ince 1980 literature has generated great interest in a foreign or second language class. (Rush: 73) Some instructors consider that incorporation of literature in the language classes will interrupt to achieve the goals of target language. Actually adding literature in the language classes makes the class interesting and creates an effective, learner centered environment. The purpose of incorporating poetry in language classes is not to teach the learners to write or appreciate poetry, but to involve them to use their language skills in an active and creative way for the development of their communicative competence. This article is an endeavor to focus on the value of incorporating poetry in the EFL/ESL classes. This article first considers the potential value of incorporating poetry in a language class. It forms some criteria for the selection of poems in a language class. The article then highlights different approaches to introduce poetry in an EFL/ESL class. Finally, the article exemplifies some useful techniques to apply poetry in the language classrooms.

Language learning through literature dates to the teaching of classical languages, with the grammar-translation method. Years after the consensus on the limitations of this method, the use of literature in language classes is still very similar to that of those times. Today, studies such as those by Duff and Maley (1990) and Babaee and Yahya (2014) point to a more conversational use of literature, emphasizing its various cognitive, cultural, and communicational aspects. The purpose of this research is to survey the theories that support this communicative use of literature in the classroom and, in the end, to analyze data on the experience of putting such views into practice. The results show that teachers can help learners improve their language skills by using the vast possibilities of literature while talking about existential, cultural, historical, and poetic themes of literary texts.
