Amerıkalı Diplomat Amiral Bristol'ın Gözlemleri: Osmanlı'nın Çöküşü Cumhuriyet'in Kuruluşu
The immediate aftermath of World War I coincided with the tenure of Rear Admiral Mark L. Bristol as the US High Commissioner in the Ottoman Empire and later the Turkish Republic (1919–27). A key diplomat, Admiral Bristol’s observations and recommendations helped to shape US foreign policy in the Ottoman Empire, out of which the modern Middle East emerged. His actions also laid the foundations of the strategic partnership between Turkey and the US, from the Cold War years through to the 21st century. In reporting and examining Bristol’s official correspondence to the State Department, Hakan Özoğlu paints an alternative picture of Turkey and the transition period from empire to nation state.

In her new book, Turkish-American Relations (1800-1952): Between the Stars, Stripes and the Crescent, Associate Prof. Şuhnaz Yılmaz of the Department of International Relations at Koç University, aims to take the reader on a fascinating journey along the intricate history of Turkish-American relations. The book critically examines how Turkish-American relations evolved from those of strangers into an occasionally troubled, yet resilient alliance. Through the extensive use of Turkish, American and British archival documents and numerous private paper and manuscript collections, the book examines Turkish-American relations from 1800 to 1952, starting with the earliest contacts and ending with the institutionalization of the alliance after Turkey’s entry into NATO. The book aims to provide a better understanding of the significant issues pertaining to Turkish-American relations, such as the impact of international developments on foreign policy decisions, the role of key figures and organizations in shaping the relations, the interaction of political, economic, cultural and military factors in policy formation, and the importance of mutual perceptions in shaping actual relations. This highly interdisciplinary study situated at the intersection of diplomatic history, foreign policy analysis and international relations, not only enhances our knowledge of Turkish-American relations for the period of 1800-1952, but also provides valuable insights for the relations during the Cold War and its aftermath, with significant implications for a turbulent region in constant transformation and change.
By analyzing Turkey’s relations with Great Britain and the US in a period of drastic change (1929–47), this article argues that the origins of the shift in the orientation of Turkish foreign policy from Pax Britannica to Pax Americana not only affected the perceptions and strategies of relevant powers, but also entailed a dynamic interactive process. It asserts that the transition featured aspects of significant change, as well as continuity for the region. It demonstrates that while attempting to bandwagon with the relatively stronger naval, military, and economic partner, Turkey also endeavored to pursue a more autonomous foreign policy at various stages of this transition.

In 1947, a British diplomat conducted a visit to the places travelled rarely by local and foreign travelers, The Black Sea Coast between Samsun and Giresun in the North, the Malatya-Erzincan train line in the South, the Sivas-Erzurum train route in the West, Erzincan-Şebinkarahisar- Giresun in the East, and reported what he saw to London. In secret report, there provided military, political, ethnographic and historical information. In rapidly changing life conditions in the world, this secret report, which was written seventy years ago, set us on a historical journey. In the year, which the secret report was written, Turkey preferred being part of Western bloc in newly established bipolar international system and British diplomats were trying to understand how Britain and the Soviet Union were looked at in the regions they visited. In the secret report, there were also striking observations regarding the activities of the newly formed opposition party (Democratic Party) in Anatolia,...
"Studies in Turkish-American Relations in Atatürk’s Turkey", George Harris and Bilge Criss, eds., Brill Publishers, 2009, pp. 1-14.
The origins of Turkish-American relations can be traced all the way back to the visit of the George Washington to Istanbul in 1800 and to the signing of the first bilateral treaty of commerce in 1830. Since the very limited initial contacts, this resilient relationship has witnessed two world wars, the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the rise of the young Turkish republic, the transition from the balance o fpower politics to the bipolarity of the Cold war era, the challenges of the post-Cold war and post-September 11 international context, and numerous ups and downs in bilateral relations.

Generative AI, much like the Force in Star Wars, wields significant power, capable of immense good or potential harm depending on its application. This editorial indicates the dual nature of generative AI within educational contexts, drawing parallels to the light and dark sides of the Force. Generative AI's proficiency in language manipulation positions it as a transformative tool in education, yet its influence must be managed wisely. The evolution of AI mirrors the advent of personal computers, suggesting a future where individuals may have personal AI assistants tailored to their needs. This speculative future poses critical questions about the balance of force between humans and AI. This editorial along with articles published in the special issue urge critical reflection on our current path and the decisions that will shape the future of AI in education.

How prehistoric farming became established in Northern Europe, a region that supported dense populations of hunter-gathererfishers, has concerned archaeologists for over a century. Through analysis of the organic residues recovered from over 1,000 vessels dating across the transition to farming, we found unexpected consistency in the use of aquatic foods at odds with prevailing narrative of large-scale demographic and economic change. We argue that the ability of farming groups to adapt to their environment by learning hunter-gatherer-fisher practices, combined with dairying, was key to their northerly expansion. We also provide evidence of dairy use by hunter-gatherers which we attribute to long-distance exchange with farmers, implying a much greater degree of interaction and cooperation than previously described.
