The concept of ‘core category’ is most associated with the grounded theory method developed by Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss but has been utilised in relation to other qualitative methods such as phenomenology. Future networks are expected to depart from traditional routing schemes in order to embrace network coding (NC)-based schemes. These have created a lot of interest both in academia and industry in recent years. Under the NC paradigm, symbols are transported through the network by combining several information streams originating from the same or different sources. This special issue contains thirteen papers, some dealing with design aspects of NC and related concepts (e.g., fountain codes) and some showcasing the application of NC to new services and technologies, such as data multi-view streaming of video or underwater sensor networks. One can find papers that show how NC turns data transmission more robust to packet losses, faster to decode, and more resilient to network changes, such as dynamic topologies and different user options, and how NC can improve the overall throughput. This issue also includes papers showing that NC principles can be used at different layers of the networks (including the physical layer) and how the same fundamental principles can lead to new distributed storage systems. Some of the papers in this issue have a theoretical nature, including code design, while others describe hardware testbeds and prototypes.

In this paper, blind image separation is performed, exploiting the property of sparseness to represent images. A new sparse representation called forward difference method is proposed. It is known that most of the independent component analysis (ICA) basis functions, extracted from images are sparse and gives unreliable sparseness measure. In the proposed method, the image mixture is first transformed to sparse images. These images are divided into blocks and for each block the sparseness measure ε0 norm is applied. The block having the most sparseness is considered to determine the separation matrix. The efficiency of the proposed method is compared with other sparse representation functions.

One of the most efficient methods of exploiting space diversity for portable wireless devices is cooperative communication utilizing space-time block codes. In cooperative communication, users besides communicating their own information, also relay the information of other users. In this paper we investigate a scheme where cooperation is achieved using two methods, namely, distributed space-time coding and network coding. Two cooperating users utilize Alamouti space time code for inter user cooperation and in addition utilize a third relay which performs network coding. The third relay does not have any of its information to be sent. In this paper we propose a scheme utilizing convolutional code based network coding, instead of conventional XOR based network code and utilize iterative joint networkchannel decoder for efficient decoding. Extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart analysis is performed to investigate the convergence property of the proposed decoder.

There is no doubt that network coding is a promising enhancement of routing to improve network
throughput and provide high reliability. However, there are several open problems in practical network
coding, especially on how to guarantee coding advantage for a decentralized control network without the
knowledge of the network topology. The biggest benefit of OpenFlow is to decouple the control plane from
the data plane, allowing the centralized forwarding decisions in comparison to traditional distributed
control network. As a result, we propose a Software-Defined coding network and address key technical
challenges in practice. We design NC-OF, a framework to enable networking coding in SDN networks, and
use MMF-NC coding strategy proposed by Guan Xu in NC-OF. Finally, we proved that our solutions can
effectively improve network performance through simulation experiments. And we also find that network
coding is not necessary when the link bandwidth is enough , because it will bring the problems of time
delay, the increase in the amount of calculation and so on.

Network Coding (NC) shows great potential in various communication scenarios through changing the packet forwarding principles of current networks. It can improve not only throughput, latency, reliability and security but also alleviates the need of coordination in many cases. However, it is still controversial due to widespread misunderstandings on how to exploit the advantages of it. The aim of the paper is to facilitate the usage of NC by (i) explaining how it can improve the performance of the network (regardless the existence of any butterfly in the network), (ii) showing how Software Defined Networking (SDN) can resolve the crucial problems of deployment and orchestration of NC elements, and (iii) providing a prototype architecture with measurement results on the performance of our network coding capable software router implementation compared by fountain codes.

In recent times, there have been many advances in the field of information theory and wireless ad hoc network technologies. Regarding information theory progression and its connection with wireless ad hoc networks, this study presents fundamental concepts related to the application of the state-of-the-art Network Coding (NC) within wireless ad hoc networks in the context of routing. To begin with, this paper briefly describes opportunistic routing and identifies differentiation between NC-aware and NC-based routing mechanisms in wireless ad hoc networks. However, our main focus is to provide a survey of available NC-aware routing protocols that make forwarding decisions based on the information of available coding opportunities across several routes within wireless ad hoc networks. The taxonomy and characteristics of various representative NC-aware routing protocols will also be discussed. In summary, we provide a comparison of available NC-aware routing schemes and conclude that NC-aware routing techniques have several advantages over traditional routing in terms of high throughput, high reliability, and lower delay in a wireless scenario. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first that provides comprehensive discussion about NC-aware routing protocols.

This paper deals with the evaluation of the end-to-end packet delay for a lossy network where network coding is adopted to achieve better performance. Differently from previous published papers on this subject, connection oriented services are assumed, this means that packets have to be in-order received and wait at the receiver buffer till all the previous ones have been correctly delivered. The focus is on a network model where two source nodes broadcast packets to a group of two sink nodes over lossy wireless channels. Three different alternatives have been considered in order to assure a reliable data multicasting, namely: a classical random linear network coding scheme, a linear network coding combined with a basic ARQ or, alternatively, with a soft combined ARQ scheme. Performance comparisons provided by means of analytical and numerical results clearly highlight that the better solution is to adopt the latter alternative.

The problem of error control in random linear network coding is addressed from a matrix perspective that is closely related to the subspace perspective of Rotter and Kschischang. A large class of constant-dimension subspace codes is investigated. It is shown that codes in this class can be easily constructed from rank-metric codes, while preserving their distance properties. Moreover, it is shown that minimum distance decoding of such subspace codes can be reformulated as a generalized decoding problem for rank-metric codes where partial information about the error is available. This partial information may be in the form of erasures (knowledge of an error location but not its value) and deviations (knowledge of an error value but not its location). Taking erasures and deviations into account (when they occur) strictly increases the error correction capability of a code: if mu erasures and delta deviations occur, then errors of rank t can always be corrected provided that 2t les d - 1 + mu + delta, where d is the minimum rank distance of the code. For Gabidulin codes, an important family of maximum rank distance codes, an efficient decoding algorithm is proposed that can properly exploit erasures and deviations. In a network coding application, where n packets of length M over F(q) are transmitted, the complexity of the decoding algorithm is given by O(dM) operations in an extension field F(qn).
