The Geoarchaeology and Phytolith Research Laboratory of the Maritime Cultures Research Institute
(MARI), based at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, is a fundamental research center that explores how
people in maritime or fluvial environments interacted with their physical environment and each other.
In the framework of an agreement with Urban.Brussels, the public service responsible for cultural
heritage in the Brussels Capital Region, we are opening a call for a 8 months postdoctoral position in
urban geoarchaeology focusing on fluvial and alluvial contexts (more specifically, those associated with
the Senne river) OR/AND on soil and sediment micromormorphology.
Key responsibilities
• The geoarchaeological study of sites under investigation
• Taking an active part in the project (attending regular meetings) and work closely with all
members of the team
Selection criteria
Essential
• PhD in Archaeology or Archaeological Sciences
• Profound knowledge of, and skills in, alluvial geoarchaeology OR/AND soil and sediment
micromorphology
• Motivation and willingness to bridge the boundaries between the humanities and natural
sciences
• Team player with excellent communication skill
• English Language Level B2 or higher
