AMAZING UNTOLD STORIES OF INDIA’S FIRST WAR OF INDEPENDENCE 1857
[The first fact we must remember about this great liberation war is that though known as 1857 war of independence but it continued till the end 1859 steadily. This commemorative piece based on the contemporary documents appeared on of the 150th anniversary (2007) of India’s first great war of liberation, in English, Hindi and Urdu. The following revised version is being released on the 164th commemoration [2021] of this great liberation War. The primary sources quoted in this essay are available with the author which were collected from different parts of the world in over a period of more than a decade. Another aspect author wants to highlight is that in this narrative mainly those incidents/individuals have been covered in which revolutionaries laid down their lives.]

The focus of this project is on both the nature and consequences, for India, of the Indian Mutiny of 1857. Classic British historians have offered a clear simplistic view that events should be classed as a Mutiny. However, I focus on the debate between the Indian historians that emerged in the twentieth century. I conclude that the events of 1857 must be characterised initially as a military Mutiny, but later as a collective conservative rebellion for the protection of religion, and the rejection of British rule.

I go on to discuss the short term effects, looking at the social and military reform undertaken by the British, which represents how their attitudes to the culture and native peoples of India was shifted by the uprising against British rule. This shift moves away from legislative reforms imposed from above, to focus on shifting young Indian’s attitudes gradually and naturally, through Victorian style education. Furthermore I discuss the short term reorganisation of the Indian militaries, and how the events in 1857 led to the development of a material race ideology. Lastly, I discuss how the Rebellion, and its consequences led to a national sentiment developing, which leads to the onset of the early Independence Movement.

10 मई 1857, दिन रविवार को छिड़े भारत के प्रथम स्वतंत्रता संग्राम में देश के हिंदुओं, मुसलमानों और सिखों ने मिलकर विश्व की सबसे बड़ी साम्राज्यवादी ताक़त को चुनौती दी थी।  इस अभूतपर्व एकता ने अंग्रेज़ शासकों को इस बात का अच्छी तरह अहसास करा दिया था कि अगर भारत पर राज करना है तो हर हालत में देश के सब से बड़े दो धार्मिक समुदायों; हिंदू-मुसलमान के बीच सांप्रदायिक बँटवारे को अमल में लाना होगा और देश के इन दो बड़े धार्मिक संप्रदायों के बीच दूरी पैदा कराने के लिए भरसक प्रयास करने होंगे। यही कारण था कि संग्राम की समाप्ति के बाद इंग्लैंड में बैठे भारतीय मामलों के मंत्री (लॉर्ड  वुड) ने भारत में अंग्रेज़ी राज के मुखिया (लॉर्ड एल्गिन) को यह निर्देश दिया कि अगर भारत पर राज करना है तो हिंदुओं और मुसलमानों को लड़वाना होगा और ‘‘हम लोगों को वैसा सब कुछ करना चाहिए, ताकि उन सब में एक साझी भावना का विकास ना हो।’’
इस दर्शन को अमल में लाने के लिए गोरे शासकों और उनके भारतीय चाटुकारों ने यह सिद्धांत पेश किया कि हिंदु और मुसलमान हमेशा से ही दो अलग क़ौमें रही हैं। सच तो यह है कि सांप्रदायिक राजनीति को हवा देना और भारतीय समाज को धर्मों के आधार पर बाँटना अंग्रेज़ो की एक मजबूरी बन गया था। 1857 के स्वतंत्रता संग्राम में, जिसको अंग्रेज़ शासको ने ‘फ़ौजी बग़ावत’ का नाम दिया था, हिंदुओं-मुसलमानों-सिखों के व्यापक हिस्से एकजुट होकर ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी के शासन के खि़लाफ इतनी बहादुरी से लड़े और कुर्बानियां दीं कि फ़िरंगी शासन विनाश के कगार पर पहुंच गया। हालाकि अंग्रेज़ जीत गए लेकिन यह गद्दारों और जासूसो द्वारा रचे गए षड़यंत्रों की वजह से ही संभव हो सका।
इस महान स्वतंत्रता संग्राम की यह सच्चाई किसी से छुपी नहीं हैं कि इसका नेतृत्व नानासाहब, दिल्ली के बहादुरशाह ज़फ़र, मौलवी अहमदशाह, तात्या टोपे, खा़न बहादुरखान, रानी लक्ष्मीबाई, हज़रत महल, अज़ीमुल्लाह खा़न और शहज़ादा फिरोज़शाह ने मिलकर किया। इस संग्राम में मौलवी, पंडित, ग्रंथी, ज़मींदार, किसान, व्यापारी, वकील, नौकर, महिलाएं, छात्र और सभी जातियों-धर्मों के लोग भी शामिल हुए और जानों की कुर्बानियां दीं।
हिंदू-मुस्लिम सांप्रदायिकता के मौजूदा झंडाबरदारों को इस ऐतिहासिक सच्चाई से अवगत कराना ज़रूरी हैं कि, 11 मई, 1857 को जिस क्रांतिकारी सेना ने मुसलमान बहादुर शाह ज़फ़र को भारत का स्वतंत्र शासक घोषित किया था, उसमें 70 प्रतिशत से भी ज्यादा सैनिक हिंदू थे। बहादुरशाह ज़फ़र को बादशाह बनाने में नाना साहब, तात्या टोपे और लक्ष्मीबाई ने महत्तवपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई थी।
1857 के संग्राम से संबंधित समकालीन दस्तावेज़ देश के चप्पे-चप्पे पर घटी ऐसी दास्तानों से भरे पड़ें हैं, जहां मुसलमान, हिंदू और सिख इस बात की परवाह किए बिना, कि कौन नेतृत्व कर रहा है, और कितनी भारी कीमत चुकानी पड़ सकती है, एक होकर लड़े और 1857 की जंगे-आज़ादी में एक साथ प्राणों की आहुति दी। उस समय की सच्चाईयां बहुत स्पष्ट रूप से यह बताती हैं कि हिंदू-मुसलमान पृथकतावाद और दोनों संप्रदायों के बीच विद्वेष का अस्तित्व उस समय एक समस्या के रूप में मौजूद नहीं था।

This chapter examines the novels’ claim to veracity by closely reading the texts in light of their presentation of India and Indians. It identifies four primary tropes which may be seen clearly across both novels: Indians’ lack of or extravagance in clothing, their apparent love for ornamentation, the unsettling opacity of their cities, and the fanatical superstition of their religions. Though both authors had no personal experience of the Mutiny or of travel in the Indian subcontinent, the events, persons, and places they create appear premised on rich and intimate acquaintance with the same. In other words, the discursive creation of India in these novels is on the same lines as that in the popular press and on the stage: the boundaries of fact and fiction seem blurred with the extensive historical referencing to actual sites and battles of the Mutiny.

BETRAYAL OF 1857: KIN OF THOSE WHO SACRIFICED DIE IN PENURY & THOSE WHO SERVED BRITISH CONTINUE RULING INDIA
Delhi as the Capital of India and touted as the heart of India, in fact, is a heartless city. There is endless list of shameful incidents to corroborate this character of the city. This list keeps on expanding at fast rate. The latest is the news that Cyrus,  the last surviving 'prince' of the Oudh (Awadh) dynasty which ruled vast territories later known as United Province and played heroic role in India's War of Independence of 1857 died due to hunger and related issues in the vicinity of the houses of the Delhi elite including Indian rulers, diplomats, businessmen and authors.

According to press reports "the last prince of Awadh, who lived in abject penury, was found dead on September 2 (2017) in Delhi's 'Malcha Mahal', a Tughlak-era hunting lodge, tucked deep inside a patch of forest, overrun by moss and disrepair". Shockingly, the news of the death was broken by a section of the media over two months after a team of police officers found him lying motionless inside the derelict 14th century structure on last September 2.

Ali Raza popularly known as Cyrus and his sister Sakina came to Delhi with their mother, Begum Wilayat Mahal in 1970s. Begum was fighting a long battle with the Uttar Pradesh government for return of their ancestral property in Lucknow and demanding recognition for the sacrifices made by her family during the 1857 War of Independence described as Sepoy Mutiny by the British. With no solution of the problem at Lucknow Begum started camping in a first class waiting room of the New Delhi Railway Station after arriving in Delhi. However, in 1985 she was allotted 'Malcha Mahal' and a paltry monthly allowance of Rs 500 in exchange. Since then family had been staying there.

The family chose a life of isolation and rarely interacted with outsiders despite staying in the vicinity of elite of the city which included rulers of India, industrialists, diplomats, authors and administrators. The 700-year-old dilapidated 'Malcha Mahal' had no electricity, no doors, no windows and no water.
In an interview to The Indian Express in 1997, the Prince had spoken of his sister’s deep distress since their mother died, and her obsession with committing suicide. “My sister is in deep distress and since the Begum died, (she) has been wearing black. She has not combed her hair even once.” Sakina died few months ago. At the time, their mother’s ashes were being kept in a crystal vial in the middle of the large room. According to the Prince, his mother had died by consuming crushed diamonds, extracted from ornaments she never wore in 1993.
He was often seen pouring water in the blue ceramic tea set displayed on a broken table. As per the local police version the prince would wander near the forested areas in Chanakyapuri and, for the past two-three days, there was no movement which was suspicious. Police later found that he was lying dead on the floor inside his house. He was taken to a nearby government hospital (RML) for his post-mortem, where no external injuries were found on his body. There were some contact numbers found from the spot but none of them could be reached. After the mandatory wait of 72 hours when no one came to claim the body the body was handed over to Delhi Waqf Board which organized his burial at Delhi gate Cemetery on September 5.

Os Brahamanes written in Portuguese by a famous Goan personality of the nineteenth century was published in 1866 in Lisbon. It is still considered by many to be the first anti-colonial novel written in India.

Felix Maynard's Mutiny novel From Delhi to Cawnpore was written in French and published in 1858 in Paris. In the same year, it was translated into Portuguese and published in Lisbon. Here are Hindi translations of some excerpts of the novel.
