Girl, just do it fat. Don’t wait until you’ve lost enough weight. You’re worthy of taking up the space that you fill. Live your life now. Don’t wait for some future version of yourself that you think will be more deserving. You have every right to pursue your passions and dreams just as you are today. Your worth isn’t tied to a number on a scale or the size of your clothes; it is inherent in who you are. You’re allowed to be seen, heard, and celebrated in whatever body you inhabit right now. Don’t let anyone or anything convince you for too long. So go out. Do it fat! Wear the clothes you love, pursue the opportunities that excite you, and live unapologetically. There’s no reason to put off living the life that you want, waiting for a moment that you’re not even sure will come. You deserve to be happy and fulfilled just as you are, and the world needs you exactly as you are today. Everything good that has ever happened to you, happened in this body. Girl, just do it fat.

People straight up do not realize that part of the reason manufacturing is not returning to the United States in massive waves is because we have things like “OSHA” and “environmental laws” and “minimum wages.”

It’s not even just about fair wages. It’s literally about the fact that you can’t dump industrial waste in a river here anymore.

Our cheap goods are so cheap because South American and Asians environments are being destroyed so you can buy a $40 pair of shoes every 3 months.

Cutting granite countertops has lead to a rapid increase in silicosis in the lungs out in California. All the working men and women in my family have died from pulmonary fibrosis. They were carpet layers, Post office workers, floor tilers. Staying safe in manufacturing jobs is annoying but also very, very expensive. Real manufacturing factories belch smoke and dust and grime that causes asthma and birth defects in surrounding communities. Everyone wants their manufacturing jobs back until they realize their kids are living directly under the Asthma Plant.

There will come a time when the workers in these countries rise up and demand better and things will start to even out, but if you want to honestly “do your part,” you gotta stop buying cheap shit for no reason.

Not every event needs to be celebrate with a baseball cap or a coozie or a t shirt or a keychain. Not every wall in the house has to have a picture or a cute phrase on it. The knickknacks are killing people.

Yep!

individual buying habits will not change this the companies already produce way more than they sell it’s so cheqp for them to make there’s no penalty for overproducing the consumers are the not the problem the suppliers are manufacturing the demand

Y’all I want to throw massive kudos out to the Roger Williams Park Zoo for a choice they made today: rather than joining in on a GenAI trend all the zoos are doing right now, they chose to support and spotlight an artist on their staff!

The big thing right now is these GenAI “figurine toys” of zookeepers or zoo management. And instead they shared a version drawn by one of their staff!

Go give them some love, if you’re on FB. Too many zoos are really getting into GenAI and just whitewashing the climate change / copyright issues that come with it, so I want this zoo to get as much positive feedback as we can muster for making a better choice.

A drawn image of a "toy" figurine of a zookeeper. The keeper is in work clothes holding a rake with a macaw on her shoulder. the other items that come with her are in separate bubbles and include a radio, a hat, a bucket, and a water bottle. the text screenshot alongside the image reads: Wanted to hop on this fun trend without using AI! Thanks to one of our very talented staff members for hand-drawing our Zookeeper starter pack! 💙 #starterpacknoai Check out her art on IG @hollymaedesigns 🎨ALT

Not my image, not part of the repository (so not available to use). But let’s celebrate a business promoting their own artists instead of using AI!

I went to one of my favorite places yesterday: Garden in the Woods in Framingham, MA. Every spring they have a special opening day just for members. Ordinarily I would have expected it to be busy, but surprise snow and a dreary, rainy day made most people not want to take a walk in the woods. Not me, I love that shit! I had the 2 miles of trails mostly to myself. In addition to all the lovely things above, I identified a pine warbler chipping away deep on the ridge trail. It's only my second time seeing one! Adding that to seeing a woodcock's courtship flight for the first time this week, it's been a very good bird week for me.

I submit these spring delights to @geopsych for the scavenger hunt.

Okay this is gong to sound condescending on several levels but:

There's a kind of cliche about training a dog - that if you want it to always come when it's called, you should never scream at or punish it when it does. Even if you just spent twenty minutes getting increasingly panicked thinking it was dead in the woods! Even if it had been trampling through the neighbors garden! It is very important that it's direct association is 'stopping whatever super interesting thing I was doing to go back to human = being praised and rewarded'. If the association is instead being screamed at or punished, the dog will be less enthusiastic to stop whatever fun thing it's doing to run to that.

I feel like a great many people would noticably improve their own lives if they started applying the same logic to how they treated other humans.

As someone in behavior science, this is absolutely true, and very important!

When your learner doesn't know whether they'll get an aversive (uncomfortable/unpleasant) or appetitive (desirable, pleasant) consequence for performing a specific behavior, it creates stress and conflict, and often leads to the behavior breaking down.

In our industry this is known as a "Poisoned Cue." And it's the reason we generally recommend folks choosing a NEW cue when enrolling in a recall class!

Humans experience poisoned cues all the time. Imagine your mom texts you:

"Call me"

Nothing else, just the text. And your stomach drops.

But why? She might want to tell you she bought you tickets to your favorite concert, or that she wants to drop off some cookies! What reason would you have to assume you're in trouble? Because if even ONCE that kind of text resulted in a negative experience, THAT is what your mind will conjure up first. And that is why we want to be very careful NOT to accidentally mix reinforcement with punishment, especially for important behaviors like recall which we may need to use in situations regarding safety.

And there's scientific evidence to support it!
