Leah’s compliment dragged a big smile out of Effie. “Oh, thanks, you’re very sweet,” she said happily, “but I won’t lie, the schoolwork is very hard. Sometimes I work until morning.” She had to work twice as hard as any other student because otherwise, she risked losing her scholarship.

She tried to stay out of the way while Leah pulled the blinds. “Do you need me to go?” she asked politely, “I don’t want to be a bother, if you have to close the shop.”
