"On the day" would be used in something like this. "On the day that WWII ended people all over the world celebrated."
"On the day that we left for our vacation my daughter-in-law had her first baby."

"In the day" is a bit different to me. I would say it's most used in the phrase "back in the day" and it means back at a certain time in history. Usually a time in someone's life that is long past. For example, "Back in the day when I was in school we had had chalkboards instead of white boards."
"Back in the day kids played outside and didn't stay indoors playing on computers all the time."

Both are synonymous, but, One day is more dramatic and Someday is more general which also tells that there is no unusual effort required for something to happen.

A: They are essentially the same thing. Using “majority” instead of “almost my whole day” is more concise and proper. “Majority” means most or almost all of something.
