The focus on the ideological nature of P.R.C. is justified because as a ‘purifying party’ the debates on the ideological nature of the party have played a crucial role in the process of defining party identity. In this sense, this article differentiates three main phases in the ideological evolution of the party. Finally, this analysis reinforces the notion that the ideological changes that the P.R.C. has undergone, in its constant redefinition of a neo-communist identity, are determined by its position vis-à-vis the political, historical, and cultural heritage of the Italian communist tradition embodied in the P.C.I.

However, most of the academic works focus on its initial rise, which prevents a broader analysis of the evolution of its populist discourse after they reached the Spanish government in 2020. Covering this gap, this paper argues that Podemos' populism operates as a discursive logic aimed at constructing the political by spreading antagonisms. Following the post-Marxist theories of Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe, Podemos' leaders understand politics as a cultural exercise whose essential component is a permanent redefinition of the people and anti-people categories according to context. Based on this framework, the paper develops a qualitative analysis of Podemos' discourse in the period 2014-2021. By focusing on the discursive manifestations of its main leaders, the paper shows the rhetorical turns that try to reconcile the contradictions between an initial street-level populism and a subsequent populism in power. Thus, the original people/caste antagonism is replaced by the classical left/right divide, which shows the difficult coexistence of two different approaches to populism within Podemos. Once in government, the reframing of the left/right dichotomy as democracy/fascism will lend continuity to a populist understanding of politics.

This article analyses one of the most important episodes of the ideological and cultural battle b... more This article analyses one of the most important episodes of the ideological and cultural battle between the PSI of Craxi and the PCI led by Berlinguer between the years of 1976-1978: the socialist criticism of the "Hegemony" concept by Antonio Gramsci. Such a criticism was made in the magazine Mondoperaio in 1977 and coincided with the 40th anniversary of the death of Gramsci. As will be discussed, this criticism of the Gramscian thought is linked to the processes of ideological change that were taking place within socialist and communist parties in Southern Europe at the end of the seventies. In this sense, the criticism of the Gramscian "Hegemony" concept that was made by the PSI intellectuals, denouncing its Leninist character, cannot be dissociated from the debate about the legitimacy of the communist parties to govern in western democracies during the Cold War era.

Broadly speaking, the adoption of the idea of the Italian nation by the Italian Communist Party (PCI) is commonly associated to Palmiro Togliatti's leadership after the Second World War. However, this paper argues that Gramsci and his articles in L'Ordine Nuovo over that two-year span feature prominently the concept of the Italian nation in his strategy to subvert the liberal order and help establish a communist society. This paper mainly explores the following: the Italian national question according to Gramsci vis-à-vis Marx, Engels and Lenin's positions in the matter, the southern question, and an evaluation of the Risorgimento as an «incomplete» or «betrayed» revolution.
