Este artículo analiza el proceso de contratación y construcción del Ferrocarril del Cauca en el período comprendido entre 1872 y 1907, con el propósito de estudiar el desarrollo de estas concesiones y evidenciar la asimetría en los procesos de negociación de los gobiernos nacional y regional frente al capital y otros gobiernos, debido a la firma de contratos incompletos y con fuertes asimetrías en la información y en la capacidad de negociación. A causa de esto, el Ferrocarril presenta los costos de construcción más altos del período y
uno de los promedios de construcción más bajos del siglo XIX, para una línea férrea que se consideró como fundamental para el desarrollo económico del país.

Abstract:
This article analyzes the contracting and construction process of the Cauca Railroad in the period between 1872 and 1907, with the objective of studying how these contracts were developed and show the asymmetry in the negotiations processes between national and regional governments and sources of capital and other governments, by discussing signed incomplete contracts and the existence of large information and negotiation capacity asymmetries. Due to this, this railroad has the highest construction costs of the period and one of the lowest construction averages of the 19th century, for a railway that was considered fundamental for the economic development of the country.

The purpose of this article is to show how the construction and operation of the Ferrocarril de A... more The purpose of this article is to show how the construction and operation of the Ferrocarril de Antioquia (Antioquia railroad) makes it possible to analyze the social processes and the action of foreign entrepreneurs in terms of public policy, from the local and regional perspective of the state. Methodologically, we use both primary sources and secondary literature of the period, written from the perspective of economic and business history, to show how, despite failing to reach any of the goals proposed in the original contracts, the railroad became a symbol of what is possible and of transition to modernity.

However, unlike other experiments in which the railroads became articulators of regional or national markets and, perhaps most important, in a tangible way to make the concept of nation, this did not happen in Colombia. In addition to the late and disjointed transport system, the Panama Railroad Co., became one of the elements that would eventually help sustain a serious challenge on Colombian sovereignty over Panama.

This article analyzes the process of construction and operation of the Cúcuta Railroad, which was... more This article analyzes the process of construction and operation of the Cúcuta Railroad, which was intended as a transport system with significant regional results. This project had one of the most interesting routes of the 19th century: the line from Cucuta to Puerto Villamizar, which was an initiative of private capital, built by national engineers without any funding or subsidy from the government. However, the other lines built later didn't fulfill their purpose. The system built and operated by the Cúcuta Railroad gave the liberal elite of this region an efficient system of communication to move the main agricultural export product of the time: coffee. Also, it helped to consolidate the hegemonic elite, giving them the material means to oppose the government of the Regeneración during the civil wars of the 19th century.

The text analyzes the process of construction and operation of the Ferrocarril de Bolívar, which ... more The text analyzes the process of construction and operation of the Ferrocarril de Bolívar, which despite its limited extension, generated significant economic activity and a profound change in the dynamics of power in the "Bolivar Grande" (which included several of today's Colombian departments), as it allowed the thriving development of one of its subregions in the second half of the nineteenth century. The study of the construction contracts for this railroad provides a clear view of the Colombian states vulnerability with respect to greedy investors, who saw in railroads an opportunity for financial speculation.

La moneda y la política monetaria se convirtieron en un instrumento de política estatal y, sobre todo, en una herramienta fundamental de intervención del Estado en la política. La constitución y aceptación de una moneda “nacional” no fue tarea fácil, pues se recorrió un camino que nos llevó desde la privatización completa de la política monetaria durante el Radicalismo, a los fallidos intentos de unificación económica y nacional durante la Regeneración, hasta el difícil proceso de amortización y conversión que se inició durante las administraciones Marroquín y Reyes que, en últimas, condujeron a la unificación monetaria durante el gobierno de Pedro Nel Ospina. La hipótesis central de este trabajo es que la política monetaria fue uno de los elementos centrales en la construcción del Estado –como aparato funcional– y de la Nación –como aparato cultural– en la Colombia decimonónica.
