The square patterns on the intersections are where the City of Las Vegas installed dice decorations on Fremont – 1s, 2s, 3s, etc, corresponding with the intersection. After constant repairs the design was abandoned in the early 80s.

Fremont Street closed for roadwork in Fall ‘79, and the city experimented with turning this section of Fremont into a pedestrian zone through the remaining months of the year.

Undated photos. The first is late 80s to early 90s, the second is late ‘91 to ‘94. The only difference here is that Golden Goose and Glitter Gulch casinos have been turned into a strip club, The Girls of Glitter Gulch. Owner Herb Pastor remodeled and connected the two businesses over Thanksgiving weekend, as he explained, “while the city council was at home and not paying attention.”
TOPLESS BAR IRKS OFFICIALS. The city ordered Herb Pastor to close his doors because he didn’t properly notify the city that the facility was becoming a sexually oriented business. “I think that is the worst thing that could ever happen to Fremont Street,” Mayor Jan Jones said. “A topless bar is inconsistent with the image the city is trying to create in downtown.” - Review Journal, 12/4/91
The Girls of Glitter Gulch remained in business until 2016.
Fremont & 1st, Las Vegas, c. 1943 (could be ‘42–‘45)
Buy War Bonds painted on 18 Fremont St; State Cafe, Las Vegas BBQ, Ethel’s Liquor, and Las Vegas Pharmacy. The upstairs portion of the pharmacy building was the Oak Hotel from the 20s to ‘42, then La Bonita Hotel through the 50s when the building was demolished.
“The hotel where I was born at 1st and Fremont … My grandparents operated the Oak Hotel. When one of the relatives from an outlying area was due to give birth they would move into the hotel so they could be closer to medical help if needed. It was cheaper and more convenient than the hospital. My birth certificate says I was born in Las Vegas at the Oak Hotel and I was delivered alive by a M.D.” - John Jansen, told to Vintage Las Vegas.
