Johns Hopkins

Johns Hopkins (May 19, 1795 – December 24, 1873) was an American entrepreneur, abolitionist and philanthropist of 19th-century Baltimore, Maryland.

His bequests founded numerous institutions bearing his name, most notably Johns Hopkins Hospital, and Johns Hopkins University (including its academic divisions such as Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health).

A biography entitled Johns Hopkins: A Silhouette written by his cousin, Helen Hopkins Thom, was published in 1929 by the Johns Hopkins University Press.

Early life

Johns Hopkins was born on May 19, 1795. He was one of eleven children born to Samuel Hopkins (1759–1814) of Crofton, Maryland, and Hannah Janney (1774–1864), of Loudoun County, Virginia. His home was Whitehall, a 500-acre (two km²) tobacco plantation in Anne Arundel County. His first name was inherited from his grandfather Johns Hopkins who received his first name when his mother Margaret Johns married Gerard Hopkins.

Johns Hopkins Hospital

The Johns Hopkins Hospital is the teaching hospital and biomedical research facility of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, located in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. It was founded using money from a bequest by philanthropist Johns Hopkins. The Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine are the founding institutions of modern American medicine and are the birthplace of numerous traditions including rounds, residents and housestaff. Many medical specialties were formed at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, including neurosurgery, by Harvey Cushing; cardiac surgery by Alfred Blalock;pediatrics and child psychiatry, by Leo Kanner.

The Johns Hopkins Hospital is widely regarded as one of the world's greatest hospitals. It was ranked by U.S. News & World Report as the best overall hospital in America for 21 consecutive years (1991–2011). In 2012 it was briefly supplanted by the Massachusetts General Hospital, but regained the top position in 2013, before moving to third place in 2014.

Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore Metro Subway station)

The Johns Hopkins Hospital Metro Subway Station is the final of 14 stops along the Baltimore Metro Subway line. It is identified as "Johns Hopkins Hospital" as opposed to simply "Johns Hopkins" to distinguish the location from the many other locations in Baltimore associated with Johns Hopkins University, though the hospital is currently the only such location with a rail station.

The station is one of two stops in the third phase of the Baltimore Metro, having opened in 1995. The Johns Hopkins Hospital Metro Subway Station has two street-level entrances, and an entrance to the hospital that bypasses the street.

Interior shots of the 1997 Homicide: Life on the Street episode titled "Subway" were filmed here (exteriors were shot at the Shot Tower stop). The station signs were replaced with signs for a fictional "Inner Harbor" stop.
