🇺🇸max mobility/permobil smart drive speed control dial wheelchair part recall EXPANSION, with MORE complaints and MORE serious injuries reported🇺🇸
think you have read this recall post before? well have I got news for you, this is a new recall, expanding on their own previous recall, because max mobility/permobil fucked up REAL BAD
december 2024 through january 2025, max mobility/permobil announced and facilitated a recall of a broken part that does not control its wheelchair power assist device how it should, after many hundreds of complaints.
the remedy was to get shipped a fixed, safe part. easy, right? well as of april 2025, they have a new announcement: whoopsie!
Max Mobility/Permobil has expanded the recall of the Speed Control Dial, a wired control option for the SmartDrive MX2+ Power Assist Device due to safety and performance concerns. The recall was originally initiated on December 20, 2024, and has been expanded to address recalled product that may have been inadvertently comingled with redesigned product and shipped after December 20, 2024. Those impacted by the expansion of the recall will be contacted with additional instructions. This recall, as expanded, impacts all Speed Control Dials manufactured and distributed between the dates of August 17, 2023, through March 10, 2025.
THEY WERE STILL FUCKING SELLING AND SHIPPING OUT DANGEROUS PARTS! WHILE LABELING THEM AS SAFE!
the previous recall was for speed control dials manufactured and distributed from august 17 2023 to november 21 2024. what is another several months of dangerous parts between friends, right?
problems resulting from this include:
Continued drive: The Speed Control Dial does not fully stop the drive unit when rotated to the zero position.
Involuntary movement: Unintended activation of the SmartDrive motor without intentional user input while the Speed Control Dial is at the zero position and the dial light is flashing in standby mode.
Loss of power: When the Speed Control Dial is rotated forward from the zero position, SmartDrive motor movement is initiated, and then the Speed Control Dial unexpectedly shuts down.
Failure to start driving: When the dial is rotated forward from the zero position, no SmartDrive motor activation occurs.
unexpected movement in a wheelchair is pretty fucking bad, crashing into something is pretty fucking bad, accidentally running someone over is pretty fucking bad, and being stuck is pretty fucking bad. this can really hurt people. so, how many complaints are there now?
As of March 27, 2025, Max Mobility/Permobil has received 781 complaints associated with the Speed Control Dial. As of March 27, 2025, five (5) serious injuries have been reported for this issue. The reported serious injuries include a fractured hip, fractured tibia, fractured malleolus bone, broken ribs, and a concussion.
the previous recall announced that as of december 12 2024, there had been 646 complaints and three serious injuries from this one broken part. in just the months since then, there have been 135 more complaints (not people affected, complaints made directly to the company), and two more COMPLETELY AVOIDABLE serious injuries. these types of injuries affect people for the rest of their lives. it is a miracle that nobody has been killed from this yet.
if you have one of these systems, you probably know the drill by now, and were likely already contacted. click through the FDA recall link, follow the max mobility/permobil instructions, and hope they actually tell the truth about the replacement parts being safe this time.
but even if their current customers have all been contacted, I want everyone else, including future potential customers, to know how badly max mobility/permobil has handled all of this at the expense of other people's safety and other people's lives. this is not okay.
wheelchair users deserve better than to have to worry about their wheelchair fucking killing them or someone around them.
