Mahasamund district

Mahasamund District is an administrative district in Chhattisgarh state in eastern India. The city of Mahasamund is the district headquarters. Mahasamund District is bounded by Raipur District - Gariyaband District - Baloda Bazar District -Raigarh District of Chhattisgarh state and Bargarh District and Nuapada District of Odisa state.

Geography

Mahasamund District covers an area of 3902.39 km² in the central eastern part of the Chhattisgarh. The district lies between 20°47' to 21°31'30" latitude and 82°00' and 83°15'45" longitude, surrounded by Raigarh District and Raipur District of Chhattisgarh and Nuapara District and Bargarh District of Orissa.

Granite rocks can be found in the Bagbahra, Basna and Pithora region. Rocks are predominantly limestone of the Chhattisgarh group contemporary to the Cuddapah group of the Upper Pre-Cambrian age, consisting of limestone layers, shale, sandstone, or quartzite. Neo-granite, dolerite, and quartz in intrusive forms are also found in the district. Hence there is a great scope of intense mining activity.

Mahasamund

Mahasamund is a city in Mahasamund District and biggest Municipal Council in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. The city is divided into 34 wards and four zones and it is the largest city in the Trans-Mahanadi Area. It is also the administrative headquarters of Mahasamund District and part of the proposed new Municipal Corporation, along with Dhamtari, Birgaon, and Charoda. The present Mayor (Nagar Palika) is Mr.Pavan Patel. People of this area demanding to create new Revenue Division of Mahasamund Division Sambhag (Revenue Division) comprising Mahasamund District, Gariaband District and Baloda Bazar District.

Geography

Mahasamund is located at 21°06′N 82°06′E / 21.1°N 82.1°E / 21.1; 82.1. It has an average elevation of 318 metres (1043 feet). Mahasamund is 56 km South-East of Raipur on the junction of National Highway 6 and National Highway 217 close to the Mahanadi River. Mahasamund city is an important station on the Raipur-Vizag rail route. Mahasamund and Raipur is the only district headquarter city which is very close to the Chhattisgarh New Capital Naya Raipur.
