In this investigation, I will analize the idea of the hermaphrodite, categorized by Sahagún in his work Historia General de las cosas de la Nueva España, as a kind of bad woman, considering that in the sixteenth century medical studies about individuals with both biological features had barely begun to be done. It seeks to generate a new discussion regarding how homosexuality was perceived by the nahuas, how this action was projected as a transgression and to compare feminine and the masculine because the conceptualization of each one generated, due to hierarchical differences, a distinct rejection/tolerance contex for each of them. This will be done through the analysis of masculinity and femininity construction related to war and fertility in the mexica society and througt the analysis of teotipos pursued as man and woman ideals.

The chapter “Sexuality in Tenochtitlan in the Early Sixteenth Century” of Miriam López Hernández first looks at the primary sources available for the study of sexuality in Tenochtitlan. In these sources were included paintings, sculptures, buildings, prayer books, legal codes, letters, chronicles, and judicial documents. Among all the sources of information, the work directed by the Franciscan Fray Bernardino de Sahagún is noted as the most prominent. It then addresses Nahua principles of sexuality, which were linked to fertility, pleasure, and moderation in sexual activities. When the principle of moderation was not followed, the consequences could be fatal for the community. The chapter then examines differences between social classes in regard to how people should conduct their sexual lives. It looks at different sexual practices, paying particular attention to attitudes toward these in moral discourses and texts written shortly after the Spanish conquest. In particular, it provides abundant information about adultery, prostitution, gender identity, and same-sex relations. Finally, discourses aimed at women exalted the value placed on virginity before marriage and fidelity to one’s spouse afterwards. By contrast, discourses addressed to men acclaimed the early self-discipline that would be rewarded with a successful marriage and beautiful children.

EnglishWith this work we want to confirm that women have been subjected to sexual violence by men over the centuries, and gender violence is not a reality that has arisen in our days. The behaviors committed by me...
