Arthur Griffiths (footballer, born 1885)

Arthur Edwin Griffiths (1885 – 1944) was an English footballer who played in the Football League for Oldham Athletic and Stoke.

Career

Griffiths was born in Stoke-upon-Trent and joined Stoke from Hartshill in 1904. He made his debut for Stoke at the age of 20 and scored his first goal against Everton on 3 April 1906. When Stoke went out the Football League at the end of the 1907–08 due to heavy finical problems Griffiths left and signed for Second Division side Oldham Athletic. After scoring just 4 goals for the "Latics" in 1908–09 he returned to Stoke and in 1909–10 he had a prolific season in front of goal scoring 38 goals in all competitions. He could not maintain his run in front of goal however and in the next two seasons he scored 13 goals. He left in 1913 to play for Welsh side Wrexham.

Arthur Griffiths (author)

Arthur George Frederick Griffiths (9 December 1838 – 24 March 1908) was a prison administrator and author who published more than 60 books during his lifetime. He was also a military historian who wrote extensively about the wars of the 19th century, and was for a time military correspondent for The Times newspaper.

His later accounts of crime and punishment in England were "sensational and grotesque", designed to appeal to the baser fascinations of his Victorian readers. Their success led him to write mystery crime novels such as Fast and Loose, published in 1885.

Arthur Griffiths (footballer, born 1879)

Arthur Griffiths (born 16 March 1879) was a professional footballer who played for Bristol Rovers and Notts County.

Playing as a full-back, Griffiths joined Bristol Rovers (then known as Bristol Eastville Rovers) in 1897 from Lozells. During his first two seasons Rovers played in both the Birmingham & District League and the professional section of the Western League, before becoming founder members of the Southern League in 1899. He went on to play 105 games for Rovers in the Southern League, scoring once, before joining Football League First Division side Notts County in January 1904.

Arthur Alexander Griffiths (23 April 1908 – 1995) was a Welsh footballer who played in the Football League for Newport County, Rochdale, Stoke City and Torquay United.

Career

Griffiths was born in Tonypandy had a normadic career which started with Barry Town. He then joined Football League Third Division South side Torquay United and then Newport County before returning to Barry. After a spell at Cheltenham Town he returned to Barry again and then went to Northern Ireland to play for Newry Town and Glentoran. He returned to England to play for Rochdale and after scoring five goals in 14 matches he attracted the attention of First Division Stoke City but he played just four matches for Stoke before breaking his leg, ending his career.
