This article describes the hydro geological conditions of the Lower Prut region in the limits of... more This article describes the hydro geological conditions of the Lower Prut region in the limits of the Republic of Moldova. A description of aquifer complexes and horizons, as well as of their distribution is performed. Characteristic of water abundance, estimation for rocks for the sediments, for the chemical composition and quality of groundwater are presented in the article. Information is also provided on the groundwater reserves, separately, for each aquifer complex and horizon.

Present studies are based on the evaluation of the potential of geological sites, infrastructure... more Present studies are based on the evaluation of the potential of geological sites, infrastructure of area, cultural heritage, economical and human potential for establishing a geopark in the Republic of Moldova. The establishment of a geopark on the territory of the Republic of Moldova would allow the full exploitation of the potential of the geological sites, the human potential for the development of tourism in a complex aspect. in this paper, the lower part of the Bâc-Nistru interfluve, in the territory of the Anenii Noi district, is evaluated. The potential geopark would integrate geological sites of regional and international importance, as well as cultural heritage well represented in the area.

Present paper objective is to assess the seismic hazard and seismic risk and provide an analyses ... more Present paper objective is to assess the seismic hazard and seismic risk and provide an analyses of earthquake scenario for the transboundary area of Ungheni town in Republic of Moldova and Ungheni-Prut in Romania. For the present study as design seismic action (earthquake scenario) was selected the Vrancea earthquake with 475 years return period and magnitude Mw = 7.9. At first it was analyzed specified earthquake scenario using special macro seismic attenuation equation. This allowed the obtaining of probable distribution of the intensity in the study area. The estimation of seismic risk analyses and vulnerability of buildings in the study area was made based on statistical data and field evaluation in terms of MSK-64, especially for urban area of Ungheni, and transboundary villages.

The article represents the main morphostructural characteristics, composition and geological-gene... more The article represents the main morphostructural characteristics, composition and geological-genetic aspects of the reefs in the northwestern region of the Republic of Moldova, also known as the Prut Toltrels. For several decades the reefs have been exploited in an extensive way that does not override the protection of natural monuments. The Prut Toltrels, through its beauty and splendor, creates amazing, special landscapes that must be preserved as rarities and exceptional geological monuments. It must become objects of cultural tourism, recreation, spiritual enrichment of people through contact with nature. It is necessary to prohibit the barbaric destruction of reefs and the creation in the region of the spread of reefs protected areas, natural parks and the preservation of what has remained intact for present and future generations.

The work is proposing a preventive assessment of the ecological situation of floristic community ... more The work is proposing a preventive assessment of the ecological situation of floristic community of Botanical Garden of the National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History of Moldova in the aspect of analysis of fytocenotic component of the vegetation. Grădina Botanică a Muzeului Naţional de Etnografie şi Istorie Naturală din Chişinău-prima grădină botanică din Basarabia, a fost înfiinţată la începutul secolului XX, în baza grădinii-parc, plantate pe acest teritoriu pe la mijlocul secolului al XIXlea. În componenţa acesteia intrau specii arborescente autohtone, menirea principală a cărora era de a-i face cunoscuţi pe vizitatorii muzeului cu elementele de bază ale florei lemnoase autohtone din Basarabia, de a cultiva generaţiei tinere atitudinea grijulie faţă de natură. Din acest moment a apărut o comunitate floristică, menită să asigure un echilibru între natură şi om, urmărind scopul de a păstra genofondul forestier autohton, sub aspectul vegetaţiei spontane. De-a lungul anilor Grădina Botanică a suportat diverse modificări, dar şi-a păstrat esenţa, fiind până la ultimul război mondial unica instituţie de acest gen din Basarabia. Crearea ariilor cu vegetaţie forestieră în biosistemele urbane, rurale (parcuri, grădini botanice etc.) vine să asigure, în primul rând, un mediu pentru susţinerea viabilităţii socio-umane, de recreaţie, cultural-educative etc., iar în al doilea rând-o secvenţă a varietăţilor sistemelor sociale şi celor naturale pentru echilibrarea circuitelor de materie, energie şi substanţă între ele. Comunităţile silvice, create artificial după structura şi compoziţia pădurilor virgine, treptat se încadrează în categoria habitatelor naturale, în cazul păstrării integrităţii acestora [1, 7]. Acest fapt presupune crearea fluxurilor directe şi indirecte, mai mult difuze, de informaţie şi energie între formaţiunile de păduri naturale şi cele artificiale repartizate discret, în aşa mod păstrându-se continuitatea şi integritatea categoriilor de sisteme (naturale, socio-umane) într-un spaţiu ecogeografic definitivat [2, 5]. Actualmente Grădina Botanică este o continuare a Expoziţiei pavilionare a Muzeului "Natura-Omul-Cultura" [9] şi constă din două sectoare: unul este amplasat la mijlocul cartierului, iar al doilea-în faţa sediului Muzeului. Margaritiferidae is an ancient freshwater bivalve family originated in the Jurassic in East Asia.... more Margaritiferidae is an ancient freshwater bivalve family originated in the Jurassic in East Asia. Here, we revise several nominal taxa of fossil freshwater pearl mussels that were recovered from the Upper Pliocene and Pleistocene deposits of the Dniester and Prut river valleys. Based on morphological and stratigraphic data, we found that these nominal taxa belong to the genus Pseudunio and are junior synonyms of P. flabellatiformis (Grigorowitch-Beresowski, 1915). The new synonymy is proposed as follows: Margaritifera (Pseudunio) moldavica Chepalyga, 1964 syn. nov., Margaritifera (Pseudunio) robusta robusta Chepalyga, 1964 syn. nov., Margaritifera (Pseudunio) robusta speensis Chepalyga, 1964 syn. nov., and Margaritifera (Pseudunio) robusta tirassica Chepalyga, 1964 syn. nov. A description of five outcrops of fluvial deposits located on the territory of the modern basins of the Dniester and Prut rivers is given. Based on the granulometric composition of the sediments and the presence in them of the fossil shells of freshwater bivalve mollusks (Bivalvia: Unionoida), an assumption has been made about the characteristics of the ancient river ecosystems of the Dniester and Prut on different Pliocene and Pleistocene time sections. The studied outcrops are located in the basins of the Dniester and Prut rivers. Materials were collected from two Pliocene (Brînza, Giurgiuleşti) outcrops and the ages of the second group of localities (Sucleia, Slobozia Mare, Gura Bîcului) are from Middle to Late Pleistocene. The determination of the taxonomic position was carried out using standard malacological methods. Geochemical data were used for the environmental reconstruction and included stable isotope ratio and trace element compositions in subfossil freshwater bivalve shell (Bivalvia: Unionoida). This paper gives a general view on the Stoliniceni Formation exposed mainly in the central area o... more This paper gives a general view on the Stoliniceni Formation exposed mainly in the central area of Codru height. It reflects a short historical study of these deposits. It mentions the lithology and mineralogical differences of these deposits in comparison with the ones belonging to Balta Formation, with mention to the presence of jasper and other Carpathian originating rocks, whose presence it is for the first time mentioned on the Basarabia territory. The mineralogical structure is almost identical to the one from all terraces of Dniester and Prut rivers. As the initial type-section of Stolniceni Formation disappeared as consequence of rocks mining, we are proposing as lectostratotype the section located in vicinity of the village Leordoaia. We describe a late Miocene to early Pliocene axial drainage system in the East Carpathian forelan... more We describe a late Miocene to early Pliocene axial drainage system in the East Carpathian foreland, which was an important sediment supplier to the Black Sea and the Dacian Basin. Its existence explains the striking progradation of the northwest Black Sea shelf prior to the onset of sediment supply from the continental-scale Danube River in the late Pliocene to Pleistocene. This axial drainage system evolved due to the diachronous along-strike evolution of the Carpathians and their foreland; continental collision, overfilling, slab breakoff, and subsequent exhumation of the foreland occurred earlier in the West Carpathians than in the East Carpathians. After overfilling of the western foreland, excess sediment was transferred along the basin axis, giving rise to a 300-km-wide by 800-km-long, southeast-prograding river-shelf-slope system with a sediment flux of ∼12 × 103 km3/m.y. &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;p&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp... more &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;p&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;The Carpathian orogen is part of the Alpine-Himalayan collision zone and formed as the result of the collision of the Tisza-Dacia and ALCAPA mega-units with the European southern margin, following a protracted phase of subduction, slab roll-back and accretionary wedge formation. The foreland basin of the East Carpathians is 800 km long and stretches out across Poland, Ukraine, Moldova and Romania. We use the results of our intensive field research to unravel the sedimentary architecture of this basin and reveal how it responded to the final phases of foreland vergent thrusting, continental collision and subsequent slab detachment. We discuss the asymmetry in the basins evolution and eventual inversion and relate this to the diachronous evolution of the Carpathian orogen. We also address the impact of changing subsidence patterns and base-level changes on connectivity with the Central and Eastern Paratethys, important for faunal exchange and patterns of endemism. We finally show that continental collision led to the establishment of a Late Miocene NW-SE prograding axial drainage system in the foreland supplying abundant sediment to the NW Black Sea, thus triggering large-scale shelf edge progradation.&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;/p&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;

Materials were collected from two Pliocene (Brînza, Giurgiuleşti) outcrops and the ages of the second group of localities (Sucleia, Slobozia Mare, Gura Bîcului) are from Middle to Late Pleistocene. The determination of the taxonomic position was carried out using standard malacological methods. Geochemical data were used for the environmental reconstruction and included stable isotope ratio and trace element compositions in subfossil freshwater bivalve shell (Bivalvia: Unionoida). This paper gives a general view on the Stoliniceni Formation exposed mainly in the central area o... more This paper gives a general view on the Stoliniceni Formation exposed mainly in the central area of Codru height. It reflects a short historical study of these deposits. It mentions the lithology and mineralogical differences of these deposits in comparison with the ones belonging to Balta Formation, with mention to the presence of jasper and other Carpathian originating rocks, whose presence it is for the first time mentioned on the Basarabia territory. The mineralogical structure is almost identical to the one from all terraces of Dniester and Prut rivers. As the initial type-section of Stolniceni Formation disappeared as consequence of rocks mining, we are proposing as lectostratotype the section located in vicinity of the village Leordoaia. Its existence explains the striking progradation of the northwest Black Sea shelf prior to the onset of sediment supply from the continental-scale Danube River in the late Pliocene to Pleistocene. This axial drainage system evolved due to the diachronous along-strike evolution of the Carpathians and their foreland; continental collision, overfilling, slab breakoff, and subsequent exhumation of the foreland occurred earlier in the West Carpathians than in the East Carpathians. After overfilling of the western foreland, excess sediment was transferred along the basin axis, giving rise to a 300-km-wide by 800-km-long, southeast-prograding river-shelf-slope system with a sediment flux of ∼12 × 103 km3/m.y. &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;p&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp... more &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;p&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;The Carpathian orogen is part of the Alpine-Himalayan collision zone and formed as the result of the collision of the Tisza-Dacia and ALCAPA mega-units with the European southern margin, following a protracted phase of subduction, slab roll-back and accretionary wedge formation. The foreland basin of the East Carpathians is 800 km long and stretches out across Poland, Ukraine, Moldova and Romania. We use the results of our intensive field research to unravel the sedimentary architecture of this basin and reveal how it responded to the final phases of foreland vergent thrusting, continental collision and subsequent slab detachment. We discuss the asymmetry in the basins evolution and eventual inversion and relate this to the diachronous evolution of the Carpathian orogen. We also address the impact of changing subsidence patterns and base-level changes on connectivity with the Central and Eastern Paratethys, important for faunal exchange and patterns of endemism. In the first volume of “Natural Protected Areas in Moldova” have been described in detail 108 pro... more In the first volume of “Natural Protected Areas in Moldova” have been described in detail 108 protected natural areas, 68 geological and paleontological protected natural areas, 27 hydrological protected natural areas and 13 soil protected natural areas. Geological and paleontological protected natural areas were assigned to the category of Natural Monuments, category (A) (according to the Law on State Protected Natu ral Areas Fund adopted by the Parlament of the Republic of Moldova Decree N 1538-XIII, 1998. In the Annex nr. 3to the Law on State Protected Natural Areas Fund (1998) were listed 86 geological and paleontological protected natural areas (with the total area of 2 681,8 ha). As a result of the research (2012) showed that only 72 (an area of 2 214,6 ha) comply protected territory. Depending on the shape, structure and origin they are subdivided into 6 categories: Caves (2) (cave “Emil Racovita” and “Surprises” cave); Geological outcrops with scientific value (14); Sites with fauna fossils (7); Ravines and gorges (8); Rocks (9); Fossil reefs (11); Ravines (20); Quarries (5). Most of them are located in Northern and Central Moldova. On the basis of scientific investigations it is proposed that the landscape reserve “Răpele de la Cimișlia” (Annex nr. 5) should be included in the category of Natural Monuments, Geological and paleontological protected natural areas by state. It is also proposed to exclude from the list of state protected natural areas the following natu- ral monuments, being of little scientific relevance: Geological outcrops “Chetrosu”, “Râpa Zguriţa”, Vâlceaua “La Humărie”, the hollow ravine near town Nisporeni, Selişte tectonic fracture, Codrilor Levantine Terrace area, “Steep slope near the village Sineşti” sand and sandstone outcrops “Râpa din Sălcuţa”, Baurci outcrop, Ialpug geologi- cal section of the river valley, “Cimitirul cailor” quarry, Tofan’s ravine, “În dos” ravine, outcrop near the town of Taraclia, “La chetrărie” ravine, Costeşti outcrop. The environmental situation is unsatisfactory for the majority of geological and paleontological monuments protected by state for the main following reasons: lack of the information boards with brief description of protected area, extracting building material (stone, gravel, clay etc.), dumps presence, grazing of animals etc. Hydrological protected natural areas were assigned to the category of Natural Monuments, category (B) (Law on State Protected Natural Areas Fund …, 1998). In the Annex nr. 3 to the Law on State Protected Natural Areas Fund (1998) were listed 31 protected areas with the total area of 99,8 ha. Most are assigned to the category of springs – 29, two of these are mineral springs (Harjauca and Oniţcani), two spring-fountain (Dubăsari and Proteagailovca), an aquatic ecosystem (La Moară) and ground- water reservoirs (on river Ciuluc, Mihailovca). According to geologic conditions, most are descendants spring sources, in particular surface and terrace springs and more rarely of compact rocks (Source of Jeloboc vilage). By the water temperature, all refer to cold springs, and by the degree of mineralization, most are oligo (less than 500 mg/dm 3 salts) and only two springs (in Oniţcani and Harjauca villages) are mineral water 500 mg/dm 3 salt). After the contents elements of dissolved salts, ion chlorine, sulfates, nitrates and pH, the water in most Hydrological Natural Monuments (HNM) do not exceed the maximum permissible concentration for drinking water framework. The environmental status of HNM except for some recently renovated (in Plop, Fântâniţa, Jeloboc, Coto- va villages etc.), it is unsatisfactory in some respects, such as lack of information boards, adjacent land use, greening protection zone, presence of household waste etc. Hydrological natural protected areas are listed in alphabetical order. Soil natural protected areas have been assigned to the category Resource reserves (Law on State Protected Natural Areas Fund, 1998). In the Annex 6 to this Law were listed 13 protected areas with total area of 523 ha. In total 13 soil protected areas are described from which 8 were included in the Law from… 1998 Act and 5 new protected areas are proposed (Lozova – typical brown soil, Hâncu brown luvic soil; Hârbovăţ – chernozem soil; Svetlâi – chernozem vertic soil; Brejeni – solonetz molic soil) instead of those 5 invalidated. So that soil protected natural areas include most important soil types from Moldova.

Prut Toltrels. For several decades the reefs have been exploited in an extensive way that does not override the protection of natural monuments. The Prut Toltrels, through its beauty and splendor, creates amazing, special landscapes that must be preserved as rarities and exceptional geological monuments. It must become objects of cultural tourism, recreation, spiritual enrichment of people through contact with nature. It is necessary to prohibit the barbaric destruction of reefs
and the creation in the region of the spread of reefs protected areas, natural parks and the preservation of what has remained intact for present and future generations.
