moreInternational funding is an important source of financing for biodiversity projects and, by extension, to the financing of protected areas. This study presents some systematic knowledge about the extent of international aid for projects with links to biodiversity conservation. The study uses a new dataset to analyze aid globally with AidData (2000-2011) and OECD Stat Extracts (2004-2013). Results reveal important donors such as Japan and Germany, while China, Brazil and Vietnam receive the largest volume of biodiversity ODA. Furthermore, this study presents the importance of multilateral aid institutions as Global Environmental Facility (GEF) and World Bank. The paper also compares biodiversity ODA to ODA for other development sectors and concludes that biodiversity, as well as fisheries and tourism, receive significantly smaller amounts of ODA compared to agriculture, education, health or water. Our results provide an important measure of international conservation funding in order to contribute with the effectiveness of biodiversity aid.
