In the 2006 Stern Review, Lord Nicholas Stern, professor at the London School of Economics, argued that we need to take “strong action now … to avoid the worst impacts of climate change” (Stern 2006). Part of this action involves rethinking and rebuilding our infrastructure systems so that they are sustainable, adaptable, and resilient. Engineers do and will play an important role in this transformation, and it is critical to understand what implications this role has for the engineering profession.
