En la cobertura de los sucesos políticos, los medios de comunicación proyectan unos enfoques que median la realidad, pues transfieren determinados marcos interpretativos. Esto sucede de manera particular en la cobertura de los escándalos políticos, debido al capital simbólico que para los políticos significa su buena reputación. El presente artículo analiza la cobertura de los casos de corrupción política de España y Gran Bretaña en la década de 1990. Atendiendo de manera específica a la noticia icono como una forma de enfoque (frame) sugerida por Bennett, y mediante el análisis de contenido cualitativo y cuantitativo, esta investigación estudia la presencia y la acción de noticias icono en España y en el Reino Unido. La investigación muestra que la cobertura utilizó noticias icono en forma de palabras vívidas, que se reprodujeron de manera extensa en los medios, de manera que llegaron a funcionar como elementos simbólicos, encapsulando, de forma condensada, toda una historia, hasta llegar a convertirse en algo emblemático de una etapa política. El análisis permite concluir que el poder que los medios tienen en la cobertura de los escándalos políticos no viene determinado tanto por la acción del periodismo de investigación, como también y fundamentalmente por el marco interpretativo que los medios transfieren en su cobertura. This study discusses data from the most extensive survey of journalism students conducted in Britain, and similar data from Spanish journalism students, collected as they commence their studies in journalism. It shows that significant differences exist between these countries in students' motivations to be journalists, including `public service' motives, and in their views on the social roles of news media. Yet, British and Spanish students exhibit similar views on journalism ethics. To consider effects of `professionalization', students' responses are compared with those of experienced journalists previously surveyed in both countries. The findings suggest that distinct, national journalistic `cultures' have influenced students before they arrive at university.

Various studies have attempted to conceptualize and assess professionalization of political communication from different perspectives. This article examines the professionalization of central government communication in Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom, applying a framework developed using indicators derived from the sociology of work and from the strategic planning and quality literature. Results show that there are clear indices of the development of formal rules governing the practice of policy- or information-related government communication, distinguishing it from more partisan, politicized communication. Although mechanisms are being introduced to improve the process of communication, practices are still far from being fully systematized. This study investigates the impact of prewar news coverage on international support for President Bush's decision to invade Iraq in 2003. The study is based on a survey conducted one week prior to the start of the Iraq War among 1787 university students from six countries in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The findings indicate that exposure to prewar news coverage was associated with more positive attitudes toward Iraq and higher levels of fear related to the possible consequences of a war. Stronger international support for a US invasion correlated with more positive attitudes toward Iraq, less fear about a possible war and lower levels of anti-Americanism.

A point of departure for this book is the paradox between the seemingly limitless promise modern web technologies hold for enhanced political communication and their limited actual contribution. Empirical evidence indicates that neither citizens nor political parties are taking full advantage of online platforms to advance political participation. This is particularly evident when considering the websites of political parties, which have taken on two main functions: i) Disseminating information to citizens and journalists about the history, structure, programme and activities of the party; ii) Monitoring citizens’ opinions in regard to different political questions and policy proposals that are under discussion. Cities have become the chief place of residence and work of the majority of the world's citizens and engines of regions' prosperity. Understanding how city reputation-a key intangible good-is constructed is an important challenge for academics and a range of other stakeholders. Politicians and officials seek to position and manage their cities in ways that win legitimacy and trust for themselves and prosperity for their citizens and other stakeholders. This study develops understanding of the concept of city reputation through a multi-methods empirical study of two medium-sized Spanish cities where earlier research has shown there are gaps between government performance (as attested to by performance data on a series of city services), city communicators' accounts of their communication strategies and policy priorities and citizens' perceptions of their cities' reputation and performance. Based on semi-structured interviews and focus groups, the reasons for these gaps are explored. The paradox of a less wealthy Malaga more content with the information it receives from its government and a more wealthy Vitoria critical of what citizens consider the government's self-congratulatory messages, suggests that more research should be carried out to understand both how government communication can achieve a better balance between information and persuasion and the importance of expectations and perceptions in citizens' satisfaction with government communication and governments themselves.

Although populist communication has become pervasive throughout Europe, many important questions on its political consequences remain unanswered. First, previous research has neglected the differential effects of populist communication on the Left and Right. Second, internationally comparative studies are missing. Finally, previous research mostly studied attitudinal outcomes, neglecting behavioral effects. To address these key issues, this paper draws on a unique, extensive, and comparative experiment in sixteen European countries ( = 15,412) to test the effects of populist communication on political engagement. The findings show that anti-elitist populism has the strongest mobilizing effects, and anti-immigrant messages have the strongest demobilizing effects.
