Middle Harbour is the setting for the Renault House / Warmbrite House, 1969, Harry Seidler. Harry Seidler & Associates, Castle Cove NSW. Castle Cove attracted a select group of modernist architects including Bruce Rickard (1965), Hugh Buhrich (1968) and in 1969, Harry Seidler. Harry Seidler & Associates was commissioned by Warmbrite Pty Ltd / Madame Jeanne Renault to design and construct a two-bedroom house at 101 Neerim Road.

This paper presents project-based research focusing on regeneration for sustainable tourism in a rural village in China, namely Dongjingyu Village, Yuyang Township, Ji County. The research by design approach was applied, introducing to the Chinese context the concept of landscape services, with a particular focus on tradition and the evolution of historical landscape element (HLE) categories and types, whose value is determined by a qualifying relationship between human beings and the environment. The aim was to regenerate and transform the village for uses that are suitable to contemporary ways of coexistence between villagers and the growing tourism industry. Although there are partial limitations to the application of participatory methodologies in the Chinese context, the authors opted for a methodological approach based on research by design in order to foster dialogue and create awareness for both government authorities and citizens regarding potential design solutions, which were determined based on landscape patterns and not only land use. Two outcomes were achieved: (1) the research working package might lead to experimental actions, including changes to land-use models, administration capabilities and considerations of feasibility; and (2) the entire work package can be applied to and implemented in other rural villages in China. Moving beyond environmental scenarios, the outcomes provide evidence that participation and social inclusion might have a deeper and more positive impact on rural village regeneration.

New building projects have increasingly been offering publicly accessed outdoor spaces, transforming the interfaces between the building and the city into soft edges. This approach is especially evident in the latest projects in Copenhagen. This design apprehension is considered to be in relation to the increasing emphasis on public space, changing roles of private and public entities in the production and maintenance of space, the urban policies of Copenhagen as well as the inclusive approach of the designers. The study aims to evaluate this new kind of architectural design approach where the boundaries between the city and the building blur and the edge turns into a public space serving to a wider public. The study examines five projects from Copenhagen (BLOX/DAC, Maersk Tower, Axel Towers, CopenHill and Red Cross Volunteer House), based on the criteria derived from the urban policies of Copenhagen (that owes significantly to Jan Gehl) targeted towards 2025 to analyze the spatial configuration of the edges as well as the success of the public spaces introduced within the projects. The results of the analyses demonstrate different patterns of publicness in different projects as well as in different parts of the same project. Nonetheless, the projects in question can be considered as successful soft edges offering vivid urban life by blurring the boundaries between the building and the city.

LSAAP(L) is the first Laboratory of this characteristics developed in Spain. Format and contents are thought by Mª Auxiliadora Gálvez to conform a pedagogical and research project whose description is registered at the G.R of the Intellectual Property at the “Comunidad de Madrid”. LSAAP(L) is hosted at the E.P.S Faculty of Architecture, San Pablo C.E.U University in Madrid, Spain.

The Laboratory works with somatic experience as a way to develop pedagogy of architecture and landscaping based on self-experience in space and environment. We could say that the work is related to Embodied Cognition in architecture and landscape.

Il Grand Hotel al Campo dei fiori, presso Varese, progettato da Giuseppe Sommaruga a partire dal 1908 e inaugurato nel 1912, è una delle più interessanti architetture del modernismo italiano. Nonostante si tratti di un complesso noto e più volte oggetto di studio, anche in ragione del degrado e dell’incuria della situazione attuale, la ricchezza e la complessità della sua architettura consentono ulteriori riflessioni. L’articolo intende quindi proporre una nuova lettura che lega l’intervento alle dinamiche delle trasformazioni territoriali, le scelte estetiche ai contenuti  funzionali e costruttivi, gli interventi artificiali alle qualità naturali del luogo, nonché a una moderna idea di paesaggio di cui Sommaruga è interprete di sicuro rilievo.

The Grand Hotel at the Campo dei Fiori, near Varese, designed by Giuseppe Sommaruga in 1908 and inaugurated in 1912, is one of the most interesting architectures of Italian modernism. Although it is a building well known and repeatedly studied (also because of the current situation of degradation and neglect), the rich complexity of its architecture allows further reflections. Therefore this article intends to propose a new reading that links the realization to the dynamics of territorial changes, aesthetic choices to functional and constructive contents, artificial solutions to the natural qualities of the place, as well as to an overall idea of modern landscape greatly interpreted by Sommaruga.

Sebastian Irarràzaval explains his peculiar and idiosyncratic project as an adaptive response to the place and its conditions, hinting however to a more stratified ambiguity, a duplicity readable on many levels and already contained in the title of the project, as well as in the settlement solution that it captures with extreme synthesis.
