"Resumen: el objetivo de esta monografía es el estudio de las inscripciones paleohispánicas (celtibéricas e ibéricas), prestando especial atención a sus soportes. Esta perspectiva es particularmente pertinente en el análisis de inscripciones redactadas en lenguas conocidas de forma parcial, como son el ibérico y el celtibérico, pues el material empleado y la forma del soporte ‒generalmente dependiente de modelos clásicos (griegos y romanos)‒ se revela como la mejor clave para acometer su interpretación, ya que permite delimitar el contenido del texto, precisar su función comunicativa (pública o privada) y valorar la cultura epigráfica de la que forman parte. La investigación previa ha empleado este tipo de aproximación, aunque no la ha explotado en profundidad, pues se ha dedicado de forma preferente a los problemas lingüísticos.
El libro se centra en tres materiales empleados como soporte de inscripciones: piedra, bronce y cerámica; el trabajo incluye tres catálogos que reúnen los epígrafes sobre piedra, las estampillas y las téseras de hospitalidad celtibéricas.


Riassunto: scopo di quest’opera è lo studio delle iscrizioni paleohispaniche (celtiberiche e iberiche), prestando speciale attenzione ai loro supporti. Tale prospettiva di analisi è specialmente interessante in questo caso, già che gli epigrafi analizzati sono stati iscritti in “lingue frammentarie”. Perciò, il materiale impiegato e la forma del supporto (in genere dipendente da modelli classici) costituiscono un ottima chiave per la loro interpretazione, già che permettono di determinare i contenuti dei testi, di precisare la loro funzione communicativa (pubblica o privata) e di valorare la cultura epigrafica alla quale appartengono. Finora, e malgrado il suo interesse, questo metodo di studio non è stato mai applicato in proffondità dalle ricerche previe, che privilegiavano l’analisi dei problemi linguistici.
Concretamente, la monografia si occupa di tre materiali impiegati come supporti epigrafici: pietra, bronzo e ceramica. Così, lo studio si basa su tre cataloghi dove si è raccolto il materiale disponibile, che nel caso del bronzo e della ceramica, riguardano esclusivamente tesserae hospitales e bolli, rispettivamente.


Abstract: the subject of this work, as stated in the title, was Iberian and Celtiberian inscriptions on stone, bronze and ceramic. The approach, focused on the study of the support, was particularly interesting and useful as the texts were written in little known languages. The material used and the shape of the support, generally reliant on Greek and Roman models, turned out to be the best key for their interpretation, because they allow us to establish the possible contents of the inscriptions; determine whether their purpose was to serve as public or private communication and to consider the epigraphic culture they belong to as well as the uses of writing in Iberian and Celtiberian societies. Besides, the creation of catalogues with the three joint types of inscriptions (inscriptions on stone, celtiberian tesserae hospitales and stamps) has enabled us to establish typologies and has served as the basis to study their iconography. Furthermore, the direct work with inscriptions has resulted in proposals of new readings and interpretations for some of them. "

This paper examines the indications of weight engraved on the amphorae found in northern Italy and the corresponding weighting procedures. The engraved inscription (graffito) is an alternative to the painted inscription but is only occasionally adopted. However the transmitted informations are precious because well testifies, often as the only evidence, both the use or reuse of the vessels, the operations performed and the marketing systems employed. This is, for example, the case of the common wine produced between the Late Republican and the Early Imperial time, widely distributed and consumed also in Rome. Together with graffiti on amphorae this paper examines, with particular attention to the Adriatic area, also the weighting procedures used to his trade (weights, balances or steelyards) and the actions taken to adopt official instruments of measure to prevent frauds.

Il contributo prende in considerazione le indicazioni di peso graffite sulle anfore rinvenute in Nord Italia e le corrispondenti modalità di pesatura. L’iscrizione graffita rappresenta un’alternativa all’iscrizione dipinta, adottata però solo occasionalmente. Le informazioni trasmesse sono tuttavia preziose poiché ben documentano, spesso come unica testimonianza, sia l’uso o il riutilizzo dei contenitori, che le operazioni svolte e i sistemi di commercializzazione adottati. E’ questo ad esempio il caso del vino comune prodotto tra tarda età repubblicana e prima età imperiale, ampiamente diffuso e consumato anche nell’Urbe. Insieme alle iscrizioni graffite su anfora sono stati presi in considerazione, con particolare riferimento all’area adriatica, anche le modalità di pesatura legate al loro commercio (pesi, bilance o stadere) e i provvedimenti adottati per istituire misure campione e prevenire le frodi.

Raro set scrittorio da sepoltura di età romana a cremazione individuato nella necropoli romana di Monte Carru di Alghero (SS). Spunti di riflessione su analoghi ritrovamenti, in particolare un piccolo atelier di regoli mensori dal centro/nord Europa.

L'articolo presenta i risultati dello studio del materiale appartenente alla classe delle lucerne di età romana, rinvenuti nel 2012 in occasione del survey effettuato dall'Università Ca' Foscari di Venezia nel sito di Altino - loc. Ghiacciaia (Venezia).

Archaeological excavations carried out from 1982 to 1999 in the square in front of the Cathedral of Santo Stefano in Concordia Sagittaria allowed to discover a warehouse complex of the Roman period near a waterway and the via Annia.
The Roman amphorae class is the most represented. Among the more than 50 stamps were already published 21 related to Istrian Dressel 6B production and here there are the stamps of amphorae Lamboglia 2 and Dressel 6A, as well as two Dressel 6B.

Il volume, corredato da un ricco apparato fotografico a colori e in bianco e nero, accoglie il catalogo completo di tutte le testimonianze epigrafiche antiche in lingua greca e latina attualmente conservate nei Musei Civici di Treviso. Vi sono prese in esame 147 iscrizioni, vergate su supporti di diversa natura: reperti lapidei, manufatti in bronzo e oggetti di terracotta, quali anfore, lucerne, embrici e mattoni. Ogni documento epigrafico viene esaminato in una scheda che ne riporta dati tecnici, fotografia, trascrizione e commento.
L’opera è introdotta da un saggio che delinea la storia degli studi epigrafici a Treviso dal Rinascimento ai giorni nostri, ricostruendo in parallelo la genesi e la formazione della collezione civica di iscrizioni greche e latine.

Un recente “scavo” nei magazzini del museo archeologico nazionale di aquileia ha portato alla raccolta di uno straordinario corpus di pesi per bilancia, sia metallici che lapidei, molti dei quali accompagnati da diverse tipologie di iscrizioni. Le informazioni fornite dal corredo epigrafico, di carattere prettamente pratico, contribuiscono a chiarire una serie di dinamiche riguardanti il commercio al minuto. esse collocano in primis i pesi all’interno del loro originario contesto d’impiego: le piccole tabernae, i porti e i mercati. Le indicazioni ponderali, le abbreviazioni di nomi dei possessori e le cifre forse da associare alla posizione occupata dal manufatto all’interno di serie di pondera utilizzati in uno stesso luogo sono un’importante fonte di informazione sul commercio spicciolo, dove la rapidità di identificazione dell’oggetto costituiva la necessità primaria. uscendo dalle strade gremite di venditori e acquirenti, il potenziale informativo dei pesi iscritti si estende anche alla dimensione statale. i pondera examinata aquileiesi, con certificazione dell’avvenuta calibrazione sulla base dei pesi ufficiali conservati presso il tempio dei castori a roma, illuminano un altro importante tassello della fervente vita commerciale della colonia: la necessità di garanzia ed esattezza assicurata da tali manufatti, che diventano metafora della longa manus dell’Urbs.

After a long series of investigations and fortuitous findings, a recent “excavation” in the warehouses of aquileia’s archaeological museum has led to the collection of an extraordinary corpus of metallic and stone balance weights whose many of them were inscribed. the information provided by the inscriptions, which were mainly of practical nature, enable the comprehension of the ancient retail trade’s organization. in fact, indications like the weight, the owner’s names’ abbreviations and numbers (which probably show the position of the artefacts within series of pondera used in the same place), reveal how the celerity of the weight’s identification was essential in the ancient trade. in that way, the inscribed weights’ informative potential spreads to a larger reality. the pondera examinata of aquileia, whose the official weight calibration is based on the specimens kept in the temple of castor in rome, clarify another important element of the aquileia’s intense commercial life: the need of guarantee and accuracy insured by these artefacts, that become a metaphor of the rome’s longa manus.

Holztafeln fanden in der römischen Antike weite Verbreitung als Schriftträger. Nichtsdestotrotz sind materielle Überreste
von solchen Schreibtafeln bis heute vergleichsweise rar. Dies ist vor allem auf die prekären Überlieferungskonditionen
von Holz zurückzuführen. Insbesondere in Mittel- und Westeuropa sowie in Britannien fanden und finden sich bei
archäologischen Ausgrabungen in Gebieten mit Feuchtbodenerhaltung dennoch vermehrt hölzerne Schreibtafeln.
Das vorliegende kommentierte Inventar der Fundorte von hölzernen Schreibtafeln fasst diese Funde in einer Übersicht
zusammen. Aus 63 unterschiedlichen Fundstellen sind zusammen über 2500 Wachstafeln (tabulae ceratae) überliefert.
Neun Orte haben zusammen ferner über 1100 der dünneren leaf tablets (tiliae) hervorgebracht. Diese materielle
Hinterlassenschaft gibt Einblicke in die vielgestaltigen Ausformungen antiker Schriftlichkeit. Die vielfach auf diesen
Schreibtafeln erhaltenen Texte bilden zudem einen unschätzbar wertvollen Fundus zu unterschiedlichsten Aspekten
der Geschichte der römischen Antike.

Between 1998 and 2001 at Contrà Pedemuro S. Biagio, in the town of Vicenza, an interesting cluster of loom weights has brought to light.
Contrà Pedemuro S. Biagio is located in the urban area of the town, in the north of via Postumia, nearby the river. Archaeological investigations revealed the presence of a complex structure of a building, dated from the Augustan period to the 2nd century.
Among the ceramic finds, 76 loom weights with truncated pyramidal shape and rectangular or thin rectangular base have been found. A lot of them (more than 55%) have an un-epigraphic little stamp on the upper base, but some sample have some decorative stamps on lateral surface or graffiti post cocturam.
The Contrà Pedemuro S. Biagio cluster of loom weights supply new details in relation to the results of a recent Padova University Project, and better define the role of wool economy in Roman Vicenza.

The paper examines the epigraphic dossier regarding Annia Arescusa, a domina involved in the manufacture of different kinds of construction material, architectural terracottas (“Lastre campana”), bricks and tiles. The terracotta plaques depict two different iconographies connected to the chariot races in the circus maximus, a race and a naufragium. The structure of the production, dated to the 1st century AD, involved the activity of a slave, Flamma, known from the stamps first as a servus and later as a freedman.

Il contributo prende in esame l’insieme di testimonianze epigrafiche che riguardano Annia Arescusa, una domina responsabile di una produzione di materiale da costruzione fittile e attestata dai marchi noti sia su lastre architettoniche di rivestimento, raffiguranti due varianti di scene circensi, una corsa di quadriga e un naufragium, sia su tegole e mattoni. La struttura dell’attività manifatturiera, collocabile nel I secolo d.C., vede la partecipazione anche di un schiavo, Flamma, che marchia anch’egli prima come servus e poi a seguito della propria emancipazione come liberto.

Die römische Stadt auf dem Magdalensberg, von 1948 bis 2011 alljährlich in systematischen Grabungen untersucht, erbrachte beträchtliche Mengen an Funden, die Aufschlüsse über Nahrung und Ernährungsgewohnheiten geben: Tierknochen, marine und terrestrische Mollusken, botanische Reste, Koch- und Tafelgeschirr oder Amphoren für den Wein- und Lebensmittelimport aus dem gesamten Mittelmeerraum. Viele Graffiti und tituli picti auf Amphoren und Krügen erteilen Auskünfte über Menge oder Gewicht, spezifizieren den Inhalt oder nennen ein genaues Datum. Unter den Baubefunden sind einige Küchenensembles bekannt, die durch Funde an Küchengeräten ergänzt werden. Dieser reiche Quellenbestand gibt wertvolle Einblicke in das vorhandene Nahrungsmittelangebot der Stadt, in ihre Tafelkultur sowie die lokalen Kochgewohnheiten.


Summary:

Excavations in the Roman town on the Magdalensberg, which continued annually from 1948 to 2011, yielded enormous data as regards diet and dietary evidence: animal bones, marine and non-marine molluscs, plant residues, cooking pots and fine tableware; amphorae and jugs give proof of imported wine and foodstuffs from the whole Mediterranean. Furthermore, several graffiti and tituli picti on amphorae and jugs mention the weight or the quantity of their contents, but also a precise date. Besides kitchen-utensils, kitchens and their facilities were recorded as well among the archaeological structures. Therefore, this rich archaeological source permits to gain insight concerning the town’s supplies with foodstuffs, the dining culture or local cooking habits.

This paper examines the attestations of imperial slaves and freedmen on signacula
ex aere. It is a documentation often neglected, but extremely important: there are,
in fact, quoted procuratores, dispensatores, actores at the service of the emperor and in
one, or maybe two cases of an Augusta. Interesting are the evidences of a regionarius of
the regio V of Rome, and of the freedman M. Aurelius Cleander, who was a cubiculo of
Commodus and is also known from literary sources.

Amilcare Ancona (1839‐1890) fu, tra i molti aspetti della sua vita, un assiduo collezionista di materiale archeologico ed epigrafico. Si analizzano, in questo contributo, l’entità della sua collezione, i cataloghi da lui redatti, i rapporti con personalità scientifiche dell’epoca, e si presenta infine un nucleo inedito di lettere appartenenti alla corrispondenza instaurata con Theodor Mommsen. // Amilcare Ancona (1839‐1890) was a collector of archaeological and epigraphic material. In this paper, we analyse the entity of his collection, the catalogues he published, the relations he maintained with experts and we present a set of letters, yet unpublished, pertaining to his correspondence with Theodor Mommsen.

Archaeological excavations carried out by a mission from the Jagiellonian University Institute of Archaeology on the site of the agora of Nea Paphos in Cyprus brought to light a lead weight with a Greek inscription giving the year 251 of an era and mentioning an agoranomos with the name Seleukos. On the basis of parallels, the author demonstrates that the weight must have been issued by the North Syrian city of Seleucia in Pieria, and the era used in the inscription is the civic era of Seleucia with the starting point in 109/108 , which allows one to date the object to 142/143. He argues that the structure where the object was found can tentatively be identified as agoranomeion of Nea Paphos.

This paper focuses on an unknown tessera nummularia that Francesco Bianchini, the famous scholar of antiquities, saw in Rome in the collection of Francesco Ficoroni. Bianchini went on to draw the piece in a manuscript now kept in Biblioteca Capitolare di Verona. On the tessera
nummularia we read the name of a slave, Chresimus, who belonged to two or more Bibuli. This family was united in a societas, which was in possession of a lot of money on July 1, 42 BCE. If the Bibuli can be identified as the Calpurnii Bibuli, we would have a further evidence of the
Roman aristocracy’s interest in financial activities in the second half of the 1st century BCE.

Inscriptions on lead weights and aequipondia, as, more generally, inscriptions on weighing instruments, can be grouped mainly in four functional categories: official standard weights, inscriptions concerning the weight of the object, ownership inscriptions and production inscriptions. They well represent the complexity of the economic-commercial dynamics that toke shape in Augustan time, between the coexistence of marketplaces with different traditions and the desire for control and regulation by the central power.
