The exportation of ceramic wares from Mayen to the area that is now known as the Netherlands seems to have decreased in the 6th and 7th centuries. 1 An interesting question concerns the supply of Mayen quern stones during the same period: did this also decline or did it remain constant? The distribution of these quern stones is mapped in
order to make a comparison with the presumed decline of ceramic imports from Mayen in this period.

The Dutch typo-chronology for tephrite querns from the Eifel region is rather outdated. No oversight of Dutch finds is published since 1985. Extensive research in the Eifel region has since led to a new and much better dated typo-chronology. It is about time we start using this typo-chronology in the Netherlands. This will not only make our finds
compatible with the typochronology of the source of our tephrite querns, it will also open up new paths for research into the use of the different types, regional differences, chronological developments, exchange networks, ritual depositions etc. Besides, we shouldn’t forget about the runners. They are an integral part of a quern, but for some
reason they are mostly neglected by archaeologists.

Castles of the Eifel Region
The Eifel is a region in Germany that boasts some of the loveliest fairy tale towns and medieval castles in the country. Overlooked by most foreign travelers, this region is one of Germany’s best kept secrets. The Eifel is largely rural and quiet, characterized by agriculture, farmland, and woodlands. Sprinkled between pastures of grazing cows and thick forests, you’ll see tiny towns, in which the most prominent buildings are the churches.

The Eifel is also a low mountain range in eastern Belgium and western Germany. In Germany, the Eifel region borders Belgium, the Moselle River, the Rhine River. If you’re looking at a map, it encompasses the area between Aachen, Trier and Koblenz, in the states of Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia. Geologically, this region was shaped by volcanic activity. Although the last volcano erupted about 10,000 years ago, evidence of the Eifel’s turbulent past can be seen in the crater lakes, called maars, that pepper the Vulkaneifel landscape.
