How electronic textbook access has impacted upon degree apprenticeship provision
Rising textbook costs have been highlighted as an issue for students in higher education (HE), particularly in North America. Less is known about the costs and forms in which books are available to students in higher education in Europe and specifically in Ireland. This is despite significant moves towards openly licensed books as a potential response via established open access publishing platforms. This research sought to address a gap in the scholarly understanding of textbook usage and the potential of open alternatives in Ireland. We present the results of an analysis of the accessibility, cost and licensing of textbooks in Ireland taking one higher education institution as a case study. We report here on the findings of phases one and two of this study, including the retail prices of over 500 books, the formats they are available in and those that are in the public domain. The next phase of this study involved the design of research instruments to use with staff and students as participants in research. These instruments were designed, with reference to the research literature on Open Education Resources (OER), such as Wiley's 5 Rs of OER, to examine the current usage and perception of educational textbooks with the overarching aim of determining the relevance of digital open textbooks in the Irish context.
This study reports findings from a year-long pilot study during which 991 students in 9 core courses in the Virginia State University School of Business replaced traditional textbooks with openly licensed books and other digital content. The university made a deliberate decision to use open textbooks that were copyrighted under the Creative Commons license. This decision was based on the accessibility and flexibility in the delivery of course content provided by open textbooks. More students accessed digital open ...

This dataset includes the results of a survey carried out in 2018 on e-textbook use by students at the University of Sussex Business School.<br><b>Article abstract</b>The Library has provided several e-textbooks to undergraduate and postgraduate modules within the University of Sussex Business School. The primary motivation for this has been the requirement to provide access to essential readings in a climate where UK universities are shying away from recommending student purchase of textbooks. In this qualitative and quantitative analysis of students' use of e-textbooks, we will explore to what extent their needs are being met. We will examine whether behavioural change is taking place in the way students approach their reading and identify any perceived barriers in the use of e-textbooks. We will also discuss whether the current models of delivery are fit for purpose and whether they constitute a sustainable model for libraries.<br>

The affordability of, and accessibility to, lower cost course resources such as textbooks and supplementary materials in higher education is a growing concern in the United States. Currently, the process of textbook adoption has been left mostly unregulated at the federal, state, and university levels (Hill, 2015). In traditional settings, ultimately, the university selects the required textbooks and students are required to purchase them. In economic theory, this is referred to as the Principal Agent Problem

There is significant interest among institutions of higher education in the potential of digital textbooks to enhance student learning and to address issues arising from textbook affordability. Innovations in digital textbook design and delivery infrastructure and the emergence of exemplary practices from early adopters signal that digital reading may be a practical alternative to print. Less well understood, however, is students’ experience of textbook affordability, their experience of print and digital textbook utilization, and factors that might influence their acceptance of digital textbooks. This paper explores the results of a semester-long eTextbook research project at a Canadian college and shares six suggestions grounded in student feedback. Les établissements d’enseignement supérieur s’intéressent considérablement au potentiel des manuels numériques pour améliorer l’apprentissage des étudiants et pour répondre au problème du coût élevé des manuels. Les innovations dans le...

In today's world of digital technology, the wider and faster ways of publishing e-books by anybody makes more information to be easily accessible in both online and downloaded format. It is no longer news that various websites are now hosting many Electronic-Book materials in larger volume than to what the biggest library in the world could host. This is a booming business for revenue generation in many countries of the world. This paper examines the benefits of EBooks publishing, reduction of paper in circulation, and its implication to learning through plagiarism and fatigue. Three questions and hypotheses were designed, formulated, and tested. This study employed a descriptive research method that involves 100 respondents using a survey instruments administered to the selected subjects. The completed questionnaires were analyzed using inferential statistics of chi-square in order to accept or reject the hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level of significance. Findings revealed that lecturers and students do not have access to electronic-books in the college to improve their academic performance. One of the recommendations made is that, all institution bodies concerned should device a means of encouraging lecturers to publish eBooks and check students plagiarism as this is one of the issues of electronic books.
