The neighbors are produced by adding an adjusted coefficient at each iteration which enables us to find the most promising region of the search space. By consequent, a modified tabu search algorithm is applied to economic and environmental economic dispatch problems. The proposed method has achieved efficient and accurate solutions for power systems with 20, 40, 80, 120, 160 and 240 units respectively. The results of the proposed method are compared with those of an improved Hopfield neural network approach, a fuzzy logic controlled genetic algorithm, an advanced engineered-conditioning genetic approach, and an advanced Hopfield neural network approach. It is shown that the proposed method is superior in providing optimal allocation of generation units which minimizes the total fuel cost. Simulation results show that the proposed method yields better solutions when compared to the alternate techniques.

The synthesis of a mechatronic system, hereby represented by the parallel robots, envisages a balance between modelling and simulation and experiment. The structural modelling of the parallel mechanism within these robots is an essential stage of the synthesis and uses the concept of the kinematic connections. The paper outlines how a linear actuator materializes the KB(−1) and KC connections. The modelling, the simulation and the experimental analysis of a linear actuator are developed. The authors explain that using the theory of kinematic connections has the advantage of a fast and simple implementation.

All the shortcomings are cleared when using the representation of the program via a graph, where the values of the arcs are the durations of the component operations, and applying the critical path method (CPM), which mainly consists in determining a path of a maximum value between two peaks of that graph. For illustrating the algorithm and the computing program we propose an application from power engineering: a 400 kV electrical overhead line section realization. In the first part of the paper we present the application as a critical path problem. In the second part, we determine the critic path in a program graph and time reserves. In the third part, we present a representative numerical application.

Applications are numerically controlled tools or power-operated industrial panels. It will take into account the definition of the monitored volume, a study on the possible use of 2D combined systems, the choice of the scanning system and data storage of the volume, the configuration of the equipment, the setting of the software for information storage and comparison, the writing of the related program sequences, examples of operating the system and the software, and, also, testing its operational efficiency.

This SB must be properly adjusted to the EB, not only as voltage, but it must provide also the same amount of energy as the system when operating at its classically detected maximum power operating point. This proposed technical solution is more economically justified, compared to the classic one: SB+DC-DC+EB, due to the simple fact that the DC-DC converter is no longer required at all. A simple mathematical model for the current-voltage characteristics is also presented, followed by a comparison between the classic DC-DC converter-based solution and the newly proposed one, without DC-DC converter.

Metal Oxide Varistors are a very common power electronic device, applied for efficient overvoltag... more Metal Oxide Varistors are a very common power electronic device, applied for efficient overvoltage protection at any voltage level. This piece of equipment has a high non-linear current response function of the applied voltage, and, it provides a relatively high heat absorption capacity in case of accidental overvoltage pulse (shock)s. The crossing response current is clearly activated by temperature of that device, and, by consequent, overheating could be disastrous. Actual researches must be carried out both for a new more performant material as well as for new technical solutions for the design of all equipment integrating them, by studying heat extraction and heat transfer inside a new complex varistor device. Our article proposes a totally new device, used basically for low voltage applications, having a supplementary metal mass added to the body of that varistor, shaped as small disk. It actions like a heat pump immediately after the voltage pulse (shock) and as additional radiators at the end of the heating process caused by a transitory overvoltage. A CAD solution combined with a finite element model, followed by some experimental results are also presented, for confirming the performance of that newly design. By placing additional metal alloy masses inside a new varistor structure it will have a higher heat pumping and dissipation capability, in order to reduce temperature stress and all aging effects.

The exponential improvement of our electronics, telecommunication or information technologies, and the lower cost of production, allows us to solve complex challenges and bold leaps in the development of urban areas. This article proposes a solution for integrated utilities, addressing the challenges that come with large telecommunication, water, gas and electricity networks, in order to provide services at a low, reliable and sustainable price. For the future, it is expected that millions of distributed, storage and management power generation systems, but equipped with autonomous intelligence and automation to increase the economy, sustainability, reliability and security of technical-municipal networks.

The participants in this study were 89 students of technical universities participating in the Erasmus mobility. The research involved a survey based on a questionnaire centered on the educational/vocational impact, cultural impact, and the relational impact of the Erasmus mobility on the personal and professional development of students/beneficiaries. The results show that an Erasmus mobility stimulate the acquisition of a social and cultural capital, acquisitions hard to gain in an otherwise normal context of life.

A team of the Mechatronics Department coordinated the changes in the curricula, turning it congruent to the Bologna declaration. The concepts, principles and actions of defining and creating the new programme are described. The first students that are educated in accordance to the new curricula began their studies in 2005. The students' realizations obtained during the ancient curricula were used as reference points in evaluating the applied changes. The paper intends to debate in international education forum new ideas, opinions and questions regarding the academic education in the domain of mechatronics and robotics.

Due to a synergic integration of the sensorial elements, the control subsystem and the actuating subsystem, the mentioned levitation system becomes an especially recommended subject in the academic curricula for mechatronic study programmes. This paper intends to initiate the investigation of different modelling, simulation and control possibilities for a magnetic levitation system starting from a real, physical reference model.

This new orientation required the development of subsystems that differ from the common robotic components and match the new applications requisites. One of these preoccupations envisages the analysis and design of high performance actuators. The paper deals in this way with specific aspects characterizing the analysis and modelling of actuators with a serial elastic element.

Improving grippers design involves a biomechanical analysis of the human prehensile organ. The authors evaluated the complexity of both industrial and medical grippers and proposed a common design method, based on the mechatronic philosophy. The aimed upshot might be a better device, with improved functionality, a cost cutback and a more efficient design endeavour.

The parallel robot is a mechatronic system and requires to be designed in the spirit of the mechatronic philosophy. The use of a parallel robot in a given application requires a careful analysis of the structure and of the indispensable parameters. Structural synthesis of mechanisms for parallel robots is addressed in detail. This paper proposes a method of structural synthesis of the parallel robotic mechanism according to the concept of the mechatronic philosophy and of the kinematic connections. The authors offer a system for analyzing the robot performances based on the 3D CompuGauge equipment.

The functional employment of the transducer is explained. In determining the optimal geometry of the elastic element, the authors employ the parametric and feature based CAD modeling, together with the finite element analysis. This ensures flexible and interactive modifications of the geometry and the correlation with the manufacturing process. Finally, the optimal solution is translated and stored in STEP format, a system independent geometric model that is compatible with any modeling environment.
