I gotta admit, the Obama administration’s decision to appoint Michael McFaul US ambassador to Russia in 2012 still baffles me. For reasons not limited to:

  • Moscow is traditionally a career appointee post, meaning McFaul (a political appointee AKA doesn’t know how to do his job) was a change for both the embassy staff AND the Russians
  • McFaul was for bombing Libya in the name of “democracy” (he seems to be a very gullible man). This put him at… odds with the Russians.
  • He’d been a vocal critic of Putin for almost a decade by then, something which he was also very sensitive about, thinking Putin was out to get him. (Imo his critiques were just dumb and if he felt judged it was probably for how dumb his critiques were)

A bit predictably, he got bullied by Moscow in a way that (afaik) doesn’t happen to career appointees (because there’s mutual respect between people who are actually doing their jobs)

So many people who get periods are like “Ugh it sucks that having a menstrual cycle makes you almost die every month” like no that’s not normal you need to go to the doctor

If any of your symptoms go beyond “just like, super annoying ugh whatever” levels you should probably go see a doctor about that

You should not feel so depressed you want to die, you should not be getting mood swings so bad that you become violent, your cramps should not be so bad that you can’t get out of bed, your period should not last more than a week, you should not be losing so much blood that you feel dizzy. Go to the doctor.

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)

Endometriosis

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

Uterine Fibroids

(Cleveland Clinic & Mayo Clinic are both pretty good about using gender-neutral language in their articles).

Adding Adenomyosis here, Endometriosis’s lesser known but equally awful sister. If you have chronic pelvic pain and your periods are very painful and full of clots, get checked. Even my neighborhood gynecologist managed to diagnose me with it.
