Introduction: International evidence has found large mental health inequities among transgender people and demonstrates that mental health outcomes are associated with enacted stigma experiences and protective factors. This study aimed to examine the extent of associations of enacted stigma experiences specific to transgender people alongside protective factors with mental health of transgender people in Aotearoa/New Zealand. Methods: The 2018 Counting Ourselves survey was a nationwide community-based study of transgender people (N ¼ 1178, Mage ¼ 29.5) living in Aotearoa/New Zealand. The survey assessed a wide range of gender minority stress experiences and protective factors that comprised primary (support from friends and family) and secondary social ties (neighborhood and transgender community belongingness). We calculated the predicted probabilities that transgender people exhibit very high psychological distress level, non-suicidal self-injury, and suicidal risks with different combinations and exposure profiles of enacted stigma and protective factors. Results: Our findings demonstrated that enacted stigma was associated with negative mental health, and support of friends and family was linked to better outcomes across all mental health measures. Beyond primary social ties, sense of belongingness to neighborhood and transgender communities were linked to reduced odds of psychological distress and suicidal ideation. For those scoring high on enacted stigma and low on protective factors, our model revealed a 25% probability of attempting suicide in the last year compared to 3% for those scoring low on enacted stigma and high on protective factors. Conclusions: Echoing previous findings, this study demonstrates that transgender people across Aotearoa/New Zealand are less likely to manifest life-threatening mental health outcomes if they experience low levels of enacted stigma and high levels of access to protective factors. Our findings suggest a need to address the enacted stigma that transgender people face across interpersonal and structural settings, and also to enhance social supports that are gender affirmative for this population.

Objective: to analyze the difficulties of access to health services by LGBT people. Method: this is a descriptive bibliographic study of the integrative literature review type. The search was performed in January 2019 in the databases: MEDLINE, Web of Science and SCOPUS. We searched for articles with timeless delimitation. The articles were evaluated according to the AHRQ criteria and their eligibility by CASP. Data was analyzed in the IRAMUTEQ software from the Descending Hierarchical Classification. Results: it is noteworthy that the final sample consisted of ten articles, among them, 70% were available at SCOPUS; 10% on Web of Science and 20% on MEDLINE. Regarding the nationality of the studies, 10% were from Germany; 10% from Brazil; 10% from Argentina; 20% from Canada; 20% from South Africa and 30% from the United States of America. There is little research in sub-Saharan Africa on same-sex and other non-normative sexual relationships. In the era of HIV and AIDS which is mostly sexually transmitted in sub-Saharan Africa, and given previous authors’ findings regarding the HIV epidemic among black MSM across the African diaspora, we argue for focusing on the social implications of same-sex sexual behavior. Using evidence from Ghana and positioning our findings within recent scholarship on same-sex relationships in some parts of the world, particularly within African settings, we contribute to the body of knowledge on this issue. Gender and sexuality are viewed as cultural constructs in queer theory. The Queer Theory examines heteronormativity, patriarchy, and heterosexuality. It addresses deviant genders, sexualities, and sexual expressions in society. Coming out publicly as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer (commonly shortened as LGBTQ) can be difficult. LGBTQ students in India face sexual harassment, bullying, gender dysphoria, anxiety, depression, and slurs from peers. After this humiliation, students lose confidence and feel sad. Negative teacher and administrator interactions hinder children's socialisation. Students should attend impartial schools. Bullied LGBTQ students often commit suicide. This article examines marginalised LGBTQ students and their safety in Indian schools. The authors recommend improving LGBTQ student conditions in schools, colleges, and universities, especially in India.

Bondage, discipline, sadism and masochism (BDSM) both fascinates and repulses. While some are fascinated by its images of leather-clad mistresses and masters inflicting pain on willing slaves for sexual pleasure (Yes Master!), they are often also repulsed because BDSM also evokes images of sadistic Nazis and serial killers. The chic images associated with the BDSM lifestyle seem to be more palatable (a light whipping, a gentle handcuffing), but actual BDSM practices (foot worship, impact play) are still not acceptable, and BDSM is most commonly associated with deviance. Despite this negative perception of BDSM by some people, there is a thriving BDSM scene in South Africa, and participants in BDSM communities show their belonging through a specific set of verbal and non-verbal tropes. In this article, I analyse these tropes using the 'queer theory method' as a theoretical springboard which allows me to engage with the multimodal meanings of BDSM bodies without being confined to essentialist, stereotyped or identity-based ideas about the intersection of gender, sexuality, and race.

This article explores the existential strategies adopted by Gukurahundi victims in Christopher Mlalazi's Running with Mother and Novuyo Tshuma's House of Stone. The focus is on text-specific ways in which the victims cultivate a culture of survival and being in the midst of ethnonationalist violence. To that end, the article considers how subjection to violence without recourse to state protection necessitates radical thinking that compels the victims to formulate an ethic of togetherness where personal differences and ascribed social identities give way to intersubjectivity. The article argues that though such an ethic is not an inevitable outcome of shared vulnerability, nor does it automatically translate to organised refusal politics; it helps to keep the victims buoyant in the face of sustained victimisation. To explore these textual realities, the article deploys the lens of radical vulnerability. It proposes that reading Gukurahundi survivors' reinvention ethics through this lens can unravel new insights about the political function of vulnerability and bring forth a context-specific grammar for exploring counter-hegemonic politics.

puerto rico has one of the highest incidence rates of HiV in the u.S. concurrent with increases in sexually transmitted infections (Sti), an increasing share of the new infections in pr are associated with sexual transmission. Much of the available research on sexual risk in pr derives from Sti/HiV surveillance data. there is limited social and epidemiological research on sexual risk in pr, particularly in hidden and often hardto-reach populations at high risk. Despite the absence of substantial resources that most epidemiological studies require, a research collaboration was initiated in 2007 between researchers in the School of public Health at the university of puerto rico and the centro latinoamericano de enfermedades de transmisión Sexual (cletS), one of the largest publicly funded centers for Sti/HiV screening and treatment in the San Juan metropolitan area. Structured as a case study in the development of communitybased research collaborations, this paper describes the early history and development of the project, including formative research, recruitment and training of students, and evolution in the study design that contributed to the current configuration of the ongoing "core" study. preliminary data are presented, highlighting data from a number of subpopulations that may contribute to our understanding of the role of behavioral risk in the Sti/HiV epidemics in pr. More generally, the paper may guide the development of similar collaboration elsewhere in the caribbean where HiV risk is increasing but where resources for research in high risk settings and groups are scarce. Gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) are at increased risk for HIV infection and disease progression. Also, HIV-positive GBMSM are among those less likely to be retained in care. In this study we analyzed sexual health knowledge (SHK) and various manifestations of stigma in a community sample of HIV-positive GBMSM in Puerto Rico. The sample reports overall low SHK scores, and lower score were associated with low educational attainment, unemployment, low income, and with self-identifying heterosexual participants. Almost half of the sample reported moderate to severe perceived gay stigma, 68.4% reported moderate to severe hidden-gay stigma, and 30.6% reported moderate to severe HIV-felt stigma. Further research is recommended to obtain culturally congruent information and develop interventions addressing the multiple layers of stigma in the social context where the interventions will be delivered.

This thesis is presented in two parts – a Critical Thesis and a portfolio of Creative Writing. My Critical Thesis explores how violence in Zimbabwe necessarily derives from the question of the land. That it has a historical resonance that stretches from the fight for independence, to the post-independence internecine violence and to the present day. Given the unparalleled levels of violence, particularly violence against women, I interrogate the genealogy of this violence, in order to explore the basic assumptions of my thesis; that its aetiology, signs and symptoms, can only be read and understood in the context of past national trauma and group dynamics. I ponder the ways in which violence dominates Zimbabwe’s collective unconscious as a major part of its psychic history. Objective: to analyze, from the perspective of lesbian and bisexual women, Nursing care in Family Health Units. Method: this is a qualitative, exploratory and descriptive study, carried out by means of interviews with five lesbian and bisexual women. The study adopted, for information analysis, the Content Analysis technique, in the modality of Thematic Analysis. Results: lesbian and bisexual women face difficulties during nursing consultation, such as lack of reception, prejudice and nonspecific information about prevention of diseases. Método: Realizou-se uma Revisão de Escopo pautada nas etapas do Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI), seguindo as recomendações do Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (Prisma-ScR). Foram considerados como critérios de inclusão: estudos com textos disponíveis para acesso público, publicados entre 2012 e 2022, em formato de artigo, com idiomas em inglês, espanhol ou português. As fontes de informação utilizadas foram BVS, Web of Science e CINAHL via Portal da Capes, Scielo e Scopus, com os descritores "angústia psicológica", "pessoas transgêneros", "psychological distress" e "transgender persons", entre agosto e outubro de 2022. Os dados foram analisados por meio de estatística descritiva e a síntese desta análise foi organizada pela similaridade das temáticas. Resultados: Foram incluídos 24 artigos nesta revisão. Com a finalidade de agrupar informações relevantes foram destacadas três categorias principais: "Incidência do sofrimento mental", que evidencia os índices desse sofrimento; "Discriminação e estigmas", que apresenta a complexidade e as consequências negativas da discriminação; e "Impactos do acesso aos serviços de saúde", que retrata a adversidade, na qual os indivíduos transgêneros não conseguem usufruir dos seus direitos dentro dos diferentes níveis de atenção à saúde. Under the international human rights legal framework all persons, institutions, and entities, public and private, including the state itself, are accountable to just, fair and equitable laws and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law. Further, they also dedicate themselves to respect the equal rights of all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion, etc. Despite this acknowledgment, LGBTQ persons globally face harassment, violence, and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics. LGBTQ persons are often discriminated in fields like employment, housing, and access to services. This paper makes an attempt to focus specifically on the issues of privacy and general discrimination concerning sexual minorities at the regional level with a particular focus on the work of the ECHR and the ACHR in prohibiting discrimination against sexual minorities.

This essay explores the speculative ontology of Xenobacillus glossophagii, a glosso-pathogen conceptualized as a biolinguistic agent of semiotic horror. Far from a mere parasitic microbe, X. glossophagii functions as a metaphysical contagion that consumes tongues, devours taxonomies, and destabilizes the syntactical certainties that undergird identity, especially within discourses of sexual deviance. We theorize this organism as a pathogenic operator in language itself, transmitted not through fluids or surfaces but through the discursive matrices of psychiatry, media, and juridico-medical taxonomies—particularly the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, where it metabolizes kink into diagnostic speech.

This chapter examines the intersecting experiences of the Japanese LGBTQ+ community in relation to home life, healthcare access, mental health, and human rights perceptions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on comprehensive survey data and intersectional analysis, it highlights the challenges of invisibility and vulnerability within family settings, frequent concealment of LGBTQ+ identities in healthcare contexts, and alarming rates of anxiety and depression among subgroups, particularly transgender individuals and racial/ethnic minorities. The study also explores how variables such as age, relationship status, gender identity, sexual orientation, and occupational status impact mental health outcomes. In parallel, it investigates the community’s knowledge and attitudes about human rights protections in Japan. The findings underscore the urgent need for inclusive policies and mental health support systems that account for LGBTQ+ individuals’ diverse realities and reinforce their human rights.

This chapter presents an in-depth quantitative and intersectional analysis of how the COVID-19 pandemic affected the Japanese LGBTQ+ community. Drawing on a detailed survey of over 300 participants, the chapter explores experiences related to infection, health and financial impacts, disruptions to daily life, preparedness for quarantine, and perceptions of threat. It further examines how social distancing measures influenced participants’ lives across multiple domains—home, work, school, healthcare, partnerships, friendships, and access to LGBTQ+ spaces and services. Key sociodemographic variables, including gender, sexuality, age, education, income, nationality, relationship status, and racial/ethnic identity, are analyzed to uncover how layered vulnerabilities shaped individual and community outcomes. The chapter highlights both the shared and differentiated experiences within the community and underscores the importance of culturally grounded, inclusive, and data-informed approaches to health and social equity for LGBTQ+ populations in times of crisis.

This chapter explores the lived experiences of the Japanese LGBTQ+ community during the COVID-19 pandemic, with a particular focus on how pre-existing social, legal, and cultural marginalizations intersected with the global health crisis. Moving beyond monolithic views of the community, the study highlights the diverse and transnational nature of Japanese LGBTQ+ individuals and couples, examining how systemic invisibility, inadequate legal protections, and heteronormative public health policies compounded the pandemic’s impact. Drawing on interdisciplinary research and comparative global insights, this work problematizes the myth of LGBTQ+ tolerance in Japan and interrogates the implications of global LGBTQ+ rights discourse, including issues of pinkwashing, homonationalism, and cultural imperialism. It ultimately advocates for a nuanced, intersectional approach that centers marginalized voices and recognizes the plurality of queer subjectivities in Japan and beyond.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth are at risk for engaging in negative health behaviors and for experiencing at-school victimization. Specific benefits of attending a high school with a gay-straight alliance (GSA), including lower levels of suicidality, have been published; however, it is unclear whether GSAs are related to lower levels of problematic substance use, depressive symptoms, and psychological distress. Using a sample of 145 LGBT youth recruited from college and university organizations for LGBT students, we examined whether attending a high school with a GSA was related to more positive school experiences and mental health outcomes for LGBT youth. The results indicate that youth who attended a high school with a GSA report significantly more favorable outcomes related to school experiences, alcohol use, and psychological distress. The implications of the findings are discussed as they relate to school psychologists. Important limitations of this study are reviewed.

Introduction: This paper reviews the literature on suicidal ideation, suicidal behavior, suicide methods and correlates of suicidality among Nigerian LGBT persons. Understanding the suicidality-related issues facing LGBT Nigerians can inform the designing of evidence-based interventions to reduce suicidality. Results: Findings revealed that Nigerian LGBT persons experienced self-harm, suicidal ideation, suicide attempts and the repetition of suicidal behavior using suicide methods such as pesticide self-poisoning, jumping, hanging, and overdose of medicines. LGBT persons who attempted suicide more than once reported experiencing different forms of minority stress. Several LGBT suicide attempters and ideators reported experiencing prior internalized homophobia, anti-LGBT bullying in schools and the larger society, anti-LGBT discrimination from family and conversion therapy. Minority stress was found to be linked with self-harm, suicidal ideation and suicide attempts among Nigerian LGBT persons. Additionally, experiencing anti-LGBT discrimination, conversion therapy and depression were found to be correlates of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts among Nigerian LGBT persons. Discussion: This study highlights the importance of addressing the minority stress experienced by Nigerian LGBT persons in order to reduce their vulnerability to suicidality. Finally, this study highlights research gaps and discusses the implications of the study findings for suicide prevention interventions, advocacy and policy making in Nigeria.

We highlight the importance of culturally competent mental health services that affirm LGBTQIA+ identities and address the specific needs of these populations. Strategies for promoting mental well-being within LGBTQIA+ communities are discussed, including the role of peer support networks, advocacy initiatives, and inclusive policies. The paper emphasizes the necessity of a paradigm shift-from viewing LGBTQIA+ identities through a lens of pathology to recognizing the strengths and resilience within these communities. Furthermore, we analyze the potential for mental health interventions that empower LGBTQIA+ individuals by fostering identity acceptance and community engagement. By transforming stigma into strength, we can enhance the overall well-being of LGBTQIA+ communities and promote a more inclusive society. The findings underscore the need for ongoing research and advocacy to dismantle harmful stereotypes and improve mental health outcomes for LGBTQIA+ individuals.

Um debate sobre sexualidade e gênero a partir do materialismo histórico-dialético e da teoria social marxista por meio de possibilidades de interlocução com a filosofia de gênero de Judith Butler, o qual busca oferecer uma interpretação queer marxista dos movimentos sociais LGBTQIA+ no Brasil, em especial no tocante aos desafios à defesa de direitos dessa população, na conjuntura do capitalismo neoliberal, dialogando-se com as análises contemporâneas de Pierre Dardot e Christian Laval, Wendy Brown e Nancy Fraser.

The Canadian Jewish population continues to grow, standing at an estimated 404,400 in 2023. About 80% of that number reside in Ontario and Quebec (chiefly in Toronto and Montreal, together accounting for almost 69% of Canada's Jewish population), 18% in Canada's four western provinces, and 2% in the rest of the country. Certain categories of Canadian Jewry identify as Jewish less strongly than do other categories of the community. The 2021 census indicates that, on average, those who identify as Jewish less strongly include gender, Indigenous, and "visible" (that is, non-Indigenous racial) minorities. The accession of a new Israeli government in 2022 sharpened political divisions within Canadian Jewry. Two polls conducted in February and September 2023 indicate that most Canadians oppose key policies of the Netanyahu government, notably judicial reform that removes Israel's only check on legislative authority.

This study investigates the phenomenon of wearing hair rollers in public spaces and sharing photos of this practice on social media, particularly within contemporary Korean society. Rooted in the context of grooming routines, the study draws on existing research on ritualistic consumer experiences and the blurring of public and private spheres in modern society. A qualitative content analysis of Instagram posts-comprising captions, hashtags, and visual content (images/videos)-was conducted. The analysis followed grounded theory methodology, with three steps of coding: open, axial, and selective coding. The analysis revealed several key themes: the ordinariness of hair-rolling, the expansion of grooming rituals, the public display of a presentable appearance, and the blurring of boundaries between private and public spaces and times for hair-rolling. The findings are summarized as the hair-rolling phenomenon represents an expansion of traditional grooming rituals and a blurring of boundaries between public and private spheres. This shift reflects a broader trend of transitioning private grooming practices into the public realm, with these rituals becoming more intermittent throughout the day. Additionally, the practice of posting hair-rolling selfies expands the ritual script of grooming, which is posting selfies on social media. Ultimately, hair-rolling exemplifies the breakdown of public-private boundaries, with personal activities being publicly shared on social media, the merging of public and private spaces, and the intersection of public spaces with private time.

This essay explores the historical process in which homosexuality became an object for pastoral, medical, and mental health care in the Dutch Catholic community during the twentieth century. The confrontation between a moral-religious approach and the professional (medical and psychological) treatment of homosexuality is the central issue. In a continuing dialogue and a process of changing power relations between clergymen, physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, and pedagogues as well as Catholic homosexuals themselves, homosexuality was transformed from sin and pathology into a psychological and social problem that could be treated in pastoral and mental health care. The changing attitudes of Catholics towards homosexuality can be explained in the context of the changing relations between religion on the one hand and health care on the other hand. Current viewpoints resulting from sociohistorical studies on the development of the medical and welfare professions have concluded that religion lost importance in modern society because physicians, psychiatrists, psychotherapists , and social workers not only created new areas of intervention in people's private lives, but also took over the traditional tasks of the church in the field of charity and pastoral care. Medical anamnesis, psychoanalysis, and psychotherapy took the place of confession and pastoral care, thus the argument runs, and remission of sins and redemption were replaced by health and welfare. However, especially in the case of the development of the Dutch welfare state, there was a more complicated interplay between changing religious values and professional strategies. In the Netherlands professional health care and welfare institutions often were organized in a religious context and it is difficult to make a clear differentiation between religious and moral discourses on the one hand and medical and psychological ones on the other hand. Moreover, professional interventions did not take the place of pastoral care; it appears that pastoral care for homosexuals gained ground and was intensified after medical and psychological definitions of homosexuality had found acceptance in the Catholic community. Professional strategies did not supersede religion, but rather contributed to a moral reorientation and a new pattern of Christian values and appreciations in the field of sexuality.

The number of people who identify as LGBTQ+ more than doubled in the past decade, and with this growth has come an upsurge of expressive identity labels. However, that there are more labels available does not explain how people decide which to use. On the basis of 52 interviews, the authors show that LGBTQ+ people adopt multiple terms and adjust their usage relative to the interactional demands at hand. Inspired by research in psychology and population studies on sexual fluidity, the authors call the sociological variant situational fluidity. Two pathways motivate it. First, respondents anchor newer labels with established terms in the interest of smoother interpersonal interactions. We conducted a review of Canadian data published after 2005 on the mental, physical and sexual health outcomes of SMY using relevant keywords. A total of 19 empirical studies and 2 research reports was included. The study reviewed included 53 to 30 588 respondents (total = 81 567). SMY counted for 15.86% of the total sample. Overall, SMY in Canada show negative health outcomes in proportions varying from 7% to 69.4%, the most common issues being psychological distress and maladjustment. SMY are more likely than their heterosexual peers to report psychological distress/malfunctioning, suicidality, substance misuse, condomless intercourse, pregnancy involvement. Minority stress theory explains psychological vulnerability in sexual minorities; however, data is scarce in the Central and Eastern European region. Combining the minority stress model with the Psychological Mediation Framework, we tested a theoretically developed path model. Participants were 1452 (M age = 24.9 years) Czech sexual-minority individuals (38.7% gay, 27.1% lesbian, 18.7% bisexual women). The model explained 55.5% of the variance of psychological distress in the overall sample, representing a total effect of 9.75% (p < .001) increase in measurement units by the modeled associations. Within the subsamples, the associations were similar between harassment and rejection, stigma awareness, and rejection sensitivity, as well as emotional dysregulation, rumination, and psychological distress. However, internalized homonegativity was a stronger factor of psychological well-being in gay men and lesbian women than in bisexual women. Bisexual women may have experienced less social support and more emotional dysregulation due to more concealment and rejection sensitivity, respectively. While we confirmed that the minority stress model applies to the Czech context and explained well psychological distress in sexual minorities, our data highlights notable differences between bisexual women who reported highest rates of distress compared to gay men and lesbian women.

This study explores social media discourses that followed a post celebrating the president of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa’s birthday on Bulawayo based Highlanders FC’s Facebook page. The study further interrogates how comments on Highlanders’ FC page reflect on contemporary hegemonic struggles between football fans and political icons. Findings from the study suggest that Highlanders’ Facebook page facilitated discourses hinged on Ndebele identity and cultural pride contesting against the ethnicity and political identity represented by the political icon. The historical traumas recalling Gukurahundi were also found to be foundational to the counterhegemony which the fans identified as pervasive to their expectations of what constitutes their definition of the ‘beautiful’ game. Ultimately Highlanders FC Facebook page functioned as a counter pubic sphere necessitating political discourses in which ordinary citizens speak back to power

Existing measures of gender identity have some inconsistencies that lead to researchers missing out on the comprehensive image of an individual's gender. The purpose of the present study was to assess how individuals who do not identify with the gender assigned to them at birth conceptualize their gender identity. To understand which aspects are important to an individual's gender identity, semi-structured interviews were conducted with four undergraduate students who identified as non-cisgender (e.g., transgender, non-binary, genderqueer, etc.). Results of the qualitative analysis identified two themes within conceptualizations of gender identity: (1) personal and (2) social. The importance of these two domains as well as the alignment between them is abundantly apparent in the participants' responses and should be the focus of future measures of gender identity.

Elderly transgender loneliness is a distinct and urgent sociological problem that crosses over into other facets of identity, social marginalization, and structural injustice. Within the larger context of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of wellbeing, this research examines the diverse forms of loneliness encountered by older transgender individuals. This study intends to investigate the various characteristics of loneliness in this underrepresented population by conducting a thorough examination of secondary literature, looking into its causes, consequences, and potential solutions. The study emphasizes the interactions between social exclusion, prejudice, access to healthcare, and policy gaps by drawing on previous research. The current study argues that tackling loneliness is critical to advancing the global agenda for sustainable development. This study uses a framework from sociology to give clear analysis and practical recommendations for fostering inclusivity and increasing the quality of life for older transgender individuals, ultimately contributing to the achievement of SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being.

El objetivo del trabajo fue determinar la relación entre nivel de conocimiento y la actitud frente al climaterio en mujeres de 40 a 59 años atendidas en el Centro de Salud Progreso-Chimbote, julio - agosto 2017. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo correlacional, de diseño no experimental, de corte transversal. Se utilizó una ficha de recolección de datos sobre el nivel de conocimiento sobre el climaterio y la actitud hacia el que tenían las mujeres, empleándose las pruebas de Chi cuadrado y el coeficiente de correlación de Spearman, para estudiar la correlación de las variables. Como pôr em prática uma educação LGBTQIA+ em Direitos Humanos? Um percurso do NUGEDS-CNIL É dia 6 de outubro de 2022 enquanto esse texto está sendo escrito. Ontem mesmo recebemos a notícia de que o atual governo federal publicou um decreto que formaliza, no âmbito do MEC, o contingenciamento de R$1,059 bilhão. O orçamento para todas as instituições federais de educação (das quais o IFRJ faz parte) foi reduzido, segundo estimativas, em mais de 96%. Nos últimos anos, a falácia da "ideologia de gênero" operou ativamente para silenciar e até criminalizar as discussões sobre gênero e diversidade sexual nas escolas e na esfera pública de maneira geral, buscando produzir uma sensação infundada de pânico moral ancorada na lesbitransfobia estrutural. Em novo cenário eleitoral, esses argumentos retornam e voltam a ser facilme nte ouvidos com uma força aterradora. Duas parlamentares travestis, Erika Hilton (PSOL-SP) e Duda Salabert (PDT-MG), foram eleitas para ocupar lugares no Congresso Nacional, sob um clima crescente de ameaça. Em torno dos mesmos dias de agosto em que Hilton e Salabert eram novamente ameaçadas com mensagens de conteúdos racistas e transfóbicos em seus gabinetes, a vereadora trans Mari Bortolote (Republicanos) era sequestrada no Espírito Santo. É neste clima político que esse livro está sendo produzido e finalizado, como resultado do projeto de extensão do V Dia da Visibilidade LGBT+ do IFRJ-Nilópolis. Nilópolis é uma cidade da Baixada Fluminense, na região metropolitana do Rio de Janeiro, menor município do estado, herdeira de uma história colonial de genocídio e escravidão contra os povos indígenas Jacuntinga e Tupinambá. Governada, desde 1925, pelos mesmos clãs de famílias que conquistaram, historicamente, influência política e econômica através de práticas ilegais, criando as condições propícias para a ascensão das milícias e para a renovação de projetos nacionais de mortefato que hoje é de interesse geral para uma maior compreensão da política brasileira. Nilópolis tem sua história dissidente: é a cidade de origem da atriz travesti e bicha preta, Vera Verão, e da política e ativista trans Loren Alexander, criadora da Parada LGBTQIA+ de Madureira, que faleceu no início do ano passado. Também é a cidade onde a travesti Eloína dos Leopardos teria se tornado a primeira rainha de bateria nos anos 70, pela Beija-Flor de Nilópolis. Apesar disso, a cidade é extremamente alinhada à "Vocês não vão" foi uma frase repetida por nós, tantas vezes, quando do assassinato de João Antônio Donati, 18 anos, em Goiás no ano de 2014 3 . Era uma resposta nossa para o bilhete de papel deixado dentro da boca do corpo jovem, sem vida e quebrado, com a mensagem "vamos acabar com essa praga". Vocês não vão! O movimento negro norte-americano iniciou também em 2014 a ação "say her name" (em português: diga o nome dela), quando do assassinato da Sandra Bland, 28 anos, em Texas nos Estados Unidos 4 . Ligado com o movimento Black Lives Matter, que enfrenta a sistemática violência racista institucional e estrutural, o say her name se tornou say their names (diga o nome delas, deles, delus), no plural, considerando que o genocídio da população negra não tem fim. O genocídio da população LGBTQIAP+ no Brasil também não dá sinais de ter um fim, ao contrário, segue em fluxo alinhado de morte com o fundamentalismo religioso e o fascismo tropical movido pelo necropoder do neoliberalismo. Diga seus nomes! Presente! Vocês não vão! As palavras ecoadas assim, contando histórias, são maneiras de adiar o nosso fim do mundo, como nos convida a fazer o líder indígena Ailton Krenak (2019, p. 27). Dizemos. Adiamos. Nossas bocas são bazucas. As palavras que se juntam, aqui e agora, em forma de texto e vômito, buscam rabiscar reflexões sobre o campo da educação institucional e as corpas e corpos dissidentes. This study explores the intricate relationship between discrimination, minority stress, and coping mechanisms within the LGBTQ+ community. Discrimination, both structural and interpersonal, significantly contributes to the unique stressors faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, leading to increased experiences of minority stress. This form of stress, characterized by chronic anxiety, social isolation, and internalized stigma, adversely affects mental health outcomes, including depression and anxiety disorders. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, incorporating quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews, to capture the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals regarding discrimination and its psychological impacts. Findings indicate that those who experience higher levels of discrimination report elevated levels of minority stress, which in turn correlates with poorer mental health outcomes. Additionally, the study highlights the diversity within the LGBTQ+ community, revealing that intersectional factors-such as race, gender identity, and socioeconomic statusfurther complicate the experiences of discrimination and minority stress. Coping mechanisms employed by participants range from social support networks to adaptive strategies such as mindfulness and community engagement. These coping strategies are critical for mitigating the negative effects of minority stress and enhancing overall well-being. The study underscores the importance of promoting inclusive environments that foster acceptance and support for LGBTQ+ individuals. It also emphasizes the need for targeted mental health interventions that address the specific stressors faced by diverse groups within the LGBTQ+ community. Ultimately, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between discrimination, minority stress, and coping mechanisms, offering insights for mental health practitioners, policymakers, and advocates working to improve the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals.

Gender is known to be tied to affect, but research has largely focused on the negative feelings tied to conflicts between assigned sex and current gender/sex or restrictive norms. Little research has analyzed positive emotions or pleasure related to gender/sex, and even less research has investigated pleasure through a diversityfocused lens-attention to majority and minority axes of power within analysis-as experienced by cisgender heterosexual individuals who exist in normative locations. The current article aimed to understand how and if gender/sex/ual majority groups (i.e., binary, cisgender, and heterosexual people) experience pleasure because of and/or related to their gender/sex identity and expression. To test this, we asked participants (N = 59) to share positive experiences related to their gender/sex via qualitative questions in virtual focus groups. We identified four themes from analyses: (a) gender pleasure derives from within one's self; (b) gender pleasure derives from interpersonal interactions; (c) gender pleasure derives from comparison to "the other" binary gender/sex; (d) additional social locations can impact gender pleasure. Each of these themes consisted of behaviors that could be seen as either normative or counter-normative within a Western perspective (i.e., whether or not they are stereotypical of their gender/sex). These findings situate gender/sex/ual majority groups as majorities rather than "the norm," and thus can inform understandings of gender/sex majority peoples' experiences of gender pleasure, as well as gender/sex norms and experiences of pleasure more generally. This article is one of a two-part report, and the first part explores gender pleasure among gender/sex/ual minority groups. Public Significance Statement This research demonstrates that gender/sex/ual majority people diverse by race/ethnicity can experience pleasure from their gender/sexes in various ways, including from within themselves and their social lives. This suggests that positive experiences are crucial to understanding how gender/sex functions in society, including how gender/sex norms can be perpetuated and/or challenged.

Sex between people of the same gender occurs in all societies. In Africa such behavior is most often not associated with a homosexual identity, but men having sex with men usually have sex with women as well, get married, and have children. In most countries of Africa sex between people of the same gender is still prohibited under sodomy laws which were introduced by the colonial powers. Great stigma and discrimination occurs against those people who are either unable or unwilling to hide the fact that they have sex with partners of the same sex. The adverse consequences documented in this paper include eviction from families and neighborhood, loss of jobs and housing, discrimination in the health services, and a high level of violence, including from the police. As a consequence many sexual minority members are among the poorest and most marginalized members of society, and have no social safety net. They are at a high risk of engaging in transactional sex. Since anal sex is one of the most efficeint ways of transmitting HIV, men having sex with men are heavily affected by the epidemic. There are virtually no programs in Africa focusing on prevention among men having sex with men, and most of them have unprotected sex with both their male and female partners. There is therefore an important bridge between the epidemic among men having sex with men and their women and children. It is urgent that the twin epidemics of HIV/AIDS and violence be tackled as part of HIV/AIDS and poverty reduction programs. Approaches to combat HIV/AIDS among men having sex with men are well developed, and include epidemiological approaches focusing on the sexual behaviors, cultural-anthropological approaches focusing on the meaning of these relationships, and empowerment approaches fostering on capacity building of the sexual minorities themselves, so that they can take the lead in combating HIV/AIDS among themselves, cobat violence, and fight for their human rights. The reason for inaction on these issues are not lack of tolerance, but lack of political will. The Africa Region Working Paper Series expedites dissemination of applied research and policy studies with potential for improving economic performance and social conditions in Sub-Saharan Africa. The series publishes papers at preliminary stages to stimulate timely discussions within the Region and among client countries, donors, and the policy research community. The editorial board for the series consists of representatives from professional families appointed by the Region's Sector Directors.

In recent years, it has been reported that more and more people are identifying as pansexual and/or panromantic. Pansexuality has also become an increasingly popular topic in popular media. However, at present, there are no UK-specific psychological studies on pansexual or panromantic identities, and very little research actually talking to pansexual and panromantic people anywhere in the world. Therefore, we were interested to find out more about pansexual and panromantic people’s understandings and lived experiences of their identities.The project was supported and funded by the British Psychological Society (BPS) Undergraduate Research Assistantship Scheme and gained ethical approval from the University of the West of England’s Faculty Research Ethics Committee (FREC) (HAS.18.04.152).The researchers are Dr Nikki Hayfield, a Senior Lecturer in Social Psychology, and Karolina Krizova, who has recently completed her undergraduate psychology degree at UWE

It examines how varying cultural backgrounds influence attitudes toward LGBTQ rights, highlighting the internal conflicts faced by immigrant communities with conservative views. The legal landscape, established by the legalization of same-sex marriage in 2013, is scrutinized for its inconsistent reception among diverse populations. Critique is directed toward the lack of accessible education and resources, which perpetuates misinformation and limits the capacity for individuals to navigate their rights effectively. The discussion underscores the need for comprehensive advocacy that prioritizes education, cultural sensitivity, and support for marginalized groups. Ultimately, the article posits that the current state of gay rights in France presents an opportunity for growth and improvement, advocating for a more inclusive approach that fosters understanding and acceptance across all cultural backgrounds.

The Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) among high school students includes standard questions about sexual identity and sex of sexual contacts, but these questions are not consistently included in every state that conducts the survey. This study aimed to develop and apply a method to predict state-level proportions of high school students identifying as lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB) or reporting any same-sex sexual contacts in those states that did not include these questions in their 2017 YRBS.

The specificity of the Daily Heterosexist Experiences Questionnaire (DHEQ) makes it an appropriate measurement tool for the sexual and gender minority population as it was originally administered in US cross-cultural population. The language of the questionnaire is English which makes it difficult to be administered on large scale population in India as the gender non-conforming population especially the Hijra and kothi community as they drop-out off schools and colleges due to their engagement in begging and sex work alongside their association with exclusive ‘deras’ (Singh & Dandona, 2021). The final adapted version of the questionnaire included Thirty-Eight (38) items bifurcated into 7 Sub-scales or dimensions. Further, few of the items were modified so that it aligns with the language and cultural specificities of India.

Young sexual minority adults experience high rates of heterosexist discrimination. The use of substances has been documented as a form of coping with discrimination. While mindfulness has been used to address experiences of discrimination and the use of substances, respectively, few studies have explored whether mindfulness can lower the negative effects of discrimination on substance use. The purpose of this study is to examine the association between heterosexist discrimination and substance use in young adult sexual minority men (YASMM), and if dispositional mindfulness can moderate this relationship. Methods: Logistic regression analysis was used to examine the association of heterosexist discrimination and cigarette, e-cigarette, and hazardous drinking in a sample of YASMM (18-35 years old; n = 325) from a national survey. A two-way interaction analysis was also implemented to evaluate if dispositional mindfulness moderated this relationship. Results: Heterosexist discrimination was associated with increased odds of cigarette use (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.06; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.03, 1.08) and e-cigarette use (aOR = 1.03; 95% CI: 1.01, 1.05). Higher scores of dispositional mindfulness moderated the relationship between heterosexist discrimination and hazardous drinking, indicating a weakening effect with higher scores of dispositional mindfulness. Conclusion: Mindfulness may decrease the negative effects of heterosexist discrimination on hazardous drinking among YASMM. Health Equity Implications: Researchers and practitioners should consider incorporating mindfulness as a component to their intervention to help YASMM deal with stressors engendered by discrimination, which may prevent hazardous drinking as a coping mechanism at a younger age.

Sexual minority youth are at higher risk of substance use than heterosexual youth. However, most evidence in this area is from North America, and it is unclear whether the findings can be generalized to other cultures and countries. In this investigation, we used data from the 2014 Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study to compare substance use in same- and both-gender attracted 15-year-old adolescents from eight European countries (n = 14,545) to that of their peers who reported opposite-gender attraction or have not been romantically attracted to anyone. Both-gender attracted, and to a lesser extent, same-gender attracted adolescents were significantly more likely to smoke cigarettes, consume alcohol, get drunk and use cannabis, or be involved in multiple substance use in the last 30 days compared to their opposite-gender attracted peers. The Thai sex industry sector catering to sex between men has recently shifted to a predominately migrant workforce, particularly in northern part of the country. The majority of sex worker men in Chiang Mai, a metropolitan center in northern Thailand, are Shan migrants from Myanmar. This research explores the lives of Shan men engaged in sex work in Chiang Mai, examining how engaging with queer sexual commodification shapes their gender and sexual identities. As Shan sex worker men in this research identify as heterosexual men, selling sex to men might impact their sense of (hetero) masculinity. Based on 20 in-depth interviews with Shan migrant sex worker men living and working in Chiang Mai city, this research explores, on the one hand, how Shan sex worker men negotiate, redefine, and reconstruct their masculinities, and on the other, how the identities of being a masculine man, sex worker, and non-citizen migrant intersect and shape their experiences and identities.
