I suppose this is some sort of odd kink that Robert Heinlein had but as with many kinks, when you’re not into it, it reads like a horror story. If this were a smut book that would be one thing but it’s not a smut book and it’s not described as a smut book or advertised as a smut book. The first two thirds of this book do nothing to warn you about what’s coming. So unless you have the exact same kinks as Robert Heinlein this reads as an extremely uncomfortable horror story as the narrative is depicting it as a good thing.

As usual this book is also being homophobic about it.

For those of you from outside the US or those of you who didn’t pay attention in government class, in the US senate there’s really no limit to the amount of time a senator can speak. So sometimes if they don’t want a bill to pass they just. Don’t stop talking. To hopefully get past the deadline to vote on a bill. This is called filibustering.

You know, my mother was deathly afraid of flying on airplanes. Every time she was in a plane she felt like she had to be mentally holding the plane in the air or else it would fall out of the sky.

Now of course this is absolutely ridiculous magical thinking but my mother wasn’t a stupid person. She knew that trying to mentally keep the plane in the air wasn’t doing anything. It was a complete waste of her energy. It would’ve been better for her and everyone else if she could’ve just accepted that worrying wouldn’t change the outcome in the slightest so there was no purpose in her wasting all of that energy.

Mental illness doesn’t listen to logic though. It insists that you need to hold the plane up in the air or else bad things will happen even when you know that it’s wrong.
