Medieval and modern spanish art

Around the 1485 was born in Villaescusa de Haro Sebastián Ramírez de Fuenleal (c. 1485-1547), in a family which has dedicated all its best men in the progress of the Kingdom of Castilla. Sebastián Ramírez will life to see the transformation of this Kingdom in an Empire under the government of Carlos V, and to be one of the most trustworthy men of the emperor. After being the responsible of the civil an ecclesiastic government in Santo Domingo (1528-1531) and the president of the Real Audiencia de Nueva España in Tenochtitlán (1531-1535) before the existence of the Viceroyalty; he returned to Spain to be the president of the Real Audiencia de Granada (1536-1539), after of the one in Valladolid (1539-1542) and also the president of the commission responsible to create the laws of the spanish territories in America (1542); at last at the same time he was the bishop of Tuy (1537-1539), León (1539-1542) and Cuenca (1542-1547).
    In this city he decided in the end of 1544 to begin the construction of a new cloister in the cathedral which was almost in ruins, and -after the repeated refusal of the Cathedral Chapter- decided to support at least the building of its hallway. To design and to make it, he chose a singular french man who had been working with the best artists in the Iberian Peninsula since 1535 and for men as important as Francisco de los Cobos: Étienne Jamet (c. 1515-1546) known as Esteban Jamete. The union of these two special men made of the entrance to the cloister of the Cuenca cathedral an exceptional space where the art of Jamet –full of quality, diversity, elegance and pathos- was used to advertise the wishes of the Carlos’ V court to reach the universitas christiana, through a triumphal arc which memorializes the hoped catholic triumph; and inside, the hallway conceived as a meditation’s place for the Christian who is spur on to the virtue’s way of wisdom and fight against the vice to achieve the eternal life in Jesus Christ. Thereby they became the ruins of this space in a stair to God along the religious wars and the inner struggle of citizens, they made the Arco de Sebastián Ramírez de Fuenleal (1546-1550).

This article describes two fragments of the alabaster virgin that presided over the centre altarpiece of the church of Saint Mary in Tamarite in 1504, having been commissioned by the legal representatives of the town of Tamarite and the sculptor Juan Dusi, native of Bruges and resident of Zaragoza. The piece was made just after the completion of the altarpiece, made with panels painted by the Zaragoza-born painters Miguel and Juan Ximénez between 1500 and 1503, and it continued to preside over the presbytery even when the Gothic furnishings were replaced by a new altarpiece, in this case made by the sculptor Juan de Loscertales in around 1682. The sculpture remained in this location until 1936, when material goods of the parish church were destroyed in the context of the Spanish Civil War. Since then, it was believed that the work was missing, hence the relevance of the recently recovered fragments.

El pintor Ramón Shiva y García (Santander, 1893 – Santa Fe de Nuevo Méjico, 1963) es uno de los artistas más relevantes que todavía permanecen en el olvido en nuestro país. De hecho, su apellido no figura en los libros sobre la historia de nuestra pintura, ni en ningún diccionario de referencia artística. Sin embargo, Ramón Shiva es considerado en los Estados Unidos, como uno de los principales precursores de las corrientes vanguardistas de Chicago desde que en la década de 1920 jugara un papel predominante en los grupos radicales The No-Jury Society of Artists, The Cor Ardens y Neo-Arlimusc junto a pintores como Rudolph Weisenborn, Raymond Johnson y Carl Hoeckner. 
Ramón Shiva fue además un afamado químico y empresario, pues concibió la innovadora marca de pinturas artísticas Shivas Artists Colors que sería utilizada por notables creadores como Norman Rockwell y Josef Albers a lo largo del siglo XX.

The painter Ramón Shiva (1893 - 1963); pioneer of the Avant-garde of Chicago (1920 - 1930) and the chemistry of colors.

The painter Ramón Shiva y García (Santander, Spain, 1893 - Santa Fe of New Mexico, 1963) is one of the most relevant artists that still remains in oblivion in Spain. In fact, his last name does not appear in any book about the history of Spanish painting nor in any dictionary of artistic reference. However, Ramón Shiva is considered in the United States, as one of the main precursors of the avant-garde currents of Chicago since the 1920´s when he played a key role in the radical groups The No-Jury Society of Artists, The Cor Ardens  and Neo-Arlimusc with painters such as Rudolph Weisenborn, Raymond Johnson and Carl Hoeckner. Ramón Shiva was also a famous chemist and businessman as he conceived the innovative brand of artistic paints Shivas Artists Colors that would be used by prominent artists such as Norman Rockwell and Josef Albers throughout the twentieth century.

Este libro aborda el estudio de la Arquitectura y Decoración de dos sinagogas medievales: la de Córdoba y la del Tránsito (Toledo), los dos exponentes más destacados del legado artístico hispano-judío que conserva hoy el Patrimonio Nacional.
Esta obra está dividida en dos partes: la primera, dedicada a la Sinagoga de Córdoba, y la segunda, a la del Tránsito. De ambas se aborda el análisis de la decoración y epigrafía que corre por sus muros, utilizando un tipo de interpretación que ya se ha usado para el análisis de edificios islámicos.
Esta corriente de estudio considera que la epigrafía era elegida y compuesta específicamente para cada lugar, aportando un sentido simbólico al espacio y al resto de la decoración. En el caso de la Sinagoga de Córdoba, epigrafía y decoración componen un programa simbólico que busca transmitir un discurso basado en la promesa divina de redención del pueblo de Israel y en otros elementos que forman parte de este imaginario, como la esperanza en la llegada del Mesías y en la reconstrucción del Templo en Jerusalén. En cambio, el programa simbólico de la Sinagoga del Tránsito se centra principalmente en el libro del Génesis y, en concreto, en la separación del cielo y de la tierra, representados en la sinagoga mediante el artesonado decorado con estrellas y el friso con decoración vegetal que recorre toda la sala de oración. Este programa decorativo transmite al espectador la grandeza de Dios como creador.

A uno le tienta considerar que las tentadoras imágenes de los demonios representados en las pinturas de San Baudelio de Berlanga eran, a los ojos del campesino castellano del siglo xii, perfectamente creíbles, aunque hoy sólo mantengan su espectro en el arriccio del mural y su maculada presencia en la pátina calcificada (junto a la tentación de los panes y las piedras y Cristo en pie sobre el alero del Templo). Un par de aquellos demonios aparecen alados y otro con garras, de color pardo o violáceo, barbados y con greñas. Apariciones increpantes que ponen los pelos de punta y fueron valientemente desarticuladas por Jesucristo al inicio del ciclo cuaresmal, en estrecha relación con el hombre nuevo insuflado por el sacramento bautismal mozárabe (aludido indirectamente en la aledaña escena de las bodas de Caná, cuando Cristo convirtió el agua en vino, más tarde transformada en la sangre del Calvario) que recurre al exorcismo: Exordio te, inmunde spiritus, hostis humani generis. Todavía hoy una fotocopia plastificada colocada sobre una aguabenditera en la parroquia zamorana de San Juan de Puerta Nueva transmite el mensaje con la mayor claridad: “Agua bendita. Para dar gracias a Dios por el bautismo. Para purificarnos y acudir a la confesión. Para protegernos del maligno”.

Espigando el diverso y abigarrado contenido del primer artículo dedicado a la biografía de Mencía de Mendoza, es bastante curioso el hecho de que su humilde y opaco autor, que no se atrevió a firmar la pieza,  otorgase veracidad a una supuesta conversación entre la dama y su marido. Según este relato, en una de las ocasiones en que el noble guerrero hubo regresado al calor del hogar señorial, su esposa resumió los quehaceres acometidos durante la ausencia marital respondiendo a su cónyuge: “Señor, ya tenéis palacio en que morar, quinta en que cazar y capilla en que os enterrar”.
A este ingeniosa respuesta, a su “vivísima inteligencia”,  debe sin duda la Condesa de Haro casi toda la fama de que goza en nuestros días. Como prueba, basta con entrecomillar la frase “tenéis palacio en que morar” y hacer una búsqueda en la fuente de información por antonomasia de nuestro siglo XXI, Google, donde encontraremos alrededor de un centenar de resultados con este criterio: artículos académicos,  monografías, enciclopedias y diccionarios biográficos,  blogs e, incluso, la página de presentación de las escrituras para la creación de la famosa capilla de los Condestables en la catedral burgalesa a la que Mencía de Mendoza dedicó gran parte de su vida,  todos ellos engalanan la fama de la Condesa de Haro por medio de la sutil agudeza indicada.

My dissertation examines the Cámara Santa of the Cathedral of Oviedo as both a medieval and modern monument, shaped by twelfth-century bishops and twentieth-century restorers. I consider the space as a multi-media ensemble, containing manuscripts, metalwork, and sculpture, arguing that we must view it as a composite—if fragmented—whole. My analysis focuses on the twelfth century, a crucial period during which the structure, decoration, and contents of the Cámara Santa were reworked. A key figure in this story is Bishop Pelayo of Oviedo (d. 1153), who sought to enhance the antiquity and authority of the see of Oviedo by means of the cult of its most important reliquary: the Arca Santa. I argue that this reliquary shapes the form and function of the twelfth-century Cámara Santa, considering the use of the space in the context of liturgy and pilgrimage. Finally, I consider the sculpture that lines the walls of the space, arguing that it animates and embodies the relics contained within the Arca Santa, interacting with the pilgrims and canons who used the space. Thus, this sculpture represents the culmination of the long twelfth-century transformation of the Cámara Santa into a space of pilgrimage focused around the Arca Santa and the memory of the early medieval patrons of the Cathedral of Oviedo, a memory which abides to this day. What is importantly new about my project is this historiographic frame, combined with a theoretical approach that challenges traditional methods and interpretations. I foreground the importance of the Cámara Santa for both regional and national identity. My reflexive reading of the medieval and modern histories of the Cámara Santa offers alternative interpretations for a space whose meaning has long been presented as ideologically fixed.  NOTE: this copy presented without images owing to copyright issues.

This essay focuses on the illustrations of the apocalyptic passage of "silence in heaven" (Revelation 8.1) in a group of medieval manuscripts of the Commentary on the Apocalypse by the Spanish monk Beatus of Liébana, dated from the 10th to the 12th centuries. These images present a fascinating variety of pictorial solutions that have been largely overlooked by art historians: the combination of abstract and symbolic patterns, the deconstruction of script, and the exploration of the materiality of the parchment as a theatrical milieu to make silence present and palpable. I begin by tracing the textual and visual origins of the motif, advancing a hypothesis on the probable existence of a pictorial archetype from Beatus’ own time (8th century), and continue by analyzing the conditions of production and reception of these images in the context of 10th-century Mozarabic monasticism and within practice of lectio divina, where the concept of silence acquired multiple meanings. To conclude, I develop a theoretical reflection on the problematics of the representation of silence, drawing analogies with several 20th-century artists such as John Cage and Robert Rauschenberg whose artistic experiments around this theme find their medieval counterparts in the productions of remarkable illuminators such as Ovecus and Petrus. Framing this essay is a critical examination of the results of the engagement of painters Fernand Léger and Roberto Matta with the illustrations of one of these manuscripts, the so-called Morgan Beatus, which had been famously introduced to them by Meyer Schapiro in the 1930´s, shedding light on the complexities of the dialogue between medieval and modern art.

Investigation about Sebastián Ramírez de Fuenleal through the architectonical industries which were supported and boosted by him as ecclesiastical and political governor of La Española and Nueva España between 1528 and 1536. These were a main part of his goverment, characterized by achieving the development of the american cities and citizens, specially the welfare of the natives.

El presente artículo reexamina las pinturas de los cuartos de las frutas de la Alhambra y reivindica su papel precursor en el desarrollo del bodegón español. Aunque las pinturas de los cuartos de las frutas han sido estudiadas solo en relación con el Renacimiento italiano, este artículo las considera desde la perspectiva de su emplazamiento en el marco arquitectónico y simbólico de la Alhambra, así como en el contexto de la utilización del naturalismo como lenguaje pictórico al servicio de la ideología imperial, poniendo de manifiesto conexiones entre estas pinturas y la historial natural, el pasado islámico y la ideología imperial.

Dentro del actual proceso de restauración de la colegiata de Santa María la Mayor, en Calatayud, iniciada con la actualización y revisión del Plan Director en 2011, se inscribe la reciente actuación del Instituto del Patrimonio Cultural de España, que ha atendido a la recuperación del ábside y del cuerpo de sacristía. Elementos con una compleja historia constructiva, han sido objeto de trabajos de muy diversa naturaleza en respuesta a las patologías, también diversas, y en especial, de tipo estructural, que presentaban. Las obras y su paralelo estudio histórico y arqueológico han permitido un mejor conocimiento de la historia del edificio y facilitado la interpretación de algunos de los problemas de conservación diagnosticados.

The current restoration process of the Collegiate Church of St. Mary Major, in Calatayud, which was initiated with the updated and revised Master Plan in 2011, includes the recent intervention of the Cultural Heritage Institute of Spain in the recovery of the apse and the vestry. The elements have a complex structural history and the work carried out on them has been diverse in nature in response to their varied pathologies and, in particular, structural types. The works, and their parallel historical and archaeological study, have provided a better understanding of the history of the building and enabled the interpretation of some of the conservation problems identified.

In open disagreement with the conventional interpretation of lily in the iconographic theme of The Annunciation –illustrated with great relevance in the ten Spanish Gothic paintings we discuss here—, this article proposes two new theological explanations of this flower in this biblical scene. We rely for this in many consistent exegesis of prestigious Church Fathers and medieval theologians on the wondrous flourishing of the Aaron’s dry rod. Thus, based in such a perfect exegetic match of Christian thinkers, which certifies in this issue a consolidated dogmatic tradition over nearly a millennium, we try to show that the stem of lilies in the scene of the Annunciation exhibits two Christological and Mariological profound symbolisms, essentially interrelated, i.e.: this stem of irises means at the same time the supernatural human incarnation of God the Son and the virginal divine motherhood of Mary.

Resumen: En abierto desacuerdo con la convencional interpretación del lirio en el tema iconográfico de La Anunciación –ilustrado con gran pertinencia en las diez pinturas góticas españolas que aquí analizamos—, el presente artículo propone dos nuevas explicaciones teológicas de dicha flor en esa escena bíblica. Nos basamos para ello en numerosas y concordantes exégesis de prestigiosos Padres de la Iglesia y teólogos medievales sobre el prodigioso florecimiento de la vara seca de Aarón. Así, fundándonos en esa perfecta coincidencia exegética de los pensadores cristianos, la cual certifica en ese punto una consolidada tradición dogmática a lo largo de casi un milenio, tratamos de mostrar que el ramo de lirios en la escena de la Anunciación exhibe dos profundos simbolismos, cristológico y mariológico, interrelacionados de manera esencial, a saber: ese ramo de lirios significa al mismo tiempo la sobrenatural encarnación humana de Dios Hijo y la virginal maternidad divina de María.

In the middle of the XVI century began the construction of a new cloister in the cathedral of Cuenca, the bishop Sebastián Ramírez de Fuenleal supported it building its hallway. This space is used to advertise the wishes of the Carlos’ V court to reach the universitas christiana, through an arc which memorializes the hoped catholic triumph; and inside, the hallway as a meditation’s place for the Christian who is spur on to the virtue’s way of wisdom and fight against the vice to achieve the eternal life in Jesus Christ.

D’ençà de la divisió d’Europa en diverses confessions, l’art es posà al servei de les doctrines dominants de cada territori. Aquest procés generà reaccions, resistències i continuïtats d’algunes litúrgies o creences. Imatge, devoció i identitat a l’època moderna desgrana l’influx de les reformes religioses en les arts visuals dels segles XVI-XVIII, sobretot al territori català i la corona hispànica, però també a les antigues terres de la Corona d’Aragó, Nàpols i Sardenya. L’obra posa l’accent en la creació de nous temes iconogràfics dins la Passió i la Vida de la Verge; els elements clau de la literatura contrareformista, que plantejà nous conceptes per a l’art; el culte marià o altres advocacions ben arrelades, com la de la Mare de Déu de Montserrat, i dedica una atenció especial a l’oratòria i la predicació. Va ser un temps en què, amb la guerra dels Segadors com a teló de fons, l’art i la religió van tenir un paper cabdal per a la configuració d’imatges i missatges ben poderosos, encara avui d’un enorme interès per al nostre passat col·lectiu.

La ininterrumpida circulación de artistas, de obras y de modelos de un lado al otro de los Pirineos a lo largo de toda la Edad Media y buena parte de la Moderna, y las relaciones dinámicas y dialécticas que generaron estos flujos tanto en sus lugares de origen como en los de recepción, acabaron posibilitando la aparición de fenómenos sumamente ricos e interesantes, fruto de múltiples aportaciones, interacciones y transferencias, que no solo no se ajustan a la geografía de las naciones de la Europa moderna, sino que tampoco parecen responder a las taxonomías y periodizaciones estilísticas al uso. Tratando de trascender todas estas coordenadas, perseguimos analizar el fenómeno protagonizado por los canterosy entalladores que atravesaron los Pirineos para trabajar en la península ibérica a lo largo de los siglos XV y XVI, prestando una atención especial a cómo fue percibido por quienes asistieron a su génesis y evolución.

La Sardegna del secondo Quattrocento, grazie alla sua strategica posizione geografica al centro del Mediterraneo, ricoprì un ruolo importantissimo nella rete di scambi commerciali che vivacizzarono e consolidarono la forza della Corona d’Aragona. I porti sardi divennero luogo di scambio e d’incontro non solo di merci ma anche di culture e uomini, di opere e artisti che dalla costa si spinsero sino al più piccolo villaggio dell’interno. In questo contesto si sviluppò una fervida produzione artistica composta da molteplici influssi internazionali. Del patrimonio pittorico sardo ben poco è sopravvissuto ai tempi e agli uomini. Ciononostante, grazie alle opere conservate e alle traiettorie artistiche dei suoi principali protagonisti, è stato possibile tracciarne le peculiarità e definirne i caratteri. Attraverso lo studio dei retabli, imponenti Pale d’altare di chiara matrice catalano-aragonese, si è riusciti a delineare e contestualizzare l’azione dei principali protagonisti della pittura sarda tardo-quattrocentesca. Tra questi l’emblematico Maestro di Castelsardo il cui catalogo è stato integrato e comparato con le produzioni delle principali botteghe catalane.

The figure of the ‘wild man’ or ‘savage’, also called homo agreste u homo sylvaticus, is
really complex. It is not only a unique element with a specific origin coming from a single oral or
written tradition, but an imaginary creature which derives from the joining of cultured and popular
elements, as well as written, oral and iconographical sources. To some extent it was a legendary
creature which turned into an ambiguous embodiment of the “other”. An otherness of the fantastic
that was already captured in the Antiquity by means of the representation of grotesque monsters
such as centaurs or fauns, and that in the 12th century Europe was encoded in a myth based on the
old Greco-Roman and Christian-Jewish traditions.

The theme is " Converge, " a word that evokes the contacts and intersections that make history happen, and that can serve as a reflection point for our conference. Our theme is intended to inspire rather than delimit submissions and, as in past years, the ASPHS invites session proposals for panels and/or individual presentations on any aspect of Iberian and Iberian-Atlantic history, art history, or literature. The typical panel will include three papers, a chairperson, and a discussant. We welcome proposals for roundtable discussions of a particular work or theme. Proposals should include a 200-word abstract for each paper and a one-page curriculum vitae for each participant, including chairs and discussants. Please include each participant's name and e-mail address, along with any requests for audio/visual equipment or other special requirements. This year's conference will feature keynote speaker Daniela Bleichmar of the University of Southern California. Bleichmar is an award-winning Historian and Art Historian of botanical expeditions in the 18 th century and an authority on science in the Spanish and Portuguese empires more generally. A second conference address will be given by historian Josep Calvet, of the University of Lleida, Spain. Calvet's research focuses on the Franco dictatorship as well as the history of Pyrenean escape routes used by Jews and other refugees fleeing Nazi terror in the Second World War.

Durante la Edad Media, como en otros periodos, la sacralidad preexistió a las acciones humanas. Mediante acciones rituales y producciones tangibles, las personas pudieron conferir sacralidad al mundo físico o a parte de él. Conforme a ciertos protocolos y procedimientos, se construyeron objetos, imágenes y recintos sagrados.
La explicación de la relación entre arte y sacralidad sigue siendo aún hoy muy problemática. Para avanzar en su comprensión, las teorías de la secularización en las sociedades modernas propician un complejo discurso sobre la “transferencia de la sacralidad”, desarrollado desde el siglo XVIII, que abarca varios aspectos. En primer lugar, implica el establecimiento de criterios de selección de lugares, de
protección de objetos y de transmutación del valor sacro de unos y otros a través de prácticas litúrgicas. De ese modo, merced a esos tres factores (lugar, reliquia y rito) se materializa la presencia espiritual y material de entes sagrados. En segundo lugar, es necesario continuar precisando el modo en que los marcos espaciales contextualizan el contacto directo de los fieles con los recipientes de lo sagrado.
Su presencia se perpetúa con la fijación topográfica y la continuidad histórica de esa comunidad que, a través de su institución religiosa se apropia del hecho sagrado, de su emplazamiento y de los marcos espaciales que circunscriben la trascendencia y propician su experiencia. En tercer lugar, dado que no es posible definir para el pasado medieval las emociones espirituales intensificadas por la presencia de imágenes y relicarios ni de las emociones estéticas
ante los instrumentos que permiten ver lo invisible, se ha procurado enunciar desde el espectro emocional del presente. La historia del arte románico está en deuda con la literatura mística de los siglos XI-XIII, pero tanto o más con los modos empleados por la fenomenología contemporánea para denotar la experiencia religiosa.
Este coloquio no se dedica a lo sagrado como sustantivo –antropológico o sociológico–, sino a las funciones y relaciones que adjetivan al arte del periodo románico y que permitieron que ese arte fuera el instrumento más idóneo para lograr la presencia global de la sacralidad.
