With “The Bear” likely clawing its way to the top of the Emmys race, again, it might be easy for voters to discount other comedy series. But, “Hacks” and a plethora of other shows have a chance against the reigning champion, Variety TV editor Michael Schneider and senior TV features editor Emily Longeretta discuss in this episode of Variety‘s Awards Circuit video series.
Season 3 of Max’s “Hacks,” starring Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder, is in the running for nominations this year. The series, which has been nominated for 27 Emmys and won 6, still has plenty of chances to nab a nom this year, and was recently renewed for a fourth season.
“This season especially, they kill it,” said Schneider. “Both Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder are fantastic in this. It takes it to places I wasn’t expecting this season.”
Longeretta continued the praise: “The way they wrapped season 2 made it really up in the air with how they were going to continue, and not just continue but swing that high again. And they did it somehow.”
While “The Bear” seems to be the obvious frontrunner for the comedy category, Schneider thinks many folks believe the FX series is not a comedy, meaning the race is far from over.
Longeretta and Schneider pointed to other comedy series like ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “Palm Royale” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” as comedies that will hopefully see their flowers in 2024.
“This is a crazy category, filled with, stacked with a lot of contenders,” Schneider says.
At the end of the episode, Schneider and Longeretta give their picks for other comedies you shouldn’t forget about before voting.
