The frequent and protracted use of video games with serious personal, family and social consequences is no longer just a pleasant pastime and could lead to mental and physical health problems. Although there is no official recognition of video game addiction on the Internet as a mild mental health disorder, further scientific research is needed.

In the 2000s, online games became popular, while internet game addiction studies appeared, outlining the negative consequences of excessive gaming, the prevalence and associated risk factors. The study cited shows that the context of the individual is a significant factor that marks the dividing line between excessive gaming and gaming addiction, and the context of a game can get is important for players, depending on their life situation and gaming preferences. In this review article it is emphasized more on how addiction of internet games occurs, causes, clinical diagnosis, how to reduce it.

This study examined problematic gaming behavior and depressive tendencies among people who play different types of online-games. Other game-related variables were investigated to determine if other differences between three game types could be established. Participants in the current research (n = 468) can be classified into three independent groups. Subjected users either solely played massive multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) or they preferred online-ego-shooters (OES) or real-time-strategy games (RTS). Results indicate that MMORPG users show more often problematic gaming behavior, depressive tendencies and lower self-esteem compared to users playing other online-games. MMORPG users reported to playing significantly more often in order to escape from real-life problems, which might be a valuable coping strategy but might also lead to problematic gaming behavior.

Playing digital games is an increasingly popular form of media entertainment which may be easy to get absorbed in the competition, but what happens when it is addictive? Adolescents are more vulnerable to Internet-related addiction comparing with most areas of society, due to psychological and developmental features, the easy access to the Internet with a movable device, and the positive hope in expectation of mobile gaming. Video game addiction is an impulse control disorder, similar to gambling. Video game addiction leads to poorer mental health and cognitive functioning and increased emotional difficulties, such as enhanced depression and anxiety, as well as more social isolation. There are certain incidents of youngsters killing their family members when they try to stop their addiction to the game. Parents can motivate their children to adopt healthy gaming habits instead of mobile gaming.
