective and must be followed by immediate and effective feedback to the students; and fifth, recognize that in professional courses it is essential to include real cases of study where the students can “learn doing”, by practicing the methods studied in the course applying them to a real problem, involving computational tools to do so. In the paper, some results obtained by implementing this methodology in the courses of “Flight Dynamics” and “Automatic Flight Control” of the program of Aeronautical Engineering of the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana, at Medellín, Colombia, are presented.

An algorithm is shown in order to obtain a model of Distributed Generation (DG) systems for a MG. This algorithm aims to obtain a bank of models in which each model is obtained through the identification of a different point of operation. This method facilitates the identification of dynamic non-linear systems associated with MG systems. During the development of this research, a bank of models for converter systems are obtained in state space which reflect the nonlinear dynamic properties of the systems and converters that compose an AC/DC MG.
