Wayang Kulit or shadow theatre, an ancient theatrical performance practice has given opportunity ... more Wayang Kulit or shadow theatre, an ancient theatrical performance practice has given opportunity and space for researchers to explore the possibilities of creating a stimulating environment for performance and cognitive development among cerebral palsy children. This study looks at how three important performative elements in Wayang Kulit performance, “story-telling, role-playing and space” are explored for the development of cognitive abilities; i) to learn, ii) to sequence and iii) to reason, among cerebral palsy children. The study employs an action-research methodology which looks at participation-observation and artistic processes ranging from drama/theatre approaches to speech and vocal exercises. To assist the children in achieving the intended goals, “sensitive assistance” approach was also employed whereby teachers/facilitators assist the children during the workshop and training sessions. The cerebral palsy children were not only the participants of the workshops but more ...

Raag (melody) and Taal (rhythm) are the fundamental elements that govern a Hindustani piece. Today in Malaysia, while a classical Sitar recital still retains many of its original forms and practices, local musicians like Samuel J. Dass, are experimenting with new musical ideas

A random sample of primary and secondary school teachers in five cities in mainland China was selected to respond to the self-evaluation questionnaire, and 300 valid questionnaires were collected. The research was carried out to (1) investigate the levels of self-efficacy of music teachers in primary and secondary schools, (2) determine the factors that influenced music teachers' self-efficacy, and (3) explore the relationship between teachers’ self-efficacy and professional development. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, T-test, analysis of variance, and regression. First, the results showed that the mean value of music teachers’ self-efficacy was 7.16. Second, the middle school teachers reported lower self-efficacy compared to teachers in the primary schools. Third, although teache...

This study examined how speaking assessments were administered face-to-face for Grade 5 and 6 elementary school students prior to and after introducing the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and amid a global pandemic between April to October 2020. The paper also reports the challenges and strategies employed in carrying out the speaking assessments following the CEFR while adhering to the SOP. The study employed a qualitative research method that utilised semi-structured interviews to elicit information from four teachers who taught in eight schools within Niigata City, Japan. Findings suggest that prior to the implementation of CEFR, not all teachers carried out speaking assessments. However, the impleme...

It has become the most cutting-edge research direction of artificial intelligence. For one, this article delves into a data mining model based on machine learning. Data intelligence combines the way of thinking that mimics the human brain with data mining theory, which has a great effect on data enhancement, and applies the theory of data intelligence search model to practical problems. The concept of the number of intelligent objects with the same data is proposed, and the intelligent search model of continuous data in this field is established to provide help to solve the intelligent search problem under the background of big data. This paper also studies the music database management and control system. Nowadays, there are many kinds and numbers of music resources, which has caused ...

It seeks to show how deeply felt experiences of the colonial past still influence contemporary expressions of identity by Tamil hip-hop musicians in the context of the popular music industry in post-colonial Malaysia. In doing so, what is revealed is how narratives of identity within the Tamil diaspora in Malaysia are located across multiple discourses of historical, geographical, socio-economic, and political realities. The ethnographic material gathered for this thesis was obtained through personal communications with senior members of the Malaysian Tamil community, members of the music industry, and contemporary hip-hop musicians to establish an understanding of how identity was and continues to be represented by and for the Tamil diasporic community particularly among Tamil hip-hop mu...

Around the world, individuals and communities had to deal with both health-related fears and stress, prompted by social distancing and isolation. While the health advantages of the quarantine order have been well documented, its emotional strain on people has had far reaching consequences. As a coping mechanism to deal with the stress of quarantine, the internet was suddenly flooded with posts and videos of people turning to music as a form of individual and communal healing. This paper looks at how communities around the world found solace in music as a form of solidarity that united people regardless of age, gender, nationality, creed and political affiliation. The prospects of music in presenting people with a sense of belonging in times of solitude is explored through the various accounts around the world on the healing power of music. Findings further strengthen previous works on the effects of music on a person's emotional stability and as a means of communal solidarity.

However, the implementation of CEFR emphasised the need to teach speaking and carry out speaking assessments. The CEFR also served as guidance for the teachers in preparing the assessment scoring rubrics. The results also showed that the speaking assessments were implemented individually instead of in groups before the pandemic and the presence of the masks, which increased the student’s anxiety and affected their performance. However, the teachers employed various strategies to overcome the challenges by modifying the assessment tasks and utilising web conferencing technology.

This article presents a performative reflection of the archaeological discoveries from Kedah Tua'... more This article presents a performative reflection of the archaeological discoveries from Kedah Tua's early civilisation envisioned through the site-specific theatrical project entitled "Bermulanya Di Sini…Kedah Tua". Different elements from archaeological excavations were selected and adapted into a performance project by way of the curation of theatrical movements. The interpretation of the archaeological findings is translated using specific elements from the study of performing arts such as movement, space, and time to help simplify the dissemination of an otherwise complex knowledge of historical data. The movements choreographed for the different dance scenes and overall performance are based on the archaeological findings of metal, monuments, and an industrialised civilisation. Recent interest in performing arts as a reflection of the archaeological discoveries can be seen as an attempt to broaden the scope of archaeology as a discipline to encompass the totality of the human experience. This collaborative work between the field of archaeology and performance presents choreographers with interesting approaches in exploring notions concerning the performing arts.

The lack of tangible audio resources on Kedah Tua's ancient civilisation was a challenge to the initial compositional process for this production. To overcome this, the theoretical framework of soundscape ecology was employed as a working definition to understand how the different sonic vocabulary of Kedah Tua's ancient history can be reimaged and repositioned within the musical compositional structure of the play. The paper examines how the theory of soundscape ecology can be employed on the historical narratives of the past to create present day soundscape compositions that bring to life probable scenes of the daily activities and livelihood of this ancient civilisation that once flourished on a maritime trade industry between the 2nd-6th AD.

Three sets of performances were The Sound of Silence a devised play, Wayang Chulia shadow puppet performance, and Samuel J. Dass' and Michael Veerapen's solo and duo performance. By way of alluding to issues and arguments raised during the roundtable discussions, this critical review examines the varying ways that these performances demonstrate the outcome of a traversing between the academia, industry and community. It can be seen that it is possible for the practitioners of the performing arts to simultaneously represent their respective disciplines and negotiate adapting approaches and raising awareness of one another's discourses while compliant with the normalcy of the difference between the sectors of the academia, industry and community.

Musicians combine Hindustani musical elements such as Raag (melody) and Taal (rhythm) with different musical elements such as the Chinese pentatonic scale and Arabian Maqam as well as genres to produce a musical blend broadly dubbed as 'fusion music'. This article explores how the characteristics of the Hindustani elements of Raag and Taal are adopted to complement the structure and style of the new composition. Different Sitar playing styles and techniques are employed when performing fusion compositions that use Blues or Bossa Nova genres.
