With this, social behaviors do not only occur in the actual social environment but also online – one of these social behaviors is trolling behavior. We argue that trolling behavior, just like any other actual social behavior, affects an individual’s emotions. Through an experiment, we compared the positive and negative affect of university students (N = 136) exposed to either hater or funny trolling. In terms of positive affect, results of independent samples t-test indicated that there was no significant difference. Interestingly, those who are exposed to hater troll exhibited more negative affect than those exposed in funny troll. Thus, the findings suggest that emotional contagion also occurs in an online environment and that trolling behavior has more impact in the experience of negative affect compared to positive affect. This is most probably because humans are more attuned in focusing more to negative stimuli (i.e., hater troll) as indicated in automatic vigilant hypothesis. The present study suggests that emotions can also be manipulated in the virtual social environment.
